Awards given to community stalwarts<br />
Volunteers have been<br />
recognisedand celebrated at<br />
the <strong>Ashburton</strong>District<br />
Council's Community Honours<br />
Awards ceremony.<br />
Seven individuals and one<br />
group received awards at last<br />
week’sformal ceremony held at<br />
the <strong>Ashburton</strong>Trust Event<br />
centre.<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong>deputy mayor Liz<br />
McMillan read out citations for<br />
the three civic award recipients<br />
and mayorNeilBrown for the<br />
five mayor’s award recipients.<br />
Receiving civic awards were<br />
Yvonne Lister, Judy Skevington<br />
and community groupLitter<br />
Free <strong>Ashburton</strong>.<br />
YvonneLister was<br />
nominated by Mavis Wilkins<br />
and Judy Vaughan andhas held<br />
various roles in the Women’s<br />
Institute overthe last 50 years.<br />
She is also avolunteer for the<br />
Cancer Society, member of<br />
Friendsof<strong>Ashburton</strong>Hospital,<br />
community Christmas lunch<br />
volunteerand hasbeenakeen<br />
indoor bowler for 40 yearsand<br />
held various roles in the clubs<br />
she has been involved with.<br />
Judy Skevingtonwas<br />
nominated by Dellwyn Moylan<br />
and DonGeddes and has given<br />
her timeand skills to anumber<br />
of community causes.<br />
She wasinvolved withthe<br />
RuralSupportTrust for three<br />
and ahalf years, was a<br />
neighbourhood support<br />

Maxine Hooper has a46year association with Riding For The<br />
Disabled.<br />
volunteer and has been with<br />
Civil Defence for over 10 years.<br />
After the Christchurch<br />
earthquakes she helped at<br />
welfare centre in thecity and<br />
also assisted after the Kaikoura<br />
earthquakes.<br />
Sheis, or has been, involved<br />
with anumberof community<br />
projects including TimeBank,<br />
Victim Support, NZ Red Cross<br />
and AnglicanAdvocacy.<br />
Receiving the award for<br />
Litter Free <strong>Ashburton</strong> at the<br />
ceremony was group founder<br />
BevSkates.<br />
The group was established<br />
two years ago andvolunteers<br />
complete regular cleanups<br />
around<strong>Ashburton</strong>.<br />
Volunteers have also<br />
repaired and repainted picnic<br />
tables, paintedover graffiti and<br />
cleaned up the overheadbridge<br />
between East and West streets.<br />
The group has collected a<br />
staggering 2.8 tonnes since its<br />
inception.<br />
The mayor’s award recipients<br />
were JohnFleming, Maxine<br />
Hooper, RobinKilworth,David<br />
McKimmie and Darryl Nelson.<br />
John Fleming is athird<br />
generationfarmer from<br />
Lismore and was nominated by<br />
Cushla Murdochand Jill<br />
Ludemann.<br />
He was achartermember of<br />
the Mayfield District Lions<br />
Club42years ago and has been<br />
its presidentand secretary.<br />
He has alsobeen involved<br />
withthe MayfieldDomain<br />
Board andMayfield Hall<br />
committee fornearly20years.<br />
Mr Flemingisanhonorary<br />
member of the Mayfield A&P<br />
Association, served as aJPfor<br />
36 years and has been actively<br />
involvedinrifling shooting and<br />
astrong supporter of various<br />
local shooting associationsover<br />
many years.<br />
MaxineHooperwas<br />
nominated by Dellwyn Moylan<br />
and Elizabeth Quaidand has a<br />
46 year involvement with<br />
Riding For The Disabled.<br />
She is thecurrent head coach<br />
in <strong>Ashburton</strong> andhas25years<br />
of service on the national<br />
training team.<br />
Mrs Hooper also works with<br />
the<strong>Ashburton</strong> Senior Citizens<br />
groupand has along<br />
association with Community<br />
House MidCanterburyand its<br />
forerunner, <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />
Resource Centre.<br />
Former <strong>Ashburton</strong> councillor<br />
Robin Kilworthwas nominated<br />
by Sue Prowse and Linda<br />
Petrie.<br />
She served six consecutive<br />
terms on council from 1995 and<br />
held anumberofnumber of<br />
roles and worked with many<br />
organisations.<br />
She has beeninvolved with<br />
Catholic education groups over<br />
theyears andreceivedthe<br />
Papal Award for her work in the<br />
Diocese of Christchurch.<br />
Mrs Kilworth was an<br />
inaugural trusteeofthe Trotts<br />
Garden Trust and has been a<br />
member of ZontaClub of<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> for manyyears.<br />
Doriefarmer David<br />
McKimmie wasnominated by<br />
Nicki Webster and Mieke<br />
LepoutreKroef andisawell<br />
known identity in his<br />
community.<br />
He hasserved on Dorie’s<br />
reserve board, hallcommittee<br />
and charitable trust and has<br />
been involved with the<br />
Pendarves Young Farmers and<br />
Te Pirita Gun Club, where he<br />
was president.<br />

longtimesupporterofraising<br />
awareness forthe mental<br />

Former nurseryman Darryl<br />
Nelson was nominated by<br />
Robin Kilworth and John<br />
Leadley.<br />
He spent 18 years as an<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> councillor, worked<br />
with Civil defence and was on<br />
the Tinwald Domain Board for<br />
17 years.<br />
He is alife member and<br />
formerpresident of the<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> Railway and<br />
PreservationSociety and has<br />
been astrong supporter of the<br />
Rakaiadistrict, including<br />
volunteering on the township’s<br />
fire brigade, school board and<br />
scout group.<br />
Mr Nelson has also spent<br />
many hours offering his<br />
practical skills andknowledge<br />
on mowing,snowclearingand<br />
general beautification duties in<br />
his community.<br />
