Tuahiwi School overcame Covid19 uncertainty and venuerestrictionsto pull off another big twoday celebration of Maori culture at the Ohoka Community Hall on Monday and Tuesday. PrincipalMelanie TaitePitama said around36school groups, including five schools from Christchurch taking part for the firsttime, performed in front of more than 1500 whanau and friends. It is believed to be the largest schools event in North Canterbury, which means the organisersare looking forward to Stadium Waimakaririopeningnext year. ‘‘There’sabit of awaiting list for us now,’’MsTaitePitamasays. Last Monday night’s show was sold out after the first coupleofweeks,leaving some people disappointed at being unabletoattend. ‘‘We’ll be really happy in North Canterbury when the stadium is up and running. ‘‘We had to have it abit later thisyear, because Covid19 has caused some disruption to our school programmes,’’ she said. But localschools got behind the event, with several pupils taking time out from school campthis week to perform. With Maori being the youngest and fastest growingdemographic in New Zealand,MsTaitePitama said the celebrationplayed an important role in allowing Maori studentstoexpress themselves,and in raising awareness amongthe wider population. ‘‘That can only be apositive for all of us. We want to teachpeopleabout who we are as Maori, the richness that we can bringtopeople’s lives.’’ The Tuahiwi School whanauwas busy feeding more than 1500visitorsover the two days to raise funds for the school, parent SarahJane Pakisays. It was made possible thanks to Hellers providingthe sausages, PAK’nSAVE supplying bottled water and lollies, and Kaiapoi New World donating bread,buns and sauce,aswell as sponsoringthe event.
