Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz NEWS 3 Homicide victim was set to appear in court • By Anna Leask and Kurt Bayer A MAN killed at an east Christchurch property on Sunday was to have appeared in court yesterday on charges of assaulting police, wilful damage and resisting arrest. But in a twist, his alleged killer was in the dock instead – and faced abuse from the dead man’s family. Michael Joseph Graham, 57, died at a house on England St, Linwood, on Sunday. Emergency services were called at 2.50pm. When they arrived he was dead. The active charges he was facing were withdrawn yesterday morning. Soon after, the man charged with murdering him appeared in the same court. Nathan Te Hana, 46, was arrested on Tuesday night. Court documents reveal he lived at the same property as Graham. The property is made up of three Housing New Zealand homes – and it is unclear whether Te Hana lived with Graham or was an immediate neighbour. Yesterday police released Te Hana’s name and photograph, appealing to the public for help to find him as they wanted to speak with him about the alleged murder. Yesterday, as Te Hana was brought into the dock, Graham’s son shouted abuse. He was asked to leave the courtroom and was escorted out Thursday January 7 2021 The Star by security staff. A duty lawyer asked for name suppression on the grounds that Te Hana wanted to tell his family directly of his plight. Judge Stephen O’Driscoll declined name suppression and remanded Te Hana in custody without plea to the High Court in Christchurch on February 4. – NZ Herald False alarms keep city firefighters busy • By Matt Slaughter CHRISTCHURCH firefighters attended 6236 false alarm incidents between 2018 and 2020. A false alarm is a call where there was no fire or other emergency requiring intervention to prevent injury, death or loss of property. Fire and Emergency New Zealand attends more than 20,000 false alarm calls every year nationwide, which can amount to about 50 to 70 per cent of all call-outs at some fire stations. The number of false alarm call-outs in Bruce Irvine Christchurch was 2296 in 2018 and 2407 in 2019. This number decreased to 1533 last year. Of these, 196 were deemed malicious incidents where alarms were activated deliberately in spite of there being no real fire or other emergency. Of the false alarms since 2018, 1412 were found to be made in good intent. Other reasons for these call-outs ranged from accidental alarm activations (1867) and faulty alarms (2147). Two hundred and fifty three false alarm causes were undetermined. A fire service call-out used to cost Fire and Emergency New Zealand about $1250 to attend and a percentage of this amount was reclaimed in fines. Senior fire risk management officer Bruce Irvine said this is not the case anymore and punishment or further action is only considered when false alarms are continually made by a person, business or other party. “We used to have the ability under the New Zealand Fire Service Act to be able to charge for false alarms. We don’t now. “What we now do is work with the occupant and if they refuse to do anything, then what we can do is, in some circumstances, disconnect the fire alarm from Fire and Emergency New Zealand, which then means that their building can’t be occupied for the use that it is designed for,’’ Irvine said. Harjit Singh and his business, Nekita Enterprises Ltd, have been fined by the Employment Relations Authority after it was discovered Singh’s business was operating a dual payroll system, which paid some employees less than minimum wage. Singh operated various liquor stores including 10 Super Liquor franchises. Super Liquor has exited the stores run by Nekita Enterprises from their brand and taken steps to better monitor compliance within their franchise network. War veteran cricketer dies One of New Zealand’s last surviving World War 2 veterans has died aged 100. Former firstclass cricketer and tank driver Alan Burgess, who was born in Sydenham, died on Tuesday night in Rangiora. Burgess was born in 1920, the son of Thomas Wills Burgess and Vera Adelaide Eldridge. There was a minute’s silence at the New Zealand v Pakistan cricket test match at Hagley Oval yesterday to mark his death.
