Counting My Blessings

By the time you read this, it will
nearly be autumn. Somehow, that
seems incredible, as today is only the
first official day of summer. Yet, I know
how quickly time goes by, especially
in the summertime and even more so
as I grow older. Having nearly reached
seven decades, I appreciate life now
more than ever and try to spend more
time “smelling the roses.” After having
taken it for granted for so many years,
I realize now that life is a gift.
Over the years, so busy trying
to get through each day, I did not
always take time to simply enjoy the
moment. Suddenly I realize that the
best years are behind me, and now I
finally understand that success means
health, family and friends, not the
amount of money we have saved. We
all know people who have plenty, yet
do not know happiness.
Today, I am savouring every moment
of this perfect day. After spending the
morning cutting grass
and clipping overgrown
shrubs I found a spot
for a lovely new plant I
bought on a visit to my
favourite garden centre.
I am now enjoying lunch
outside while admiring
the fruits of my labour.
We have had plenty of
rain so everything is
flourishing, and nature
is blooming. The air is
balmy and fresh, which
makes me realize this is
the kind of day I looked forward to last
winter. Therefore, I will enjoy it for as
long as it takes and feel no guilt in not
doing something more productive; for
though work is important, so are rest
and contemplation.
Today, I am thankful for everything
that gives significance to my life. I lean
back in my chair listening to the birds
while looking at the numerous huge
trees that grace and give shade to
my neighborhood. As I watch a hawk
riding the air currents effortlessly I
see the trail of a jet so far up in the
skies; the jet itself is only a dot in
the azure blue. It is flying west, and
I cannot help but wonder where it is
going. I hope that everyone aboard
is heading for a holiday to visit loved
ones. This also brings to mind the trip
I may undertake with a friend next
winter, to a far off destination. TIme
will tell. Today, I will simply enjoy the
