How did you find out you would be
granted the greatest job on earth? How
did we get so lucky? Hoping but never
asking or hinting for grandbabies is hard
work, but the good news is that we have
two little ones, and one more on the
way!
How did we find out about these
upcoming happy occasions? Our dear
daughter-in-law is, to say the least, very
creative, and with our thoughtful son on
board it made finding out half the fun.
After enjoying a lovely dinner at our
son’s home, we were asked if we had
room for dessert. Of course there’s
always room for dessert. A large steel
soup tureen was brought to the table,
and placed in the middle. Well, our son
has always been famous for his crème
brûlée, and we wondered if this was a
very large version of the dessert.
Upon opening the lid, we were treated

to several jars of baby food with t-shirts
tucked in between the jars. Puzzled
expressions were the norm around the
room, until we read the inscriptions on
the t-shirts—Grandpaw and Grandmaw,
Aunt Jenn and Uncle Sebastian. Amid
hoots and hollers, laughter and tears
appeared as we finally got the message.
We couldn’t believe our good fortune.
We couldn’t have been happier for
ourselves and for the young people
who were to become first time parents.
We always said we would like to have
grandbabies before we were too old to
get down on the ground to play with
them, and our dreams were to become a
reality. Sawyer John was born in August

Grandbabies & Grandparents
2011, and is a joy to be around.
How did we find out he was to have a
new baby sister? We were lucky enough
to be babysitting and Sawyer happened
to have a new t-shirt on that read Big
Brother with a picture of an excavator.
We assumed the parents were poking
fun at the fact that Grandpaw had just
purchased a new excavator and that
anyone could have a digger—even little
people. Not so. That t-shirt was exactly
as it said. Sawyer was to be a new big
brother the following September.
Cute as a button, Charlotte Ashlan
came along right on time. We were
thrilled to look after Sawyer for a few
days and take him to the hospital to meet
his baby sister. He couldn’t have cared
less. He just wanted to go for another
ride in the truck back to the farm.
More happy news! We were
babysitting both Sawyer and Charlotte,
and upon directing them toward bath
time, discovered a sign on Charlotte’s
undershirt—Youngest Child Expiring
July 1st 2014. To say the least, we are
once again thrilled to be third time
grandparents, and ready to share in the
joy of the new little one.
