Maureen Maginness’ heartand
she is hosting acuppa for acause
thismonth to raise funds for
families dealing with the
condition.
Maureen cared for her
husband Langtry, who suffered
from vascular dementia,for
years and it is nearlytwo years
since his death.
She is baking up astorm, to
serve Devonshire teas for a
donation,ather homeand
garden on November21.
She willalso have some of the
quiltsshe has createdoverthe
past 10 years on display.
Maureen said she was nota
natural gardener, butshe tended
thegarden created by Langtry
andenjoyedthe memories.
Sheis hoping people whoare
dealing with dementia or who
have dealt with dementiaintheir
familieswill call by between
10am and 3pm for achat.
Sheis making the sconesand
raspberry jam from scratch and
while thefood is an attraction
anddefinitely worth paying for,
it is the human connectionsthat
aremost important.
Maureen’s home is at thetop
endofHarrisonStreet.Signposts

Asecond culturally themed
garden is being planted in
AshburtonDomainaspart of a
Welcoming Communities
initiative.
The FilipinoHut Garden will
be formally unveiled and
celebrated at an evening of food,
entertainment andstorytelling
on November 7from 6pm.
Representatives from Mid
Canterbury's Filipino
community have partnered with
the AshburtonDistrict
Welcoming Communities
programme to install the garden.
The local Filipino community
has been workingonthe garden
designfor more than ayearand
the visionbehinditis to express
culture and identity while also
signifying puttingdownnew
roots for abrightfuture in Mid
Canterbury.
The garden features miniature
bahaykubo, or nipa huts, as well
as symbolsand colours from the
Philippines flag.
Anumber of sub­tropical
species andflowers have been
sourced for it.
Thetemporary garden will be
on show untilEaster 2021.
An Indian garden was the first
culturalgarden set up in the
domain in November2018.

says thethemed gardens are
intended to reflect the district's
growing culturaland ethnic
diversity and placeswhere
newcomers and locals can feel
welcome, make connections and
learnmore aboutone other.
