December 2020, January, February 2021 New Hampshire Nursing News • Page 11 NURSES ON THE MOVE Andrea Tupick, RN, BSN was awarded Androscoggin Valley Hospital’s Employee of the Year. Peers wrote of Andrea that she is a “tireless advocate of both staff and patients. Her diligence, thorough work, kindness, compassion, and wonderful sense of humor have led AVH Surgical Associates through both good and difficult times. Andrea is a great leader and always has the entire team in mind when making decisions. Andrea goes above-andbeyond for the people who work for her, the providers and the patients.” and others worked long days, seven days a week, to prepare special patient rooms, add and train nurses, obtain supplies and protective equipment, learn about COVID-19, keep staff well-informed and stay ahead of the potential need. The effort included ICU boot camp-type training for up to 85 nurses transferred into the unit or former ICU nurses who were invited back to help. The most visible change was renovating rooms to become ‘negative pressure’ rooms, designed with advanced ventilation and filtration to prevent any airborne virus from contaminating adjacent areas. New ante rooms gave nurses and providers adequate space to safely put on and remove layers of protective gear. Dr. Margaret Carson has retired as professor of nursing from St. Anslem’s College. Carson began at the College in 1995 as the Director of Continuing Nursing Education and became a faculty member in the Department of Nursing in 2005. She taught community/public health, health assessment and fundamentals of nursing, and nursing synthesis. Her interests included global health, Vietnam nursing, and PTSD in incarcerated women. Erin Collins RN BSN formerly the Director of Women and Children’s Services including the Family Place at Concord Hospital has been appointed Interim Vice President of Nursing. Collins has also been the Director of Quality Performance and Patient Safety, Infection Prevention and Nursing Informatics at the facility. Collins replaces Amy Guilfoil-Dumont who resigned in May for family reasons. The cardiovascular rehabilitation program at Cheshire Medical Center has been certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). “We’re honored to have earned this certification for our department after such a thorough and arduous application process,” said Cheshire’s Cardiovascular and Neurology Services Clinical Leader Hilary Brown, RN MSN. “I am so proud of Jeannine Lucius, RN, and Kristi Farren, RN, who spearheaded the application process, for their ongoing commitment to maintaining such high standards for our patients and the program. Jody Case RN and her staff transformed Concord Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to care for COVID-19 patients which included fast-paced weeks of comprehensive planning, rapid physical renovations and critical care training for nurses brought into the ICU from other parts of the Hospital. “We were working toward being fully prepared to care for as many as 60 critically ill patients,” said Case, Concord Hospital’s Director of Critical Care. She Staff of the Progressive Care Unit at Exeter Hospital were recently recognized by American Association of Critical-Care Nurses who conferred a silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence. The Beacon Award for Excellence — a significant milestone on the path to exceptional patient care and healthy work environments — recognizes unit caregivers who successfully improve patient outcomes and align practices with AACN’s six Healthy Work Environment Standards. “I am extremely proud of the work the staff in the PCU has done to achieve this recognition,” said Elizabeth Keane, director of Exeter Hospital’s PCU. “Despite the additional work and stress brought by the COVID-19 pandemic, the team put in the extra effort needed to apply for and achieve this award. They understand the importance of nursing excellence and demonstrate this to our patients every day.” Exeter is one of only two hospitals in the state to currently hold a Beacon Award. In addition to the PCU, the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit and Family Center also currently hold silver Beacon Awards. Carol Tinkham RN was the recipient of the Memorial Hospital Spirit of Innovation award. Tinkham practices on the Medical-Surgical Unit. Arthoen Wolf, MS, APRN has been appointed as the Director of Resident Care Services at the New Hampshire Veterans Home (NHVH). In her new role, Wolf directs and supervises nursing services; social work; recreation therapy; quality, policy and staff development; volunteer services; chaplain; admissions; medical records; physical therapy and dieticians. "Arthoen comes to the position with a great wealth of knowledge and understanding of our veterans and their needs. She has proven that she will lead our resident services with compassion, integrity and advocacy," shared Margaret LaBrecque, NHVH Commandant. "Her approach to caring for our residents coupled with her professional experiences make Arthoen a wonderful fit for this position." Wolf earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Maryland at Baltimore and a Master of Science (MS) in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing from the University of Massachusetts in Lowell.
