During Term Three, several students entered both the Great
Kiwi Mathematics Competition and the Australian Mathematics
Competition. These are online problem-solving competitions where
the students have one hourtocompletethe questions.
Assistant Head of Mathematics FacultyLiz Cabout said that this year we
had someoutstandingresults:
In particular, Year 9student Luke Hay gained distinction and the top
studentresult in the KiwiMathematics Competition, placing him in the
top 0.5% percentile level of the Year 9students entered. Luke’s highest
mark wasachieved againststudents from the300 schools’entries. Luke also
gained High Distinction in the AustralianMathematics Competition, which
placedhim in the top3%of his year group.
In the Kiwi competition other students to do very well were
Hector Diamante and Ella Rickard who both scored in the top 25% of
Year 9students.
In the Australian Mathematics Competition JacobSwan, StevenHarris
and Ella Rickard all gained Distinction, scoring in the top 20% of their
respectiveyear groups.
As only very capable mathematics students enter these competitions, this
College ChessboardThrobbed to the
Sound of Mustangs
To the enthusiast, the sound of Mustangs gliding on to the College
Chessboard atlunchtime on Friday 30October was adrawcard (and a
slight distraction tothose in ameeting in the Principal’s Office beside the
Chessboard!). Afew minutes’pauseinproceedings wasrequired!
Organised through local
member Patrick Forde,
approximately fourteen
members ofthe Canterbury
Mustang Owners’ Club
visited the College, to talk
with and show offtheir very
fine machines, tointerested
staff and students, and to
give a few revs to let the
sound of the motors be
savoured.
Students had the opportunity toview the cars inside and out, and peer
under the bonnets as well. Naturally passionate about their cars, the
Mustang Club personnel were correctly of the view that our students and
staff wouldenjoyseeing,and
hearing, the cars. It didn’t
take too much urging from
students for the owners to
get theengines revving!
(Pictured left, lefttoright):
Checking out the quality
were Olivia Hill,
Elizabeth Hastie,
Jessica Wilson and
Lucy Ross.
Owners are rightly proud of their immaculate vehicles, enjoying gathering
forrallies and displaying their vehicles foranyone interested. The steady flow
of interested students throughout the lunch break certainly confirmed this.
