The bottom borders of this issue contain popular superstitions.

This FREE magazine is distributed in most of Sarnia-Lambton.
One Person - One Crazy Idea
I truly admire the people that take
a chance on a crazy idea. After all, if
it doesn’t catch on, almost no one will
even know you tried. But if it
does... you might be amazed
by what it can become.
A long time ago, along
the St. Clair River in Port
Lambton, there was a party
and campfire where you were
asked to bring your own beer
and your own chair. Someone
got a bit more creative and
brought a couch instead.
What happened next started
a whole chain of events.
That couch arrived on my
brother Dave’s front yard the
next day with a sign attached
to it which read, “This is a
Chain Couch. Keep for one week and
then pass it on, NOT to the dump! Good
luck will come your way.”
So the following Sunday it landed on
another lawn in Port Lambton, but this
time with an end table as well. Before
long it was a scene to behold; the couch
now with a mannequin sitting on it,
wearing various articles of clothing,
listening to tunes on a Sony Walkman
through headphones, with a coffee table,
the end table with a lamp and numerous
knick-knacks strewn about. I remember
it spending a week on my neighbour’s
lawn in all its well-established glory. They
had to turn away people that thought it
was a yard sale. “No, you can’t buy the
Walkman” they would say. “It’s not a
yard sale, it’s a Chain Couch!”
So... this was not exactly a noble cause,
but it was a lot of fun (and probably a lot
of work).
Fast forward 40 years or so to this
past June when Wendy Marsden placed
13 painted rocks along the boardwalk in
Point Edward along with a sign inviting
people to add to Rocky, the Growing
Snake. “Help him grow to make people
smile” it said. She’d seen the idea online
and was hoping to have 100 rocks in the
by Mark Moran, Publisher
snake’s length. As of August 17th, it’s
now at 7870 rocks, about two feet wide
in most spots and over 800’ long. It’s not
uncommon to see one rock painted with
a positive message on a trail, but this has
taken it to a whole new level.
The Point Edward waterfront is
beautiful even on the very worst days
of the year, but Rocky adds another
special aspect to it. With Lake Huron
and the St. Clair River in view, along with
passing boats and lake freighters, US
and Canadian flags on both sides of the
international crossing, French fry trucks,
people of all ages walking along the trail,
others fishing on the banks, soccer fields
off to the east, the Rotary Flag Plaza with
hundreds of bricks dedicated to kind
messages and lives lived and, of course,
the twin Bluewater Bridges. I don’t know
if there’s a nicer scene in all of SW
Ontario.
In various media reports Wendy has
given all the kudos to the community.
“I can’t take credit for this,” she told
the Sarnia Observer. I disagree. Yes, of
course it took hundreds of people from
near (and visitors from very far) to make
Rocky what he is today, but it started
with one person carrying through with
what they felt was a good, and perhaps
crazy, idea.
Thank you from all of us Wendy!
A Memorable Time
I remember clearly the summers of 1943
and 1944. I was eight and nine at the time
when World War II was still on. I lived on
a farm about three miles from Ipperwash
army Camp in Ontario. Ipperwash was
the last camp that the soldiers came to
before sailing to Europe to join the rest
of the troops over there.
The back of our farm went right down to
the shore of Lake Huron. It was very sandy
soil there, so we grew a lot of peaches,
pears and apples. The officers from the
camp liked to march their men down via
the lake and up into our orchards for mock
battles. About three p.m. they would come
up our back lane, past our house and out
to the Lake Road where they would march
the 3.5 miles back to camp. Many times
the officers would take pity on the soldiers
and let them lie on our back lawn under
our shady elms for about a half-hour.
We had a well outside and a pump at
it. I would be delighted to see the soldiers
coming and I would rush to the well to
pump water for them to get a drink.
Some had their own canteens that they
filled and the others just drank out of our
community granite cup that hung on the
pump. No one seemed to be concerned
about germs. They were just so grateful
for a cool drink and a rest.
These soldiers were just young men,
some only in their late teens. They were
lonely and frightened to be going to war.
I had no fear of these men as I knew they
would do me no harm. Life was so simple
and free in those days.
Soon the officers in command would call
them to order and march the men down
the road. I remember two or three of the
soldiers took off their boots and socks
while sitting on the lawn. They wore heavy
wool socks that offered no protection to
the sand that worked its way into their
boots and irritated the skin, causing huge
blisters. These men with the sore feet fell
behind the rest, and they were limping
slowly up the road. My father had a soft
heart, so he would take his little ’39 Ford
truck and go pick up these stragglers and
drive them right to the army hospital at
the camp to have their feet tended to.
These young men were so grateful for the
ride they would often have tears in their
eyes. Our gasoline, however, was rationed
during the war, so we had to be careful not
to waste it foolishly, but my father never
felt that this was a waste of fuel.
The soldiers had every Sunday afternoon
off. There were no amusements at the
camp and time hung heavy, so they
would often go for a walk on the highway
by Alma Hackett • from Daytripping Sept-Oct 2002
as
near the camp. Most Sunday
afternoons my dad and I
would take the car and
see if we could find two or
three soldiers to bring home for supper.
They were delighted to have a home
cooked meal and gladly came with us.
Many of these fine young men who ate at
our table went to war and never returned.
The students in public school were
asked to pick milkweed pods, since the
silky lining inside was used for making
parachutes. We used large burlap bags to
pick into, and when these were full the
teacher sent them away to a factory.
We were all encouraged to buy War
Savings Stamps. We would give the
teacher 25 cents and she would give
us a stamp to lick and put in our blue
savings book. The money was sent to the
Government and after the war we got the
money back with interest.
We also had food stamps and blue meat
tokens, which were used to buy sugar,
coffee, flour and meat plus other food that
was rationed. When our stamps ran out,
there were no more until the next month.
My mother learned to be frugal.
The airforce base at Centralia, Ontario,
was also quite close to us. We would run
outside when the army planes flew over,
they were such a novelty in those
days. Since they always had
big numbers painted on the
bottom of the wings, my
brother would write down the
numbers and watch for the planes to
come back again; it was a game he liked
to play. The pilots were daredevils and
they would swoop down at us when we
were in the fields working. One time my
cousin, a slim pretty teenage girl, was with
us up on top of a load of hay. The planes
kept buzzing closer and closer and one
time she reached up with a pitchfork and
actually touched the plane. She thought it
was a great joke and enjoyed the attention
of the airforce pilots immensely.
When the war ended in May 1945, we
had wonderful celebrations in London
and in our hometown of Forest. Parades
bands and open cars carrying the returned
soldiers went up and down the streets.
However, sadly, some did not return and
for their families it was a sorrowful time
and the parade only added to their pain.
The Second World War has left a
memory with me, which I shall never
forget. Every year on November 11th,
I am one of many people who proudly
wears a poppy, for where would Canada
be today if it wasn’t for these brave,
wonderful men who fought to keep
Canada free.
The chicken clucked and scratched,
raised her head and said, "Mr. Mouse, I
can tell this is of grave concern to you,
but it is of no consequence to me. I
The mouse turned to the pig and
told him, "There is a mousetrap in the
house! There is a mousetrap in the
house!"
The pig sympathized, but said, "I am
so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is
The mouse turned to the cow
The cow said, "Wow,
The Mouse Trap
returned to the house, head down
and dejected, to face the farmer's
mousetrap alone.
