Wakanui Beach legacy project<br />

Wakanui Beach needs a<br />

windmill to generate power to<br />

pumpwater into its lagoon,<br />

makingthe whole area more<br />

attractive to birdsand people,<br />

saysagroup enhancing the<br />

beach.<br />

Water in thelagoon,or<br />

hapua,was key to life for flora<br />

and fauna there, said<br />

spokespersonVal Clemens.<br />

The lagoon,where Wakanui<br />

Stream historically exits into<br />

the sea, is mostly dry. But<br />

birdlife, including the<br />

endangered banded dotterel,<br />

are more likely to nest there if<br />

there is water.<br />

Committeerecently.<br />

Wakanui Beach was<br />

importanttoMaori in the early<br />

days and waspart of anetwork<br />

of settlements alongthe<br />

coastline. Areserve was<br />

created there in 1907 and a<br />

brick shelter built; the<br />

building is nowaprivate bach.<br />

Mrs Clemens said thebeach<br />

was popular to this day andon<br />

her last visit she counted 20<br />

carsand three campervans<br />

there.<br />

potential but you need to be a<br />

dreamer to see that.’’<br />

Her vision,already under<br />

way with the help of the<br />

Wakanui Crew, Wakanui<br />

School students, farmers in the<br />

area and others, is to enhance<br />

the space with native plantings<br />

and try to stop people dumping<br />

their rubbish there.<br />

It was alsocommon to see<br />

areas where rubbish had been<br />

burned,she said.<br />

Equally concerning were the<br />

number of vehicles being<br />

driven through newly­planted<br />

wetlandsareas.<br />

‘‘One of thesignificant<br />

things yousee is vehicle tracks<br />

andbird footprints colliding.’’<br />

Community involvement and<br />

education was the answer,Mrs<br />

Clemenssaid.<br />

As wellasrare plants, the<br />

beachreserveishometo<br />

native birds, some<br />

endangered. The banded<br />

dotterel, with adeclining<br />

population of 50,000,nests<br />

were hard to distinguishand<br />

eggs at themercy of predators<br />

as wellasunseeinghumans.<br />

Thebeach area wasassessed<br />

in 2017 andreplanting events<br />

happened in 2018,2019and<br />

this year.<br />

Mrs Clemenstoldthe zone<br />

committee the beach could be<br />

alegacy project that aligned<br />

with its aims; the committee<br />

could help findawaytoensure<br />

waterremained in the lagoon<br />

to support bird and plant life.<br />

She asked if they could<br />

investigate thepossibility of a<br />

windmill to pumpwater there.<br />

Theiractionscouldensure<br />

children 100 yearsfrom now<br />

might still be able to see a<br />

kingfisher,abandeddotterel<br />

or acopper butterfly,she said.<br />

Wakanui Streamhas been<br />

highly modified over the years<br />

and all but disappeared.<br />

Restoringsome flow is seen as<br />

amuch bigger story than what<br />

is happeningatthe mouth.<br />

Canterburyto provideareport<br />

on the hydrology of the area.<br />

Green light for domain spruce up<br />

The newaccess roadintothe<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong>Domainwill be<br />

designed to have as little<br />

impact on existing trees and<br />

grass as possible.<br />

Thenew entry off Walnut<br />

Avenue is the firstpriority for<br />

the <strong>Ashburton</strong> District Council<br />

after councillors approved a<br />

30­year domain development<br />

plan.<br />

Thenew accessneedstobe<br />

doneatthe same timeasNZTA<br />

installs traffic lights at the<br />

corner of Walnut Avenue and<br />

WestStreet, as the existing<br />

domain entrance from West<br />

Street willbelimited.<br />

Council has $409,000to<br />

spend this financialyear on<br />

the new access. Othertop<br />

priority projectsinthe next<br />

three years are the Walnut<br />

Avenue promenade, asealed<br />

path along the edge of the<br />

domain,and new edging for<br />

someofthe domain’s ponds.<br />

Money for the other two<br />

priorities will be allocated<br />

when council does its longtermplan<br />

next year.<br />

Councillorsmay also decideto<br />

elevate other projects,like<br />

playground improvements.<br />

The development plan,<br />

which has been awork in<br />

progress since late2018,will<br />

establish anew centralhub<br />

andaims to celebrate the<br />

waterways,create acohesive<br />

playenvironment and<br />

strengthen connections<br />

between the domain and<br />

township.<br />

Twenty­five improvement<br />

projects have beenidentified.<br />

The draft planattracted164<br />

submissionsfrom members of<br />

the public,many sought to<br />

havethe <strong>Ashburton</strong> Bowling<br />

Clubremain and councillors<br />

changedthe draft to make that<br />

happen.<br />

The hub will be asmall<br />

pavilion with an overhead<br />

canopy nearthe car park that<br />

will be accessed by the new<br />

roadoff WalnutAvenue.<br />

Theroad willbeonthe<br />

eastern sideofthe existing<br />

walkwayand trees.<br />

Communityservices<br />

manager Steve Fabishsaid the<br />

proposedroadwouldbe<br />

designed to minimise impact<br />

on the trees and grass area.<br />

‘‘Wehave already worked<br />

with the domain usergroupto<br />

highlight that and have<br />

promised to go backtothe<br />

grouptolook at the impact on<br />

sports. But thedriveristo<br />

minimise lossofgreenspace<br />

and damage to thetrees.’’<br />

Otherkey changesfollowing<br />

consultation were to remove<br />

the existing aviary and expand<br />

the wildlife garden;the band<br />

rotundaonthe southern<br />

corner has been scaled back to<br />

awatersideshelter andanew<br />

flyingfox has been included.<br />

Theplan remainsaliving<br />

documentand will be<br />

reviewed everyfiveyears.<br />

NUISANCETREES<br />

The <strong>Ashburton</strong>District Councilhas<br />

approved the removalofsix oak<br />

treesonroad reserve at the<br />

entrance to Millibrook Place.They<br />

will be replaced with flowering<br />

dogwoods.<br />

The treeshave been creatinga<br />

nuisancefor neighbourswith roots<br />

affectingproperties, kerb and<br />

channel, and footpath.Someinthe<br />

subdivisionwantedthem to remain,<br />

but the mostaffected want them<br />

gone.<br />

Councilispreparingacode of<br />

practise for subdivisions to ensure<br />

appropriate trees are plantedinthe<br />

futureinother developments.<br />

CRANK UP<br />

The GeraldineVintage Carand<br />

Machinery Club is holdingits annual<br />

CrankupDay this Saturday,<br />

<strong>November</strong> 7. Theclub’s museum<br />

displaysover 125 tractors, cars and<br />

assorted farm-related machinery,<br />

saved or salvaged fromthe local<br />

district. On Crank Up day, members<br />

set some of the vehicles in motion in<br />

aday filled with revving engines,the<br />

chugofold motors,and the smell of<br />

oil and petrol. The museum will be<br />

openfrom 9.30am to 4pm;gold coin<br />

donationfor grownups,children<br />

Court on <strong>November</strong> 16.<br />

foundnear BridgeStreetand taken<br />

to <strong>Ashburton</strong>Hospital. Police<br />
