Since getting along is a byproduct of genuine
attraction on the part of co-workers in a small
business, it is harder to find people who will get
along. They donʼt have to work to “get ahead”
just to “stay put.” In a small company, people
really do get along from the start, or they never
will. Corporate employees have to deal with
hundreds of personalities. It is unlikely that so
many people will have enough in common to
get along well all the time. They simply have to
“put up with each other.”
BUILDING A TEAM
The first thing you should try to accomplish as
the owner of a new small business is building a
“team.” You have to hire people not only on the
basis of their skills and how well you (the
owner) like them, but also how well your entire
staff gets along. In a small company, people
who get along well will work longer and harder
for you.
One way to build this type
of staff is to include your
current employees in any
decision to hire a new
person. Have everyone
sit in on your second interview with applicants.
Ask what they think. First impressions are often
misleading. You and your staff may decide at a
future date that you made a mistake about
whom you accepted, and a few good prospects
who were too shy to make a good first impression
may be lost to you. But people who like
each other are more likely to put in those late
night hours to help one another.