That very night a sound was heard
throughout the house - like the sound
of a mousetrap catching its prey.
The farmer's wife rushed to see
what was caught in the trap. But in
the darkness, she did not see it was a
venomous snake who was caught by the
tip of its tail in the trap. The snake bit the
farmer's wife. The farmer rushed her to
the hospital, and afterward she returned
home, but with a fever.
Everyone knows you treat a fever
with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer
took his hatchet to the farmyard for the
soup's main ingredient. But his wife's
sickness continued, so friends and
neighbours came to sit with her around
the clock.
To feed them, the farmer butchered
the pig. The farmer's wife did not get
well; she died.
So many people came for her
funeral, the farmer slaughtered the cow
to provide meat for all of them.
The mouse looked upon it all from
his crack in the wall with great sadness.
So perhaps next time you hear
someone is facing a problem and think
it doesn't concern you, remember -
when one of us is threatened, we are
all at risk.
I unabashedly love autumn and even
though it is the harbinger of colder
things to come, I prefer to live in its
fleeting amber, scarlet, and bronze
moments.
True autumn is defined by John Keats
in his poem from 1819 titled Ode to
Autumn as a:
“Season of mists and mellow
fruitfulness,
Close bosom friend of the maturing
sun…”
His words on the subject are plentiful
and add a bit of class to my otherwise
mundane observations. Keats’ whole
poem is worth the Google.
I look forward to the refreshing early
days of fall to take their rightful place,
and dispel the heat and humidity of the
summer months. I am more than ready
to don sweaters and scarves, jacket
and tam; strew pumpkins and gourds
I don’t always go the extra mile,
but when I do, it’s because I missed the exit.
Fall Fever
By LouAnn Geauvreau-Karry, Kingsville • from Daytripping Sept-Oct 2020
around my cluttered house to create
vignettes of fall; and randomly scatter
red and gold leaves accompanied by
capped acorns on tabletops in my living
room.
After reading through a variety of
modern poems about autumn, I have
come to the conclusion that there are
two schools of thought when it comes
to the “ber” months. There are those
who bemoan the passing of summer
and equate fall with
death and dying. I
am obviously not
of this persuasion.
I am a member of
the second group ~
who see fall as a
“And all at once, summer
collapsed into fall.”
Oscar Wilde
new beginning: the fall colours vibrant,
the harvest something to celebrate.
The mascot of fall is the pumpkin. I
love pumpkins in all their orange glory
and various incarnations. If orange is not
your cup of tea, your options are endless:
white, pink, green, gnarled, warty, or
fancifully fake. I love to see pumpkins,
vines still attached in the fields, or piled
high at roadside stands, or set out just
so on front porches and verandas.
What could be
further from death
and dying than
to be welcomed
home by a friendly
pumpkin?
Another reason
635 Broadway Street
WYOMING
226-307-0772
I love the fall is the welcoming food.
Roadside stands boast the harvest.
Stews and chili warm the heart and soul.
Mashed potatoes and roasts, be they
pork, beef or lamb herald the heartier
months, and pumpkin and apple pie
satisfy our seasonal sweet tooth.
I consider fall a new beginning—a
time to get back to our “regularly
scheduled programs.” Though this
fall may be different in comparison to
other years, we can still find ways to
celebrate this golden season even if we
cannot return to our regular schedules
the same way as in the past. We adapt,
adopt new ways, follow the wisdom
set down by our health organizations,
and do our best to enjoy what the new
season has to offer.
As “summer collapses into fall,” may
the passage of time find us renewing
our resolve.
Back in the Old Days ...
Responses to a newspaper’s request that older people
write in to tell kids how hard things were in the old days.
• Back in the 1970’s we didn’t have the space shuttle to get all excited
about. We had to settle for men walking on the crummy moon.
• In my day, we didn’t have days. There was only time for work, time for
prayer and time for sleep. The sheriff would go around and tell
everyone when to change.
• In my day, we didn’t have dogs or cats. All I had was Silver Beauty,
my beloved paper clip.
• When I was your age, we didn’t have fake doggie-do. We only had real
doggie-do, and no one thought it was a damn bit funny.
• In my day, people could only dream of hitchhiking a ride on a comet.
• In my day, we didn’t have fancy health-food restaurants. Every day we ate
lots of easily recognizable animal parts, along with potatoes drenched in
melted fat from those animals.
• In my day, we couldn’t afford shoes, so we went barefoot. In the winter we
had to wrap our feet with barbed wire for traction.
• In my day, we didn’t have no rocks. We had to go down to the creek and
wash our clothes by beating them with our heads.
• In my day, we didn’t have hand-held calculators. We had to do addition on
our fingers. To subtract, we had to have some fingers amputated.
• In my day, we didn’t have water. We had to smash together our own
hydrogen and oxygen atoms.
• In my day, we wore our pants up around our armpits. Monstrous wedgies,
but we looked snappy.
• Back in my day, “60 Minutes” wasn’t just a bunch of grey-haired
liberal 80-year-old guys. It was a bunch of grey-haired liberal
60-year-old guys.
• In my day, we didn’t have virtual reality. If a one-eyed
razorback barbarian warrior was chasing you with an ax,
you just hoped you could outrun him.
• In my day, we didn’t have MTV or in-line skates. No, it was
45s and regular old roller skates. The 45s always skipped, so to
get them to play right you’d weigh the needle down with quarters,
which we never had, so we’d use our skate keys instead and end up
forgetting they were taped to the record player arm so that we
couldn’t adjust our skates, which didn’t really matter because those
crummy metal wheels would kill you if you hit a pebble, and in
those days roads had real pebbles.
Lulu - A Marigold That Wouldn’t Give Up
Being a little short of money one late
September, yet wanting some kind of
floral decoration for the occasion when my
women’s club would meet at our house,
I searched the garden for something that
would make a nice table centerpiece.
The Michaelmas daisies had pretty well
gone to seed, and so had the zinnias.
What was left of the petunias had become
‘stringy’, and the roses had all gone. All
I could find was a very lovely marigold
plant. It had grown into quite a bush, its
pale gold flowers so close together that you
could scarcely see its foliage.
Not quite what one would expect to see
gracing a table, I had to admit, but there
was nothing else. So I dug up the whole
plant, pressed it carefully into a clay pot,
then slipped the pot into a bright yellow
bowl.
“They look real,” said one of our group
the afternoon of the club meeting.
“They are,” I said.
“They look exactly like some kind of
marigold!” exclaimed another.
“They are,” I repeated.
Ten pairs of hands felt, pinched, and
stroked the leaves. Ten noses sniffed the
pungent, lemon-mint aroma.
“They ARE real. I thought they must be
plastic!”
I kept the plant on a
small table close to a
window, and it kept right
on blooming until late
November - long after all
the other marigolds in the
garden had been pulled up,
blackened by frost. And gradually a series
of little buds came and went - all turning
dark, drying up, and eventually falling off.
It was quite obvious the plant was trying
very hard to bloom again.
“It can’t re-bloom, so don’t expect it to,”
warned my husband. “Annuals only bloom
once, and then they’re finished.”
“Sh...h... h,” I cautioned. “Pretend we
don’t know that!”
My husband looked at me queerly, then
went down into the basement to work on
the broken chair he was fixing.
