Challenging conditions ... Summer pastures present challengesfor dairy cows.
Astrategy to ‘stop
the drop’ in summer
It is wellknownthat summer pasturegrowing conditions present achallengefor those
wanting to stop theircows losing bodycondition score (BCS). Challenging summers can
also result in aloss of pregnancies or triggeranexcessive drop in the lactation curve.
Recently, aclient who was doing 1.91kg of milk solids per cow per day said to me: ‘‘Last
year we let cows drop production and fed them only grasstosave on feed costs.’’
The customermentioned that the cows dropped milk productionto1.60kgMS/cow/day.
Using apayout of $6 per kilogram of milk solids and assuming we need to feed 150 grams
of OPTISYNC (AlltechInc) at $0.60 cents/cow/day investment for the 150g, let’s look at
the numbers:
It’s anobrainerthat aprofitof$1.26/cow/daycan be madewhilst alsomaintaining milk
production and other health benefits, such as maintaining pregnancy and BCS.
Why let cows dropmilk production, lose BCS or be culledfor beingempty when there
is so much potential for profit by feeding OPTISYNC?
Summernutrition facts
Acow’s daily intake is reduced in summerpartly because of the increasing neutral
detergent fibre(NDF)content in the pasture. Higher pasture NDF (reproductive pasture
quality) fills up the rumen faster and the cowwill not get
the required daily nutrient intake neededfor milk
production.
Also, protein levelsinsummer pasturedrop below the
protein requirementsofcows for maintenance and milk
production. Rumen degradable protein(RDP)
supplementation is thereforehighlyrecommendedto
compensatefor thelack of protein in pasturesand in the
overall diet.
OPTISYNC is the most effective solution to fill thisgap
when compared with otherRDP protein supplements.
Why? BecauseOPTISYNC is aspecifically produced slow
release RDP source which is consistent batch to batch.
OPTISYNC has an NDF valueof0,which means it takes
up lessspaceand does not replaceother feeds in the
rumen.
