Thursday January 7 2021 The Star 19 Mazda SUV slots neatly into range MAZDA’S CX-30 didn’t win the New Zealand Motoring Writers’ Car of the Year Award for 2020. That title went to Mercedes- Benz’s plug-in, fully electric EQC 400 sport utility vehicle. It would be fair to say I was a little ambivalent about the result, the CX-30 was at the top of my voting form, and I’m not 100 per cent convinced electric vehicles are the cars for today, at this stage of development the infrastructure to support EVs isn’t comprehensive enough. That aside, I still stand by my voting criteria, the CX-30 as a series is a fine range of mid-size SUVs that simply make you feel special when you are inside or driving. I evaluated the 2-litre GSX and the 2.5-litre GTX in these columns last year, this evaluation surrounds the $50,990 four-wheeldrive Limited, which also has the 2.5-litre engine. There are four variants in the CX-30 range – it starts at $41,490 for the entry-level front-wheeldrive, and ends at $54,990 for the all-wheel-drive Takami. The GTX (4WD) lists at $44,990. All are high value models, Mazda is on a course of producing premium cars at a good price, its entire product range is tempting. It’s interesting that Mazda’s nomenclature for the CX-30 is out of kilter with its other sport utility vehicles – CX-3, CX-5, CX-8 and CX-9. The CX-30 slots in-between the three and the five, it complements both, yet it is a standalone model that impresses with its versatility. Load space is generous, and it takes care of the criticism the CX-3 copped, rear occupant area is spacious. Now, I’m not criticising CX-3, I happen to particularly like that car, but if you want just that little bit of extra space and comfort, the CX-30 would be the way to go and it builds on the success of CX-3, nothing is been left out. In fact, it gets a bit more kit, especially so for safety with a very long list of passive and active elements that easily earn the range a five-star Australasian New Car Assessment Program rating. Major items in the range-topper include full leather trim with heated front seats, keyless entry and ignition, satellite navigation, head-up display, radar cruise control and paddle gearbox shifters. Of course, there are numerous other features, but the point is that in Limited specification the CX-30 is loaded with kit, and that will lure the buyer who likes plenty of gadgets. Under the bonnet there are few surprises. The naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine is fitted across a lot of Mazda product, and it stands out for its healthy power FUNCTIONAL: The Mazda CX-30 has practicality and performance. MAZDA CX-30: The Limited model is high on specification. outputs and relatively frugal fuel usage figures. Mazda’s claims are 139kW and 252Nm, with a combined cycle fuel usage average of 6.8-litres per 100km. The latter figure is not surprising because Mazda’s SkyActive range of engines have been built with efficiency as a key manufacturing ingredient. There’s also automatic stop/start which saves a few precious drops of fuel when the car is stationary. I couldn’t match Mazda’s fuel figures during my time in the CX-30, but I did get close with an 8l/100km figure showing when I took the test car back to the dealership. At 100km/h on the highway the engine is ticking over quite unstressed at just 1800rpm, offering a 5l/100km instantaneous readout. The CX-30 is fitted with a sixspeed torque converter automatic transmission. Mazda has stuck with this type of gearbox and I’m pleased about that, many of its competitors have gone with either continuously variable transmission or dual clutch-type gearboxes, but Mazda has proved there’s still a place today for the traditional. Its six-speeder works beautifully, shifts are smooth and quick enough, and there’s also a sport mode if you feel the need for greater engine • Price – Mazda CX-30 Limited, $50,990 • Dimensions – Length, 4395mm; width, 1795mm; height, 1540mm • Configuration – Fourcylinder, four-wheel-drive, 2488cc, 139kW, 252Nm, six-speed automatic. • Performance – 0-100km/h, 9sec • Fuel usage – 6.8l/100km urgency. In terms of performance, the CX-30 will reach 100km/h from a standstill in 9sec and it will power through an overtaking manoeuvre (80-120km/h) in 5.9sec. These are healthy times and serve to prove the strength of the engine. I took the evaluation car on much of my usual inland route on the roads near the Malvern Hills. The CX-30 is a sublime highway cruiser, it is quiet and incredibly refined. Riding on quality, sport specification Dunlop tyres (215/55 x 18in), there is a lot of rubber on the road, and that transmits good feel to the steering wheel. Of course, there are a multitude of electronic safety systems working for the driver, they are there if sensors dictate the driver needs assistance. One that I’m quite fascinated by is G-Vectoring Control Plus, it intervenes if g-force is deemed too severe, slowing the vehicle mid-corner with a clever braking sequence, it isn’t violent but it is noticeable. Otherwise, the CX30 has handling ability way beyond its design brief, it feels sporty, and that’s unusual for a vehicle which is destined for a more mundane role, but if you look at Mazda’s sports car heritage, it’s no surprise that its sport utility vehicle line-up has elements that draw on that experience. I’ve driven three CX-30 models and have enjoyed each one. I particularly like the concept, while the size of it also appeals to me. I’m hoping to get a drive in the Takami at some stage, it features a new-generation engine and has mild hybrid technology, I can only imagine it would further my enthusiasm for the CX-30. How the newcomer will affect sales of its stablemates will be interesting to see; however, while it may lure a CX-3 or CX-5 buyer it will certainly appeal to buyers who may have been tempted by other brands.
