28 | 01907She hasleft a bigmark ona smalltownBY DANIEL KANEFor many, the thought of Nahantbrings to mind hot days on the beach.But for Calantha Sears, the town meansmuch more, everything in fact.Sears has spent nearly a century inNahant, calling it her home and leavingher imprint on the state's smallestmunicipality.Granddaughter of Albert Wilson,who built many of the summer retreatsand smaller houses in town, Sears wasborn in the Hyland Road home of herparents on Oct. 17, 1921.She later married her husband, aU.S. Navy veteran whom she met atFisherman’s Beach and together theyraised four daughters, Melinda HatfieldKershaw, Lucy Jane Pomeroy, ElizabethComeau, and Cynthia Oxton.Sears has held many titles during hertime in Nahant, and each one involvedgiving back to the community she hascalled home her entire life.She worked as a children's librarianat the Nahant Public Library for 17years, during which she found a lovefor working with Nahant's smallestresidents. Sears became president ofthe Nahant Historical Society when itwas founded in 1975 at the WhitneyHomestead. These days she servesas curator, proudly giving tours andrecalling some of the town's greattraditions, many of which she's been apart of.”Calantha Sears speaking after accepting her Essex Media Group Person of the Year award at the Lynn Museum.PHOTO: OWEN O'ROURKEWhen I got older, I served as one of thewaitresses at an afternoon tea that was also heldduring the show — that was a real honor.— CALANTHA SEARS"My mother was a member when theGarden Club started in 1927," she wrote."When I was about 9 or 10 years old, inthe 1930s, I remember participating inan annual flower show which was heldevery summer at the Town Hall."When I got older, I served as one ofthe waitresses at an afternoon tea thatwas also held during the show — thatwas a real honor. When my children wereof age in the 1950s, they too participated,just as I had."Sears was named Essex MediaGroup's Person of the Year for Nahant in2018. She was named Nahant woman ofthe year in 1967 and was named a localhero by the Bay State Historical Leaguein 1954.She has been on three town reportcovers. The gazebo at Bailey’s Hill wasnamed Sears Pavillion in her honorwhen it was re-dedicated by The NahantWomen’s Club, of which Sears wasthe president, at the town’s 150th yearcelebration.As of today Sears' four children havegiven her seven grandchildren and 12great-grandchildren and that, she hassaid, is her greatest accomplishment.
