Council looks beyond
zone committee
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Acommittee focused on the Hurunui
District being agreat place to live,
where people have acommon goal of
looking after their land and water, is
destined to take over the work of the
Hurunui Waiau Zone Committee.
It is intended that the Hurunui Water
and Land committee will be made up of
people with connections to
organisations, but who have talents to
develop strategies rather than working
for any one group.
They will advocate to remove barriers,
policies and rules that are not working,
and enable the ‘‘doers’’ to get on and
make the Hurunui District agreat place.
Cr Lynda Murchison said at last week’s
council meeting that there would be a
continued relationship with
Environment Canterbury, Ngai
Tuahuriri, and ahost of other
organisations.
Those involved in the committee
would be influencers and strategists.
She said there needed to be free and
frank discussion between parties so the
committee did not unravel.
Its purpose and function would need
to be clearly defined, she said.
Wellness, and other Local Government
Act requirements, would be among the
aims of the committee, ‘‘not resource
management stuff’’, she said.
‘‘We need to find away to pull people
together and come up with asystem that
works for the Hurunui, and we will then
have the opportunity to do great things,’’
she said.
‘‘It will be the role of the committee to
facilitate, make connections, and help
the doers.’’
This was an opportunity to untangle
the past and consider the future,
recognising the effort, time, work and
energy of the previous zone committee.
The council agreed in principle to a
proposed terms of reference, which will
form the basis for discussions with
ECan, and Ngai Tuahuriri.
Aworking party of Mayor Marie Black,
and Crs Murchison, Fiona Harris and
Vince Daly was appointed.
Meantime, the zone committee will
continue to operate as usual.
