Conor Murray kicks a
conversion to end the game
Six Munster players were involved in Ireland’s
32-9 win over Wales in the first game of the new
Autumn Nations Cup on Friday night in Dublin.
Peter O’Mahony and Chris Farrell were named
on the starting XV with Andrew Conway joining
them after a late injury to Jacob Stockdale
forced a reshuffle. Tadhg Beirne came onto the
bench to replace the withdrawn Iain Henderson,
with Conor Murray and Keith Earls also named
in the replacements.
Ireland led 16-6 at half-time after two penalties
kicked by Johnny Sexton and a try from Quinn
Roux with Sexton adding the extras.
Peter O’Mahony took over the captaincy at the
half hour mark, on what was his 70th appearance
for Ireland, after Sexton had to leave the field
and the fly-half, debutant Billy Burns kicked his
first points for Ireland shortly before the break.
Burns and Leigh Halfpenny both kicked a
penalty each in the third quarter to maintain a
ten point lead for the home side.
Tadhg Beirne joined the fray after 64 minutes
with Conor Murray coming off the bench at the
same time to step into the fly half position. He
immediately kicked a penalty goal and added
another three points 7 minutes later to push
Ireland 25-9 ahead.
Keith Earls replaced Robbie Henshaw after 70
minutes to play his part in a high tempo final
ten minutes
Ireland had the last word with a try from James
Lowe at the death, converted by Murray who
nailed his third kick of the evening to leave the
scoreline 32-9 at the final whistle.
Ireland play England in Twickenham next
Saturday, 21 November, and Georgia on
Sunday, 29 November.