For some reason - I’m no longer sure
why this was - my marigold had a name.
It was Lulu!
“How’s Lulu!” our youngest son would
ask immediately on his return from school.
“Is she still trying to bloom?”
A close look would soon show that she
was. But the buds never got any bigger,
and I often wondered why “she” didn’t
by Eileen Cade-Edwards, London
from Daytripping Sept-Oct 2003
give up trying, for as fast
as the new buds came
they would darken then
fall off. The soil in the pot
was simply covered with
these little half developed
buds.
“But they do look a bit
bigger than they were,” our son cried
hopefully one day. “Take a look!”
I took a look. They were just as small, I
thought. “We must remember,” I told him,
“it’s only meant to bloom once. That’s
what being an annual means. But I think
it’s quite pretty the way it is - like a little
fern tree.”
“I still think it will bloom again,” insisted
my son.”It’s trying so hard.”
By the end of December, the pretty little
“fern tree” pushed out yet another crop of
buds definitely bigger this time. But in due
course these, too, blackened and fell off.
“What happens if she never does
bloom?” our eldest son asked, suddenly
taking an interest in the plant.
“It won’t matter,” I told him. “As soon
as it warms up outside we’ll plant her near
where she grew last year and then see
what happens. After all, Lulu has survived
all the other marigolds by a few months
TUES. TO FRI.
10AM - 5PM
already.”
And then, with little warning, it was spring!
The sun, shining through the windows was
almost hot and overpoweringly bright.
The sap was already running in the
willows, turning the fronds into yellow
streamers, and the sticky buds of the
horse-chestnuts seemed almost ready to
pop.
And Lulu had not been idle! Almost
every hour of the day we had watched
those ever-fattening buds. And there were
masses of them.
Before long the little miracle occurred,
for there, on the small table close to the
window was a perfect little pale golden
bush. Lulu was in full bloom for the second
time in just over half a year!
Quite a few of our near neighbours
stopped me in the street: “What’s that
lovely yellow plant in your front window?
It looks like a marigold.”
“It IS a marigold,” I told them, waiting
for their looks of disbelief.
Some of them eyed me sheepishly.
“Marigolds THIS time of the year?
There was little point in explaining how
hard Lulu strived to accomplish this feat,
so I answered, with my fingers crossed:
“It’s an early-blooming variety!”
Of course, Lulu died eventually, but it
was great having her around while winter
came and went.
University Philosophy 101 taught
me one very important lesson. 8 am
Monday morning is way too early to
be subjected to University Philosophy
101. The only other thing I gleaned
from that “morning after” class was
if you missed any of them (which was
fairly common at that hour and day),
you could borrow notes from students
who took that class up to 30 years ago
and simply modernize a couple of the
“current” analogies. The curriculum
never ever changed since the ancient
Greeks first fashioned it out of their
lofty ideals and deep bath tubs. Those
guys would probably do well in today’s
society, but unfortunately they would
likely be pontificating these deep
thoughts from beneath a paper hat. I’m
sure if Plato were alive today, many of
us would be more than a little surprised!
Here in what we like to consider
modern day civilization, we tend
to remember our silver screened
philosophers like Arsenio Hall, who
used to scratch his chin and ponder out
loud “Hmmm?” Jerry Seinfeld would
start out many a routine with “Why is
it that..?” And another great thinker,
George Carlin, even philosophized
about his never ending name: “Ge Or Ge
Or Ge Or Ge” Still, with my modest B- in
that early morning philosophy class, I
sometimes find myself in that curled up
“Thinker” pose with conundrums that
would surely send Nietzsche searching
for God. I know I’ve stayed up all night
wondering where the sun went after it
sunk into the horizon until, finally, it
“dawned” on me. And I’ve spent the
better part of an eternity rounding off
infinity in more than one math class.
But you will have to agree that some
of these musings constitute earthshattering
morality. I mean does killing
time actually harm eternity? How much
deeper would the oceans be if sponges
didn’t grow there? And why is it that
almost every famous landmark in the
world is located right next to a souvenir
shop?
Others queries are closer to home,
such as: How come the label always
falls off my tube of Krazy Glue, yet glue
doesn’t stick to the inside of the glue
bottle? And if you wanted to recycle
your blue box, what would you put it in?
Further, when they manufacture that
Piece of Mind
By Joan Richardson, London • From Daytripping July-Aug 2003
21st Century Philosopy: Plato vs Pluto
environmentally damaging Styrofoam,
how do they package it for shipment?
Maybe they just cut it up into those
little noodles first and save themselves
a whole lot of bother?
Philosophy to me has always been
unintelligible answers to insoluble
problems. I mean have you ever
imagined a world with no hypothetical
situations? What DO you call someone
who hates bigots? Why have worlds
never been conquered by people
named Alexander the Average, Ivan
the Bland or Attila the Ho Hum? And
if a tree falls in the forest and no one is
around to hear it fall - where are they?
Of course, if you prefer not to warp,
er, wrap your mind around these
mind-bending conundrums, you might
consider the more pedantic second
thoughts like: What colour do Smurfs
turn when you choke them?; or Why
don’t sheep shrink when they get wet?;
or How do you know when it’s time to
tune your bagpipes?; and What, exactly
is the speed of dark? My Dad used to
say “Any philosophy that can be put
into a nutshell, belongs there.” But
then Willie Nelson must have added
“Anything that is too stupid to be
discussed intelligently must be sung.”
Personally, I’ve always had more
trouble with physics class and the
concept of time, than anything that
philosophy professor doled out year
after year after year. In light of the fact
that I can receive e-mail from a pal in
Australia and answer it a full fifteen
hours before it is or was or is about to be
sent - see? I told you it’s a problem for
me. So, if I go to all the trouble of saving
time, when do I actually get it back,
and does it accumulate any interest
in the interim? If one day we end up
travelling at the speed of light, will the
luggage handlers then have to lose our
baggage in advance? And exactly how
many weeks are there in a light year?
Boggles the mind, doesn’t it?
Well, all this weighty pondering is
starting to tax my little blonde-covered
airhead, so I’d best go lie down, but I shall
leave you with a quote from yet another
deep philosophical (and somewhat
tattered) T-shirt. The Big Questions: 1)
Know thyself (Socrates); 2) To thine
own self be true (Shakespeare); 3)
Never wash whites with colours (Mom).
Superstitions... It is bad luck to light three cigarettes with the same match.

As you may have guessed by now, it’s for people 55+
Remembering Barbie
By Paula Eyles, Hamilton
With the current Barbie craze, I can’t
help thinking back to when I was young
and had an original Barbie. My younger
sister had a soft and floppy baby doll
that she called Lenore. We played with
our dolls for hours, dressing them up
and taking them everywhere we went.
One Christmas, my parents bought me
a hand cranked sewing machine. My
mom taught me how to sew using this
little machine and I loved making things
on it–cranking away. I started sewing
clothes for my Barbie doll out of scraps
of material my mother had left over from
outfits she made my sister and me.
At the same time, my grandmother
worked at the Bell Telephone company
as a telephone operator. She took a few
of the outfits I had made Barbie to her
workplace to show her colleagues how
talented her granddaughter was. When
she came home, she told me she had
several Barbie doll clothes orders from
her friends, and they wanted to pay
for these to give to their children and
grandchildren. My mom and dad agreed
as long as my schoolwork was not
affected. I was in business!
