Village Voice February/March 2021FIELDS INKING'S WOOD Part 9Fig. 9 Bronze Age crouchedBuriAl, MickleFieldSo far, we have established that LiDAR imagesunexpectedly reveal clear evidence of whatappear to be field boundaries in King's Wood,that the underlying soft chalk rather than theexpected clay with flints would have allowedearly farmers to plough, that historical evidencefinds no evidence for medieval or Saxon use ofthe fields and so suggests a Roman or earlierorigin. Four centuries of Roman occupationresulted in an intensive agrarian economy andthere is abundant evidence of Romano-Britishactivity close to King’s Wood with the Romanroad along the Wycombe valley, two farmsteadsin Micklefield and, most recently, the possibilityof a Roman villa site in Gomm Valley nearCock Lane.Pre-Roman Iron Age evidenceThe King’s Wood fields are much bigger than issuggested by what little is known about Romanfields in the Chilterns, and their banks are muchbigger than expected, the product of immenselabour over centuries. The field patterns ofRoman villa farms were generally based ontheir Iron Age predecessors, since ‘changingthem involved hard work’, observed OliverRackham. So what evidence is there ofpre-Roman farming activity? One of theMicklefield farmsteads, only 600m from King’sWood, confirms both Roman occupation andpre-Roman two-way ploughing dateable tomiddle or late Iron Age periods.Bronze Age evidenceFurther evidence of a pre-Roman presence inMicklefield is the discovery in 1931 of theskeleton of a man buried in a crouching positionin an oval grave cut about 4 1/2 ft deep in thechalk rock. There were no associated objectsother than a few flints, but it is thought likely towww.pennandtylersgreen.org.ukbe an Early Bronze Age burial (c.1800 BC) andwas on the slope of the hill below Gomm'sWood above the Micklefield Road and not farfrom the farmsteads. We also know that the twoIron Age hillforts at Wycombe and WestWycombe were both preceded by Bronze Agesettlement.Neolithic evidenceGoing back still further, A 5.4 x 3.2cm Neolithicflint flake trimmed, it is thought, as an awl, wasfound at the top end of the Micklefield valley inthe south-western corner of King’s Wood. ANeolithic flint axe was found in a field next toCock Lane just north of the railway line, and ona grander scale, a possible Neolithic flint minewas discovered when the railway was beingbuilt in c.1897.
