- CHRISTMAS STORIES BY KAMILA ROSIŃSKA -"CHRISTMAS AND THE NUTCRACKER"One starry evening, when everything was bathed inmoonlight and all household members were alreadysleeping well in their beds, a wooden Nutcracker jumpedout of the old wardrobe in grandma's room. He had abeautiful red uniform and a cap, high black boots, a whitebeard slightly plucked by the children, and a torn arm.The Nutcracker lived in a drawer of an old wardrobe all yearround, and only when Christmas was approaching, would he beremoved from the drawer. Then, he would be placed under theChristmas tree next to a wicker basket full of hazelnutsbecause no one could handle hard nuts like him. This time, theCracker was looking forward to Christmas and decided tostretch his old rotten bones. Suddenly, there was a noise in theliving room! Through the slightly open window, snow stars fellon the scratched floor and piled on top of one another. But,what was that?! There was a star that was different from therest of the snowflakes, shining bright and much larger than therest of them. It flickered and glowed. The Nutcracker hadnever seen such a miracle and such a brightness before, evenon the most beautiful Christmas tree, and he had seen a lot ofChristmas trees in his cracker-nut life. “Who are you?” theNutcracker asked in surprise (it should be noted that theNutcracker was not a curious person and never askedunnecessary questions). “I am the Christmas star,” replied thefrightened beauty in a soft voice. The Nutcracker could nottake his eyes off the mysterious guest. She lit the room somuch that she woke up other Christmas decorations sleeping inthe wardrobe. The toys immediately jumped out of their boxedhouses. “Ooh, who is that?” the curious Jack-In-The-Boxasked. “It's the Christmas Star!” the Nutcracker answered.“What a beauty!” the round Christmas ornament exclaimed.Meanwhile, Christmas Star started to become weaker andweaker. Everyone could see that her glow was fading. “Whathappened, Christmas Star, why are you here?! You should shinein the sky! Tomorrow is Christmas Eve and there will be noChristmas without you,” said the big, colourful Lollipop.“Oh, Ineed some help! I was playing tag with the other stars andtripped over Aunt Comet's tail! I fell straight into your room. Iinjured my leg and I can't jump back into the sky,” answeredStar. “Christmas Star, you cannot stay with us! If people do notsee you shining in the sky, there will not be Christmas orChristmas Eve. You are the Christmas Star, someone special!” theNutcracker said anxiously. “The leg will not heal so quickly and Iwill not be able to jump very high on one leg,” Christmas Staranswered in a sad, soft voice. Tears flowed from her beautiful, shiny eyes that were as round as pearls. The toys sadly watchedthe beautiful guest who unfortunately could not stay with them.“What are we going to do now?” the Gingerbread Boy asked. “Wehave to confer,” the Nutcracker replied. The Christmasdecorations gathered in the corner of the room. They began todiscuss, consult, and whisper among themselves. Only the softrustling of their coats could be heard. The Nutcracker, as theoldest of the toys, assigned tasks to everyone because the onlyway they could help Christmas Star was by working together.“We have a plan, we are ready, and we will help you get back tothe sky,” the Nutcracker said to Christmas Star. There was acheerful sparkle again in the eyes of the Star. On the oldwardrobe in the room, there was little Leopold's bow, so twoChristmas tree angels with a Christmas tree chain flew into theair on their tiny wings and landed on the wardrobe. The chain tiedthe bow immediately, and the little angels carried them down, just next to Christmas Star.“Christmas Star, you will fly to thesky. I made an arrow from a Christmas tree twig, you only needto hold on tight,” the Nutcracker said, handing a small star apiece of twig finished with spruce needles. The Star did as theNutcracker told her and the Christmas tree decorationsstretched the slightly frightened bow of little Leopold. Using theChristmas tree branch, they shot the Christmas Star straight intothe sky. The Christmas tree bells rang softly like drums and thelittle Christmas tree reindeers were kicking their feet in theexcitement.“We did it!!!” the toys called with one voice. The skyseemed to shine brighter and the little Star winked at her friendson the ground as a sign that she arrived home. A friendship hadarisen in their hearts, in which there is no place for fear andanxiety, and the little hearts of friends are full of good deeds.“It's time to rest, my dears. It's Christmas Eve tomorrow and alot of work awaits us,” the Nutcracker said to his Christmas treefriends. They all returned to their boxes in the old wardrobe.Itwas a magical evening, full of warmth, goodness, and love. Noone else, apart from Christmas decorations and a little Star, knew about it.102 TRAVEL.LOVEPOLAND