One of the outfits everyone
wanted was a square dance dress
that had seven layers of ruffles. I
made these out of a red and
white gingham tablecloth
my mom donated to the
project. It took hours
to make one of these
dresses as the ruffles
were made by hand
and then carefully sewn
together. For evening wear, Barbie had
a red, ball gown. Mom cut up strips of
white fur from an old hand muff and
made stoles to go over Barbie’s shoulders
when she wore the ball gown. My dad
was a machinist and helped keep my
little sewing machine running in smooth,
working order. Grandma loved being my
volunteer sales rep. There were seven
outfits in each set of Barbie clothes, and
I sold them for $10.00 a set. Those were
the days!
One day, my mom told us that she
had some sad news to share. Our cousins
who lived on a farm in the country had
a house fire. They had lost most of their
clothes and toys. She thought it would be
good of us if we gave our cousins some
of our favourite things. Our parents had
always taught us to be kind to others and
since we saw our cousins all the time,
none of us hesitated. My Barbie was
adopted, clothes and all, by my cousin
Marilyn and I played with her when we
went to visit.
It has been almost 60 years now
that I said goodbye to Barbie
but over the years I have
thought of her often and
how much fun my family
had working together in our
underground business. During
this time of a Barbie revival
perhaps other families are
also remembering their
Barbies in a gingham
square dance dress or
red ball gown with a
Identity Crisis from Daytripping Sept-Oct 2003
my own home. I settled down for a long I stood my ground, staring him down until
evening of home schooling.
he vanished, returning with a single pork
‘Man’s best friend,’ the author began, chop -- the nicest one of the eight-pack, I
‘is his self-image.’ That made sense, even noticed.
though it was obviously written before At the end of Chapter Six I returned an
today’s political correctness called for overdue library book with nary a blush or
equal gender treatment. No problem. I stammer, just a cool, polite apology and
could change that on each page.
the fine. I could almost see the author
All I needed, apparently, was a positive beaming with satisfaction at this student’s
self-image. Resources I didn’t know I application of his rules. Self-abnegation
possessed began to emerge, including was vanishing fast in the smoke of burning
the capacity to reach limitless goals. Selfconfidence
determination to be somebody.
came gushing, not trickling, By the last page of the last chapter, I was
from deep inside.
ready to face the world as the ‘new me’
Next morning at the supermarket I the author had promised. Was it showing
rang the bell summoning the butcher already? I’d see if it worked on my family.
from the back room. I lived alone, I boldly Arriving at my daughter’s house fully halfan-hour
explained, what use was a pack of eight
before I was expected for lunch,
pork chops? Chapter Four nudged me and I knocked firmly on the door, no timid tap
FALL 2023
In the local bookshop, I tried to decide
on a pleasurable book for a quiet evening.
Would it be a best-seller I ought to read,
or a light whodunit I wanted to relax with?
As it happened, neither won.
Before deciding, I moved to a shelf
of ‘how to’ titles. Nothing there unless I
wanted to build a boat, sew a dress in an
hour, or learn how to make a gourmet meal
in the microwave. Then I spotted one book
that instantly drew me inside its covers to
the index.
Its title ‘Be a New You ’ was a temptation,
a challenge, a need! I suddenly realized I
was sick of the old me, ready for a drastic
change. The book promised results by the
eighth chapter. What do I have to lose? I
asked myself, not waiting for an answer.
The book and I went home. It was an
investment, cheaper than a night school
self-improvement course, I reasoned. The
makeover could evolve in the privacy of
in case the baby might be sleeping, no
apology ready for arriving early. Unh-huh.
The new me was self-assured, never again
to be diffident, irresolute, weak (words that
were anathema to the author bent on my
complete metamorphosis. From inside
I heard three-year-old David shouting,
“Mommy, there’s somebody at the door!”
“Hi, darling,” I called through the
mailslot. “Tell Mommy it’s Nana.”
Whereupon the light of my life called
again to his mother. “Oh no, Mommy, it
isn’t anybody. It’s only Nana.”
I rolled my eyes. So much for psycho
cybernetics. So much for an unfamiliar,
inflated self-image. The few areas where
my new importance had worked had no
affect on a toddler. I decided I was more
comfortable being ‘only Nana’. I’d go back
to the shop and find a book more suited
to just me, myself and I. Say, for example,
something like: ‘How To Be Yourself’.
Let’s Not Forget
By Maryellen Lusk, Dover Centre • From Daytripping Sept-Oct 2011
While working at the Wallaceburg
Museum years go I had the privilege to
work with a wonderful volunteer called
Murph. Murph was someone everyone
would want to be their dad. He always
had a story of days gone by. At this time
it was the 50th anniversary of the end of
WWII. We were doing a display with the
photos of the soldiers from Wallaceburg
that were lost in action. While walking
through the display area and chatting,
Murph stopped in his tracks. Spying
the photos, he went over
and began picking up
the pictures, collecting
them in his hand and
saying, “I know these
guys, this is Shorty, he fell
in a foxhole and couldn’t
get out. This is so and so...”
And a story went with each
young face he recalled. As
this 70-something man held
this pile of photos of young
men in his shaking hands, I
couldn’t help thinking of these
young men who never got to
grow old, but Murph had not
Superstitions... A dog howling at night when someone in the house is sick is a bad omen.

It’s the advertising that makes this magazine possible, and free!
In my work I often see families doing
their valiant best to follow the desires of
their senior loved one. “Mom would not
want that,” or “Dad said we would have
to drag him out of his house.”
These are conversations, and while
good they do not meet the standard
required to ensure that your wishes are
prioritized and your choices
are respected.
All reading this article
understand the need for a
Last Will and Testament,
a.k.a. A Will. This document
ensures your wishes are
followed after your passing.
So, why wouldn’t you apply
the same focus on your
wishes while you are still
alive?
A Living Will expresses
your wishes and desires
when you are less able
to do so for yourself.
Focused on care and end
A Path to Wellness
Self Advocacy and the Real Living Will Process
By Chris Treftlin, Shine at Home, Sarnia
SARNIA
of life direction, the Living Will can
be as important as your Last Will and
Testament.
Here is where I ask you to do
something more advanced than the
average, and who wants to be average
anyway?
Take a pad a paper and write down
Welcome to ...
all of the blue-sky things you want for
yourself in your senior years.
The list may look like this:
My Real Living Will
1. I want to live in my house as long as I
am safe. Spending money to ensure my
safety is approved. I wish to use all of
my resources to achieve this.
2. If I can no longer live at home then I
want live at this or that seniors living
community.
3. While alive I contribute to my church,
the Humane Society, the local Boys and
Girls Club. I wish this to be continued.
4. These are my interests, hobbies, and
on-going practices that I
habituate. Coffee in the
morning, and a drink of
whiskey after dinner. I hate
tuna fish.
Your list could be longer.
You get the idea. Let’s call
this a Real Living Will.
Now, how do I get
someone to ensure that
your Real Living Will is
respected?
You have documented
it. Now you have to find
the person, or people that
will make it happen.
With the document in
THE Club
hand, you review, then interview those
people in your life that would indeed
make this happen for you.
In most cases the family comes
around you and understands what you
want, and, importantly, commits to it.
