Sefton triumphs
in cricket final
Sefton won its first country
cricket title in three years
after its senior players
stood up in key moments in
ahardfought final against
Darfield on Saturday.
Rangiora’s showpiece
MainPower Oval cricket
ground hosted the final of
the CRV Ambreed Country
Premier One Day 2020/21
competition.
Ayoung and talented
Darfield XI batted first on
the firstclass ground, but
the side was in early
trouble at 33/2 after
Canterbury Country
paceman Jed Roberts
cheaply removed its
openers, brothers Zak and
Liam Foulkes.
Ryan Hughes batted
superbly to anchor the
innings before he was
stumped by Tim Harrison
off the wily bowling of Nigel
Granger for 64 off 80 balls.
It was then another
experienced and canny
Sefton campaigner, Jeff
Jones, who swung the match
firmly in favour of the
Seals.
Jones ripped through the
middle order, snaring four
key wickets and helping
restrict Darfield to 177,
being all out in the 45th and
final over.
Chasing the mediocre
total, Sefton’s run chase got
off to abad start, losing
Micah Campbell in the first
over.
Chris Warner (32 off 48)
and Matt Laffey (56 off 106)
knuckled down to repair
the innings, putting on 70
runs for the second wicket.
Acomposed unbeaten
halfcentury by Lance
Taylor steered the Seals to
the sixwicket win with 21
balls to spare.
Jones was named man of
the match for his
inspirational spell with the
ball. Sefton was thankful for
the experience and biggame
knowledge of Jones,
Laffey, Taylor, Harrison
and Granger to guide the
side to the title.
Plate final
Weedons beat Oxford
Rangiora in the premier
plate final, while
Greendale edged out
Allenton in the Senior
competition.
