Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Gardeners given repeated legionnaires’ disease warnings • By Susan Sandys HEALTH AUTHORITIES are repeating their warnings about gardening safely as cases of legionnaires’ disease continue into summer. <strong>The</strong>re were seven cases of legionellosis reported for the month of November in Christchurch, followed by five cases in December. <strong>The</strong>re were four cases in October and seven cases in September. <strong>The</strong> total of 23 cases for the spring and summer period in the Christchurch territorial authority area so far compares to 20 in the area for the same period last year. Legionnaires’ is a form of pneumonia, caused by the legionella bacteria that live in moist organic material. People can catch the disease by inhaling airborne droplets or particles containing the pathogen. Gardeners are at particularly high risk of catching the disease as the bacteria thrive in bags of potting mix and compost. <strong>The</strong> illness may be mild but can sometimes be fatal. It is more common in older people, particularly if they smoke, have poor immunity or a chronic illness. However, sometimes even healthy young people have died from legionella pneumonia. Symptoms can include dry coughing, high fever, chills, shortness of breath, muscle aches, headaches and diarrhoea. If you have these symptoms, you should contact your general practice team right away for advice and let them know you if have been handling potting mix or compost.