Christine Wilson’s story
Chris was one of the residents in a
senior living community that I was
responsible for, more years ago than I
care to admit. She was a career teacher,
and never married or had children.
What she did have was awesome. She
had appointed three life-long friends to
take care of her affairs, as POA’s (Power
of Attorney) for care and finance, and
executrix’s of her Will. Christine took it
deeper. These ladies knew everything
one needed to know about the care
and feeding of Christine Wilson, and
they followed through for their friend.
Regular visits to Christine and regular
follow-ups with the community leader
team—Christine did it right.
So, there you are reader. I am offering
you a choice between your wishes
being respected and someone else’s
thoughts, ideas, and interpretation of
your wishes being the reality.
Here’s hoping you keep getting that
whiskey after dinner, and no one gives
you tuna fish...ever!
Punchline
Marty wakes up with a killer hangover. He opens his eyes, and sees a couple
of aspirin and a glass of water on the table. He sits up and sees his clothes
in front of him, clean and pressed. He then notices a note on the table:
"Honey, breakfast is on the stove. I left early to go shopping. Love you." He
goes to the kitchen and there is a hot breakfast and the morning paper. His
son is also at the table, eating. Marty asks, "Son, what happened last night?"
His son says, "You came home at 3 am, drunk and delirious. Broke some
furniture, puked in the hallway, and gave yourself a black eye when you
stumbled into the door." Confused, Marty asks, "So, why is
everything in order and so clean, and breakfast is on the
table waiting for me?" His son replies, "Oh that! Mom
dragged you to the bedroom, and when she tried to take
your pants off, you said, ‘Lady, leave me alone, I'm married'!"
School Days, Golden Rule Days
By Betty Popelier, Sarnia
Are you experiencing HAIR LOSS?
There are many moments in life
upon which to reflect. Some of the
most endearing to me were those spent
attending public school during the
1950’s, a few precious memories still
linger.
Having a February birth date meant
I was almost six years of age before
attending kindergarten. The two block
(yes, two block) walk was still scary to a
little girl who had never ventured out of
her backyard.
Thankfully, my mom accompanied
me that first fearful day. Dressed in my
little plaid skirt, frilly blouse and Buster
Brown shoes, I held on tight to her
hand as she escorted me to the fringe
of the schoolyard. I’m sure she had to
forcefully untangle my fingers, and give
a gentle nudge to coax me forward.
Being her first born, I’m sure this
was a difficult day for her as well.
Central School, located midway
on the east side of Greenfield Street
in Petrolia, was a red brick
building with two front
entrances, one designated
for boys and the
other for the girls.
The play areas were
also segregated. We
dutifully lined up at
the beginning of each
school day, according to
age and grade, waiting
impatiently for the bell to
ring.
The most terrifying
sight that first day was “the
strap”—long, stiff and leather,
hanging ominously alongside our
scarves and mittens. It was a constant
reminder of the penalty paid if we
chose to misbehave. Although never on
the receiving end, over the years I bore
witness to several students who were.
And the memories linger on......
The Valentine Days spent waiting and
silently praying while these cherished
cards were being handed out. You hoped
that a big pile would land on your desk.
The baseball games—one of the few
times boys and girls were allowed to
play together. Oh the fear of being the
last one called to join a team.
Staging Sleeping Beauty, I was cast as
one of the three good fairies, had one
line which took me hours to memorize
and only one minute to nervously recite.
Singing “Down by the Old Mill
Stream” at a Variety Day with my best
friend Dee Dee. What a duo.
The dreaded exam result days when
papers were handed out according to
grades. Everyone watching the teachers
expression as the results were laid on
their desk.
“Field Days” involving all four Petrolia
schools including Maude Street, Jubilee,
and Queen Elizabeth II. This was an
opportunity to swap stories and make
new friends.
Watching the coronation
of Queen Elizabeth II on
June 2, 1953, on a tiny,
black and white television
set with students from all the
other schools.
Waiting in terror as the
first vaccines to be given
in public schools were
administered. What brave
children we were.
The pride of becoming
a senior student and
being assigned the
task of looking after
a little kindergarten
girl during recess. I
felt very grown up.
The thrill of choosing a
graduation dress. The pride
upon receiving my grade eight
diploma. The fear of leaving all that
felt safe behind, but shaking with
anticipation for the future ahead.
Memories fade and I’m sure there
are many more locked within this aged
brain, but these are a few that have
escaped and been caught, bringing a
smile to my face, a tear to my eyes and
a little more spring to my step.
The Dogs of our Lives
The first dog we ever had was
Blackie. He was a young, medium-sized
Labrador retriever. He was an outside
dog that we got soon after moving into
our new house my dad had built. I was 5
or 6 at the time and had no idea where
we got him from (not my dad, the dog!).
We lived on the edge of a square
mile bush in old Sandwich West before
it became part of Windsor. We would
take Blackie out on runs in the fields.
He was a good, happy and gentle dog.
Unfortunately one rainy day he got
loose from the chain on his doghouse
and met an ignoble end a few streets
over, by a garbage truck. I cried and
cried of course.
Almost immediately my oldest
brother, under instructions from my
parents, brought home another dog,
a small puppy. Something was wrong
with it though and they took it back. We
never even had a chance to name it.
Then one day I went outside to
play and there was Mickey. He was
a beautiful puppy, a cross between a
German Shepherd and some smaller
breed with ears that were down, not up.
He was an outside dog too and lived
his whole life in his doghouse.
My parents didn’t believe in a dog
living in the house with them,
but it never hurt Mickey. We
padded and insulated his
house continually and put
endless pieces of carpet
over the door. Only in
the dead of winter when
it went down around zero
would my dad allow us to bring
him down in the basement. That was
always exciting to me, knowing he was
down there. All of us visited him. It must
have been exciting for Mickey too, as he
always left a present on the basement
floor.
In a family of five boys Mickey
seemed like just another brother or kid
to me, though admittedly he was all
furry and ran on four legs. Whenever
I was hurt and crying over some
enormous wrong and I just had to tell
somebody about it, I would crawl inside
of his doghouse and tell him all my
problems. He always listened too, didn’t
give me heck or laugh at me. I thought
his house was pretty neat inside. I told
him I wouldn’t mind living in it. It was
by Kenneth Lapointe, Windsor
from Daytripping, May-June 2005
dry and sheltered from the wind
and rain. It had a nice floor, sides,
a roof and a door, all mostly draftproof.
It had his own smell too.
We fed him table scraps.
Scraps of toast, meat, oatmeal
porridge, gravy, bones, anything
and everything left over from
breakfast, lunch, and supper
all went in his dog dish. He
thrived on it. I don’t think we
ever needed to buy dog food.
We constantly took him on runs out
in the fields and bush, just like Blackie.
Rarely was he on a leash. Usually he just
went where we went, whether we were
playing hockey on the ice in the fields or
on an expedition out to First or Second
Creek. Our area was full of pheasants
back then and you would see his head
bounding up and down above the weeds
while he was running and jumping after
them. He also got sprayed by skunks
more than once. Whether he just didn’t
learn his lesson or just accidentally ran
into them I never knew. But even with
the tomato juice baths, the smell hung
around for two weeks. Daily he’d roll
around in the dirt like a man possessed.
To us kids he was our protector.
