Ideas to benefit youngpeople are in<br />

abundancearoundthe Hurunui district.<br />

Under thewatch of anew youth<br />

workeratthe Hurunui District Council,<br />

these ideas are becomingareality.<br />

Rebecca Pugh says working with<br />

youngpeopleis atwo­waystreet.<br />

‘‘The youth areareallyimportant part<br />

of ourcommunity.This role is about<br />

providingour youngpeople with<br />

opportunities for development and<br />

personalgrowth, ensuring their voice is<br />

heard,and that we are recognisingthe<br />

incrediblestrengthsand abilitiesour<br />

youthhaveinour district, andbuilding<br />

on this.’’<br />

Theformerprimaryschool teacher<br />

will soon to be circulating an online<br />

youthsurvey,askingthem to sharetheir<br />

ideas about how theysee theirown<br />

district now, and theirvisionfor the<br />

future.<br />

Shearman,Rebecca willberegularly<br />

visiting thethreeareaschools for the<br />

restofthe year.<br />

‘‘I am excited to get into the schools<br />

andconnect with our young people. My<br />

visits in the schools helps metobuild<br />

relationships with our youthto<br />

understandtheirneeds and howIcan<br />

best support them.<br />

‘‘I am always amazed at their ideas<br />

andthey directly inspirethe eventsand<br />

programmes that we hold, basedonwhat<br />

they identify as beingthe need.<br />

‘‘This canbeanentertainment event, a<br />

connector event,or amore educational<br />

eventbasedaroundan issue that<br />

impactsyoung people.’’<br />

As exam timekicksin, Rebeccawillbe<br />

looking at waystocheck in with the<br />

students duringthis busy, andoften<br />

stressful time,tosee howeveryoneis<br />

Recruitment will begin soon for next<br />

year’sHurunui Youth Programme and<br />

Hurunui YouthCouncilmembers.<br />

Rebeccasays both are aboutcreating<br />

greatopportunities, leadershipand<br />

gainingnew experiences.<br />

“Wewillbeholding three events in<br />

Novemberwhere our youngpeople can<br />

comealong, have lotsoffun, talk to our<br />

current youth crew anddiscover what<br />

the Hurunui YouthProgrammeand<br />

Hurunui YouthCouncilisall about.’’<br />

Detailsfor theseeventswill be<br />

released shortly on theHurunui Youth<br />

Facebook and Instagrampages.<br />

Interest and excitement is also<br />

buildingfor the Neon Nuion<strong>October</strong> 24<br />

at Omihi Hall.<br />

Rebeccawas born and raisedonthe<br />

KapitiCoast. Shemovedtothe Hurunui<br />

District four years ago, taking up a<br />

teaching positionatWaiau School.<br />

She is also amember of the<br />

CommunityResponse Committee, which<br />

has hadabusy butrewarding year<br />

supportingthe Amuricommunity during<br />

the hardships brought on by Covid­19.<br />

She andher husband have a20monthold<br />

daughter, Grace.<br />

community,and we lovehow scenic our<br />

surroundings are.”<br />
