Welcome to ... THE Club This magazine comes with a free, built-in, old fashioned fly swatter! Sunflowers Summer to autumn, and off to winter, what a lovely season! There is something so very cheery about a sunflower gazing at the sun on a clear blue day. For the past few summers we, at Sipkens, have to Falling planted a small field of sunflowers as part of Miracle Max Minions, a charitable Leaves organization. Not only is it a worthwhile cause, but we also have the added benefit of seeing these beauties every morning as we start our work day. It is like a smile that passes from the flower to a person. The joy of cool, dew-laden mornings, the maturing of summer vegetables and the grains in the fields—take a moment to recognize and appreciate the beauty Courtesy of around us. Sipkens Nurseries Nature gives us a good lesson, it is better to give than receive. Pass along a smile, a flower, some extra produce from your garden. Help a neighbour—even in just a little way. Autumn gives many of us a little extra time to consider the flowers. Don’t rush summer away. Don’t rush through fall. Appreciate each day as a gift. I came across a saying the other day. I don’t know who to give credit to but “If we believe talking kindly to our plants can help them thrive, imagine what speaking kindly to people can do!” Do you live in the BOONIES? The CLUB is available at all Lambton County libraries (while they last)! If you pause to reflect, you’ll find time to count your blessings. Welcome to ... FALL 2023 Here below are some helpful hints for your Autumn checklist: ❏ Care for your lawn so it can rebuild with cooler seasons with fertilizer or seed. ❏ Finely mulch leaves so they do not smother your grass and return nutrients to the earth. ❏ Top up mulch in gardens to insulate new plantings and refresh the look of your home. ❏ Change out your summer seasonal flowers for fresh autumn colours, and then change up to fresh greenery boughs and berries to create a warm welcome to your guests to welcome winter. ❏ Plant your seed garlic for next summer harvest. ❏ Add compost and manure to your gardens to improve the soil fertility. ❏ Collect seeds from your favorite summer annuals to sow next year. ❏ Create a habitat for the wild creatures in your yard with an area left ‘wild and untended’ with branches and leaves. ❏ Remember our feathered friends by leaving out seed heads and putting out feeders. ❏ Clean up empty pots and trays and return for recycle or reuse. ❏ Put a simple act of kindness into action.
