Why not employ, on a volunteer basis, retirees and others to offer short courses for other folks aged 55 and better? By the Autumn of 2011, and with the assistance and support of Canterbury College (an affiliate college of the University of Windsor) we launched ElderCollege in southwestern Ontario. ElderCollege usually offers about 80+ short, inexpensive, courses on virtually any subject one can imagine. We even have something we call the “Buffet Option” which allows a person to take up to 12 courses in one semester for a single price. Among the courses offered we also include courses on history, music, art, financial planning and personal wellbeing. Course registrations generally run at about 1,200 “Persons in Seats” so ElderCollege has become an immensely popular alternate learning and social activity for many seniors in Essex and Kent counties. All courses include a “social” break with goodies! Many courses focus upon history and related subjects. For example in the Autumn 2018 semester we had courses on The Royal Tour of 1939; The Great Lakes Great Storm of 1913; Canada and the Depression 1929-39; and a real delight, Antique Ladies Undergarments and Our Mother’s Trousseau. One of the more popular type of courses are educational bus trips. For example, we had a two-semester course devoted to the Sydenham River from its approximate source east of Strathroy to its end at Lake St. Clair. We’ve had two heritage bus tour courses into Lambton County including the Oil Museum, the Moore Museum, the Arkona Museum at Rock Glen. Bus tours also have included theater from Huron Country Playhouse at Grand Bend to performances at Stratford. We have also had bus-trip courses to art collections in Toronto and Cleveland. And roughly every second year we have our famous ElderCollege fossil hunting course at Rock Glen. Local bus-trip courses have included Vanished Villages of Essex County and two separate bus-trip courses to Dresden in search of black community history. Other bus-trip courses have included St Thomas and its railway history as well as historical sites in Elgin County such as the Backus-Page House Museum. One exploration bus-trip course included Southwold and an opportunity to meet the “mayor” of Tyrconnell. In spring semester 2018 we had a three day bus-trip course which included Bayfield, Goderich and two fabulous Huron County museums, Clarke Point Lighthouse, and the “School on Wheels” in Clinton. Courses are often held at retirement residences where any resident is free to join a course. We also hold courses in churches, community centres and retiree clubs. ElderCollege courses are generally fairly short ranging from a usual one-session, two to three hours to a maximum course length of 6 x 2 hour sessions over 6 weeks (these are rare!) ElderCollege courses have neither tests nor exams nor even assignments but for music and art courses. Courses are offered entirely by volunteers and these are often professional people or persons with By C. Lloyd Brown-John, Kingsville an interest in a subject such as wood carving or model railroads. Course are also often held at restaurants where food and drink are featured. For example in autumn 2018 we had our third course on “Craft beers and Spareribs” at a great rib house in Leamington. We’ve had courses on Italian wines and pastas plus courses on wines of the world and foods of Morocco. Southwestern Ontario’s ElderCollege has “campuses” in virtually every community in Essex County as well as Chatham and sometimes Blenheim. We also are aware of a few romances which have emerged from people taking the same courses together. For so many people ElderCollege has offered amazing opportunities to learn about and to visit other communities from Tilbury to Bothwell and Forest to Port Stanley. The informal motto of ElderCollege is “If it ain’t fun then it t’ain’t worth doing.” ElderCollege Southwest Ontario operates from the offices, and under the auspices, of Canterbury College for which we are grateful.
