The New Zealand Western Riding
Federation’s South Island
Championship Show was held at the
Mandeville Sports Club Centre last
weekend.
The show was hosted by the
Christchurch Western Riding
Association at its Mandeville
headquarters and marked the end of the
South Island season which runs from
October to the end of March.
Thirtytwo horse and rider
combinations from around the country
took part in the show, including stallion
Dunit Magnum Style, an American
quarter horse bred in Canada and
imported to New Zealand by ownerrider
Angel Marsh, of Wellington.
Show secretary Catherine Sellin, who
is also the federation’s South Island
vicepresident, said most competitors
came from the South Island.
People were attracted to the sport
because of the challenge, she said.
‘‘There are really high expectations of
horse performance and horsemanship.
You have to be precise,’’ she says.
However, the cowboystyle dress code,
which was less formal than other equine
disciplines, also appealed to many, with
riders favouring widebrimmed cowboy
hats, jeans with belts and westernstyle
buckles, cowboy boots, spurs and
colourful shirts with bling.