You knew he would defend you against
anybody, whether mean kids or mean
dogs. Once when another kid was
chasing me around the outside of our
house and I was pretending to yell
like I was scared, Mickey came out of
nowhere and was all over that kid. He
didn’t hurt him, but it’s a warm feeling
to know somebody will protect you.
When I was in grade school, I had
my own bodyguard. You see, I had done
grade three and four in one year, so after
that I was about the smallest kid in every
grade. One kid who knew kid-style judo,
in exchange for teaching him chords on
the guitar, would beat up anybody who
picked on me. We were great friends
and it was a great arrangement!
Then Mickey got old, just like an old
man. He got gray around his muzzle,
put on a bit of weight, wouldn’t run as
far and would occasionally grunt from
his stiffening limbs. He even started
having little fits where he would go rigid
and foam at the mouth for five minutes
or so. We thought it was heartworm.
He eventually had a stroke and
died right in front of our house but he
had lived a long life of fifteen years
full of kids, good food, adventure and
happiness. What more could a dog
want?
Each new season is a great time
Nordic pole walking originated in
Europe, basically as an out-of-season
right, a training activity, as the arm
movements mimic the arms in cross
some people think, the benefits of
adding poles to our walking can be Photo credit: www.health.harvard.edu/exercise-and-fitness/
huge. Walking in itself, is a fabulous type
The Times Have Always
Been Changing
By Peter R Smith, Brights Grove
from Daytripping Summer 2023
I don’t remember much about my
paternal grandfather, he was the last
of my grandparents to die, but I was
still only 8 years old when he died in
1959. However, last year I was back in
the U.K. visiting family and I had the
opportunity to visit his grave in London
where I grew up. He was brought up a
strict Baptist, he wouldn’t have alcohol
in the house and the only activity
permitted on Sunday was reading the
bible, so I wondered how we would get
along if we met today, with me being a
social drinking sceptic with left leaning
politics.
This got me thinking about how the
world has changed since his death and
what he would make of it all. I imagined
myself trying to explain to him why,
when not at home, people pay more
for a bottle of water to drink than they
do for a similar amount of gasoline, or
how a computer works and why we
need them, or how an MP3 player can
store all that music in a tiny memory
chip. He didn’t own a TV or any form
of record player, but he would
have been familiar with the
wind-up 78 rpm gramophones
of his day. Technology has
come so far since then, would
someone from his era just
be overwhelmed, surely things
changed so much slower in his
time? But as I thought about it
some more, I realised that he
had probably witnessed more
change in his life than I have in mine.
Born in 1874 into Victorian England
at the height of its power, he had been
witness to two world wars that had
upended the social order, squandered
the wealth of Britain and most of Europe
and resulted in the rise of America as
the predominant world power. Not only
that, but science and our understanding
of the cosmos had been revolutionised
by the discovery of relativity and
quantum mechanics. Technology
Life is better
on an e-bike.
had developed the phonograph and
gramophone, practical electric lightbulb,
movies, radio, radar, television, powered
aircraft, motor vehicles, transistors,
computers, jet engines, helicopters,
electron microscopes, the laser, space
exploration, organ transplants, DNA,
the atom and hydrogen bombs and
much more. One little family story that
gives an insight to his understanding of
technology involves watching TV at our
house. He didn’t approve of it, but felt
it was acceptable to listen in to the BBC
news presenter provided that no one
else in the room talked. Because it was
rude to interrupt the newsreader when
he was speaking to us.
But it wasn’t just the great discoveries
and technological developments, during
his lifetime, that made a difference in
people’s lives. The discovery of penicillin
and vaccines against the great killers
such as smallpox, whooping cough,
diphtheria, yellow fever, tuberculosis
and polio etc. not only saved lives,
but encouraged smaller families, once
more children were expected to survive
to adulthood. Today it’s hard for us
to understand the difference these
vaccines made in people’s lives,
but I still remember how my
mother worried about the
latest outbreak of Polio and
how she ensured we all got
the vaccination as soon as it
was widely available. Finally,
even mundane things like food
changed over his life time as fresh foods
gave way to processed and frozen foods
that made seasonal foods available
over the rest of the year and things like
breakfast cereals appeared in grocery
stores.
On second thoughts, if he came back
today I think he could deal with most
of the changes since his death, given a
little time to understand them, but he’d
still want to drag me away from my
beer and into church!
Corunna, Almost Canada’s Capital
By Tracy Kingston, Corunna • Photos from Moore Museum, www.mooremuseum.ca
It’s hard to believe
all considered and
that 200 years ago
rejected. Corunna
the little village of
was rejected as it is
Corunna, Ontario
not only within sight
was considered as
the possible site for
Canada’s capital.
In 1823, a British
survey party (under
of the United States
but also considered
too far west by the
leaders of Quebec
and Eastern Ontario
wooded site south of
when
Clair River.
farmer Louis Rendt,
lobbied the Upper
The village was
named Corunna
after a Napoleonic
a provincial surveyor,
was sent to confirm
and revise the first
Murray, Baird, Paget, Beckwith, intersection of Hill and Baird Streets.
Bentinck, Beresford and Colborne This central square was to be the site
Streets still bear their names today. The
original map showed streets laid out in
a pattern resembling Britain’s flag the
Union Jack; a basic grid including 4
of parliament buildings had Corunna
became the capital as hoped and
remains today as a park marked
with a stone cairn.
diagonal streets radiating from a central After Wilkson’s 1837 survey
Before Ottawa was bestowed with
the honour of becoming the capital of
Canada, York (Toronto), Kingston, and
Montreal along with Corunna were
confirmation, Corunna was fit for
settlement. The village grew slowly
but at times boasted numerous
hotels, shoemakers, harness makers,
blacksmiths and general stores, as
well as a sawmill, cabinet maker,
wagon maker, tinsmith and two
shipbuilders. One notable schooner,
“The Kate Bully” was built in Corunna
but it met its demise in an 1869 storm.
The town became more connected
than ever in 1886 when the Erie
and Huron railway connected Corunna
to Lake Huron, Sarnia and to Lake Erie.
The community blossomed even further
as adjacent Stag Island was a haven for
tourists by the late 1800s.
Corunna’s industrial growth was
boosted again starting in the early 1940’s
with the establishment of Polymer, and
in later decades; Canadian Oil, Dupont,
and Petrosar. Although the hotels
are gone and the original businesses
replaced, Corunna continues to thrive
and prosper with its deep agricultural
and industrial roots.
2023 marks the 200th anniversary
The highlight of the year will be the
Corunna 200 Street Festival downtown
on Saturday, September 23rd. Lyndoch
Streets will be closed to traffic to host
No matter how many times an
expectant mother is informed of how great
motherhood is you never really get it until
you become one. There is no love known
in this world that is stronger than a mothers
love for her child. Even in nature you
know not to get between a mama and her
baby. As a mother you can complain and
punish and wonder why you ever wanted
to have children, but let someone else say
something about your child and the gloves
come off. Parenting is the wildest roller
coaster you will ever ride. Being a mother
of five, I have found that children have
amazing capabilities.
Concentration... those who say children
have a short attention span are kidding
themselves. My kids can be watching a
cartoon and a tornado could rip through
the front part of the house and they would
still be sitting there, their mouths hanging
open with an almost unblinking continuous
stare at the TV screen. If only they
could use their powers for good.
