The SummerShow Community of Creatives is acelebration of the exhibition’s mantra, ‘‘we all helpone another’’ —aconceptportrayed in DavidDawon Choi’s Inhabitants of the Nest. The young awardwinning Koreanborn artist,who now lives in Christchurch, was borndeaf and severelysightimpaired.Hebegan drawing at the age of three to convey his thoughts and feelings. Aftermoving to New Zealand with his familywhen aged nine, David became inspiredbyMaori culture and the naturalworld around him to create the intricate and detailed worksfor which he has become wellknown. The deafblind artist uses aunique technique for drawinghis work, utilising aclosedcircuit television monitor to see what he is doing. David’s artworkwas described as ‘‘very special’’ by Waimakariri District Mayor Dan Gordon, who was aguest speaker at the official exhibition opening in Oxfordlast Saturday. Mr Gordon praised the gallery and the volunteers who run it. ‘‘This gallery is absolutely outstanding,’’ he said.‘‘It is an important part of thiscommunity because it is community driven and has greatleaderswith vision.’’ The gallery’s board of trustees chairwoman, Areta Wilkinson, also thanked the volunteers for their hard work during adifficult year hamperedbyCovid19 restrictions. Mayor pushes for local arts strategy By DAVID HILL The growth of the artsin <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong> means the timeisright to develop an artsstrategy, Waimakariri MayorDan Gordon says. The KaiapoiArt Expo has become established as theforemostart event in the district, while the ArtsinOxford Gallery and Rangiora’s Chamber Gallery bothplaytheir partinsupporting a burgeoning arts community,among other initiativesand organisations.