Could you imagine how fast the
homework would get done if that
type of attention were aimed
at math! How is it that you
can call a child’s name five
times and get no response
but whisper in another room
that he can have a cookie and the bionic
hearing kicks in? There is also something
I like to call selective speaking. Why is it
when you ask your child what they did
today the answer is always “nothing” or “I
don’t know” but they can spend the next
four hours on the phone or on MSN talking
about the days events to their friends. The
dexterity of a child’s hands has got to be off
the charts these days. I watch my daughter
text message on her phone and swear
we will need to take her to the hospital
to get her fingers untied. I once heard a
comedian hit the nail on the head when he
talked about the sudden overabundance of
hyper activity disorder in kids. With the
schoolwork, chores, part time jobs, video
games, cell phones, and iPods, kids need
the disorder to keep up with everything!
Why is it that children can’t remember to
call home when they are going to be late but
they can hear a song once and remember
every single word?
This special bond between
designed specifically to keep us,
A newspaper clipping from The Book
Keeper’s grand opening on September
27, 1980 hangs on the wall in Susan
Chamberlain’s office. The store’s history
is often front-of-mind for her. The Book
Keeper originally opened in Northgate
Plaza and has moved to different
locations within the plaza throughout the
years. In 2001, Chamberlain purchased
the store from owner Kathy Mitchell and
in 2010 the store moved to its current
location. Not every community has a
thriving independent bookstore. “It says
a lot about the city and the customer
support that we’ve had over the years,”
Chamberlain explains.
The Book Keeper carries a wide
selection of books and places hundreds
of special orders weekly. Customers
can look up current inventory or
reserve a book on the website:
www.sarniabookkeeper.com. Each
staff member brings a unique and
extensive knowledge of books and
they are especially good at making
recommendations. Alongside the
wide selection of books, the store
also offers a variety of giftware, board
games, and jewelry. Chamberlain saw
the local demand for these items at
Poppies, the gift shop inside Bluewater
Health that she opened in 2010. “These
additions have allowed The Book
Keeper to become the ideal place to
anyone who appreciates a unique gift,”
shares Chamberlain. During the recent
pandemic, The Book Keeper was the
go-to place to get puzzles, family board
games and of course books to get
through the quarantine.
The Book Keeper maintains
a strong relationship with the
community. Their current
location allows them the
space and flexibility to host
many unique events. With
the addition of an Adult Book
Club as well as a Teen Book
new readers to their store.
Preschool Storytime offers a
addition and this encompasses The
Book Keeper’s love of and commitment
to inclusion and diversity. Chamberlain
has invited several famous authors to
Sarnia for book signings. Some of the
most notable authors include Margaret
By Brian A. Keelan, Sarnia
Sad but true?
Arthur - a senior who was
not in the best of shape -
was in the middle of his first
workout in the gym when
he spotted a good-looking
young woman who was also
working out. He asked the
trainer, “What machine in
here should I use to impress
that gorgeous young lady
over there?”
The trainer looked him up
and down and said, “I think
you’d have your best shot
if you tried the ATM in the
lobby.”
Passing winds
An elderly couple, Ethyl and Murray, were recently attending church.
About halfway through the service, Ethel took a pen and paper out of
her purse, wrote a note and handed it over to Murray. The note said:
“I just let go with a silent passing of wind what do you think I should
do?”
Murray scribbled a quick note on the back of it and handed it back
to her. The note read: “Put a new battery in your hearing aid.”
Relativity. What is it really?
“When you are courting a nice girl, an hour seems like a second.
When you sit on a red-hot cinder, a second seems like an hour. That’s
relativity.” Albert Einstein
Stephen Wright on watching football with seniors
“I was watching the Super Bowl with my ninety-two-year-old
grandfather. His team scored a touchdown. When they showed the
instant replay, he thought they scored another one. I was gonna tell
him, but I figured the game he was watching was better.” Steven
Wright
Rodney Dangerfield… funny to the end
In April 2003, Rodney was entering the hospital for neurosurgery
and was asked by a reporter how long he would be hospitalized.
He replied: “If all goes well, about a week. If not, about an hour and
a half.”
Sadly, Rodney died 43 days later – just shy of his 83rd birthday.
His headstone reads: “There goes the neighbourhood.”
Why George quit singing in the shower
Ethyl told George on his 80th birthday, “I think it’s time you stopped
singing in the shower.”
“Why is that sweetheart?” George asked.
“Well,” she said, “Singing leads to dancing, dancing leads to
slipping, and slipping leads to paramedics seeing you naked.”
Two wolves: a good one to tell your grandkids
One evening an old Cherokee Nation man was telling his grandson
about a battle that goes on inside each person. He said, “My son, the
battle is between two wolves inside each of us; one wolf is evil - it is
anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt,
resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.
The other wolf is good - it is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility,
kindness, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his
grandfather: “Which wolf wins?”
The old man looked solemnly at his grandson as he replied, “The
one you feed.”
How did you find out you would be
did we get so lucky? Hoping but never
asking or hinting for grandbabies is hard
work, but the good news is that we have
two little ones, and one more on the
way!
How did we find out about these
upcoming happy occasions? Our dear
daughter-in-law is, to say the least, very
creative, and with our thoughtful son on
board it made finding out half the fun.
After enjoying a lovely dinner at our
son’s home, we were asked if we had
room for dessert. Of course there’s
always room for dessert. A large steel
soup tureen was brought to the table,
and placed in the middle. Well, our son
has always been famous for his crème
brûlée, and we wondered if this was a
very large version of the dessert.
Upon opening the lid, we were treated
Aunt Jenn and Uncle Sebastian. Amid
hoots and hollers, laughter and tears
appeared as we finally got the message.
We couldn’t believe our good fortune.
We couldn’t have been happier for
ourselves and for the young people
who were to become first time parents.
We always said we would like to have
them, and our dreams were to become a
We assumed the parents were poking
fun at the fact that Grandpaw had just
purchased a new excavator and that
anyone could have a digger—even little
people. Not so. That t-shirt was exactly
as it said. Sawyer was to be a new big
brother the following September.
Cute as a button, Charlotte Ashlan
came along right on time. We were
thrilled to look after Sawyer for a few
days and take him to the hospital to meet
his baby sister. He couldn’t have cared
less. He just wanted to go for another
ride in the truck back to the farm.
More happy news! We were
babysitting both Sawyer and Charlotte,
and upon directing them toward bath
time, discovered a sign on Charlotte’s
undershirt—Youngest Child Expiring
July 1st 2014. To say the least, we are
once again thrilled to be third time
grandparents, and ready to share in the
joy of the new little one.
Pumpkins!
Pumpkin is one of the most abundant
sources of beta-carotene, the vegetable pigment
that the body turns into resistance-building
vitamin A. It has a hefty portion of fibre and a healthy amount of
iron. A 1/2 cup serving has approximately 40 calories, 0 fat and 3.4
grams dietary fibre.
If you would like to make your own pumpkin purée, look for small
sugar pumpkins (sometimes called “pie pumpkins”), weighing no more
than five pounds.
1/2 to 1 tsp. nutmeg 1 to 2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 to 1/2 tsp. cloves
Mix cake and pumpkin in a bowl; mix well. Add spices to your taste.
Pour into ungreased 9 x 13-inch pan or 9-inch tube pan. Bake as directed on cake
mix box. Remove from oven and turn upside down on a large rack or platter. Remove
An Airbus 380 is on its way
across the Atlantic. It flies consistently
at 800 km/h at 30,000 feet, when
suddenly a Eurofighter with a Tempo
Mach 2 appears.
The pilot of the fighter jet slows
down, flies alongside the Airbus and
greets the pilot of the passenger plane
by radio, “Airbus, boring flight isn’t it?
Now have a look here!”
He rolls his jet on its back,
accelerates, breaks through the sound
barrier, rises rapidly to a dizzying
height, and then swoops down almost
to sea level in a breathtaking dive. He
The Airbus pilot
watch this!”
The jet pilot
watches the Airbus,
but nothing happens.
It continues to fly
straight, at the same speed.
After 15 minutes, the Airbus
pilot radios, “Well, how was
that?”
Confused, the jet pilot asks, “What
did you do?”
The AirBus pilot laughs and says,
“I got up, stretched my legs, walked
Counting My Blessings
By Jeanette Paddon, St. Thomas • from Daytripping Sept-Oct 2015
By the time you read this, it will
nearly be autumn. Somehow, that
seems incredible, as today is only the
first official day of summer. Yet, I know
how quickly time goes by, especially
in the summertime and even more so
as I grow older. Having nearly reached
seven decades, I appreciate life now
more than ever and try to spend more
time “smelling the roses.” After having
taken it for granted for so many years,
I realize now that life is a gift.
Over the years, so busy trying
to get through each day, I did not
always take time to simply enjoy the
moment. Suddenly I realize that the
best years are behind me, and now I
finally understand that success means
health, family and friends, not the
amount of money we have saved. We
all know people who have plenty, yet
do not know happiness.
Today, I am savouring every moment
of this perfect day. After spending the
morning cutting grass
and clipping overgrown
shrubs I found a spot
for a lovely new plant I
bought on a visit to my
favourite garden centre.
I am now enjoying lunch
outside while admiring
the fruits of my labour.
We have had plenty of
rain so everything is
flourishing, and nature
is blooming. The air is
balmy and fresh, which
makes me realize this is
the kind of day I looked forward to last
winter. Therefore, I will enjoy it for as
long as it takes and feel no guilt in not
doing something more productive; for
though work is important, so are rest
and contemplation.
Today, I am thankful for everything
that gives significance to my life. I lean
back in my chair listening to the birds
while looking at the numerous huge
trees that grace and give shade to
my neighborhood. As I watch a hawk
riding the air currents effortlessly I
see the trail of a jet so far up in the
skies; the jet itself is only a dot in
the azure blue. It is flying west, and
I cannot help but wonder where it is
going. I hope that everyone aboard
is heading for a holiday to visit loved
ones. This also brings to mind the trip
I may undertake with a friend next
winter, to a far off destination. TIme
will tell. Today, I will simply enjoy the
moment. Acrophobia fear of heights
I shouldn’t have been surprised that
it happened. After all, it was a perfectly
natural thing to occur. I probably
should be more surprised that it hadn’t
happened earlier.
I moved to the country after I married
and that, I have learned, has its own
particular learning curve. Although I’ve
been living here for more than 15 years,
the curve seems to be never-ending. This
particular thing happened in the fall, not
the spring as I would have expected. My
husband and I had been chasing off a
stray cat for a week or so, although stray
cats aren’t anything new or surprising—
our home is surrounded by dairy farms
and barns.
The surprise came when I was weeding
the front flower bed. I like to garden, but
I am a novice, so when I noticed the lilies
were tipped over at an unusual angle I
thought that’s what was supposed to
Kitten Conundrum
By Cindy Cade, Mitchell • from Daytripping Sept-Oct 2019
happen in the fall. I got
a little closer to see if I
could stand the flowers
up a little straighter and
surprise! There were
five teeny, tiny, furry
kittens nestled in at the
base of the plants. No
more chasing off the
stray cat! Mama had set up her nursery
in my front flower bed.
Although I am not a “cat person,” I
found that as the days grew shorter my
interest in the litter grew. “They started
mewing today,” I proudly announced to
my husband. (He grew up on a farm and
litters of cute kittens
had ceased to amaze
him when he was
about six years old). It
seemed my husband
wasn’t particularly
interested in their
progress. I became a
little possessive of the
brood in the flower bed. I would check
on them day and night, peeking out to
make sure that all five furry, little balls of
fluff were still there.
A few days later the kittens were
mobile—mobile enough to explore the
flower bed and play fight with each other.
The mewing was louder, so loud that I
could hear them through the living room
wall. I started giving progress reports to
my family and friends; this was usually
met with eye rolls and shrugs. When I
started coming up with cute names for
them, my husband just shook his head
and walked away. The miniscule concern
he had shown a few weeks earlier had
completely evaporated.
Inevitably the kittens will grow big
enough to move out of the flower bed
and find a new home; probably in one
of the big dairy barns down the road.
It’s possible that one or two of them will
stick around the “old homestead.” I’m
sure they will set off before the weather
turns cold and snow is in the air. That
will be my signal to hunker down for the
winter and wait for whatever curve ball
Mother Nature is going to throw my way
in the spring.
The village of Point Edward in
October 1944 must have seemed
a rather desolate place, especially
for anyone arriving from a larger
metropolis, from 2,000 miles away.
The north-eastern corner of the
‘smallish’ community was evolving
about this time due to war brides
arriving, and tradesmen settling
in from far away places (some
with military discharges) seeking
employment in the industries that
had been aiding the war effort. A
main concern at the time was the
shortage of building materials for the
construction of homes to house the
numerous families. The concern down
the road would be accommodating
the influx of school-aged children.
Everybody struggling together in
this little ‘corner of the world’ created
a common ground where friendships
were formed in a very short time. As
I look back to the age of five in 1949,
the wonderful sense of community
is felt today. School commenced that
year for me in a little building on
Monk Street while the new school,
Bridgeview, was being built. And who
could forget that fortress of a learning
place, Edward Street School, with its
dual entrance and large staircase that
seemed to reach ever so far—from
Three smaller faith communities
evolved within the larger one. The
three churches were the meeting
place for each of its own ‘family’ but
were attended by classmates of a
different religion.
My pre-teen years, in the early
fifties, were shared with exuberance
with my peers. The freedom of selfexpression
was experienced through
participating in school dances, roller
skating at Rose Gardens, ice skating
on Lake Chipican, hiking in ‘first
bush,’ bowling at Marcin Bowl, as
well as organized games and field
day competitions within the school. It
wasn’t difficult to find a few neighbour
friends to participate in a game of tag,
evy-ivy-over or ‘ring’ which was the
most fun after dark under a moonlit
sky. The long summer months were
filled with daily treks to the beach,
swings in the park and free treats
when the Imperial Oil picnic came to
Canatara. By the time school started
again, it felt strange to have to put
shoes on our leather-soled feet.
As time rolled on and high school
came and went, the work-world
beckoned and times changed. It is
with much pleasure that I visit ‘the
old haunts’ in my mind and enjoy
the memories of a time long gone.
It’s also very comforting to know
that I don’t have to go very far to see
familiar faces that remind me of a
close-knit community spirit that was
formed those many years ago.
