The Twin Buttes huckleberry fields had for many <strong>year</strong>s been a mecca<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Indians from east <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cascades. Eah stuTuner as <strong>the</strong> huckleberries<br />

ripened, hundreds <strong>of</strong> Indians--men, women and children--migr<strong>at</strong>ed to <strong>the</strong><br />

berry fields using all modes <strong>of</strong> transport<strong>at</strong>ion including pack and saddle<br />

horses, wagons and automobiles. They put up <strong>the</strong>ir teepees in <strong>the</strong> meadows<br />

along <strong>the</strong> cold. mountain streams. Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> berry picking was done by<br />

women and. children while <strong>the</strong> men ga<strong>the</strong>red wood for <strong>the</strong> camp fires, looked<br />

after <strong>the</strong> stock and did some poaching when <strong>the</strong>y could get away with it<br />

by avoiding <strong>the</strong> county game warden.<br />

In <strong>year</strong>s gone by, <strong>the</strong> men went down <strong>the</strong> Lew<strong>is</strong> River (probably from<br />

<strong>the</strong> we8t side <strong>of</strong> Mt. Adams) for salmon, but <strong>the</strong> power dam cut <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong><br />

migr<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> salmon th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Indians had previously caught in <strong>the</strong> upper<br />

reaches <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lew<strong>is</strong> River.<br />

The Indian women dryed. most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> berries <strong>the</strong>y picked before slow<br />

fires except for some fresh berries th<strong>at</strong> were sold after <strong>the</strong>y left <strong>the</strong><br />

area. The influx <strong>of</strong> large numbers <strong>of</strong> unemployed white people into <strong>the</strong><br />

huckleberry fields led to complaints by <strong>the</strong> Indians who had previously<br />

had only a minimum <strong>of</strong> competition from <strong>the</strong> local white pickers. In 1933,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Yacoma Indian Council notified D<strong>is</strong>trict Ranger' Har' Welty th<strong>at</strong> it<br />

wanted a meeting with <strong>the</strong> Forest Superv<strong>is</strong>or <strong>at</strong> Twin Buttes to d<strong>is</strong>cuss<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir grievances.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> appointed time, I met with <strong>the</strong> group and <strong>the</strong> following news<br />

story and editorial, "Sorrows <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Yakimas" (both m<strong>is</strong>sing) th<strong>at</strong> appeared<br />

in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong>ian on August 211., 1933, <strong>is</strong> a pretty good description <strong>of</strong> wh<strong>at</strong><br />

took place <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> meeting. Quoting Chief Vellup, "I have spoken to <strong>the</strong><br />

end, nothing <strong>is</strong> hidden in my heart. Your words give me happiness. You<br />

are my friend. Now all <strong>is</strong> well between <strong>the</strong> whites and <strong>the</strong> Indians.1'<br />

L<strong>at</strong>er in <strong>the</strong> fall after <strong>the</strong> Indians had returned to <strong>the</strong>ir homes,<br />

many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wrilte people lingered on not realizing th<strong>at</strong> after <strong>the</strong> rain<br />

started, <strong>the</strong> unsurfaced road to Trout Lake would become impassable for<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir vehicles. The Forest Service and Army trucks had to come to <strong>the</strong><br />

rescue to bring <strong>the</strong> cars to <strong>the</strong> graveled road th<strong>at</strong> led from Trout Lake<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Evergreen Highway on <strong>the</strong> Columbia River.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> spring <strong>of</strong> 1934, <strong>the</strong> Regional Forester asked th<strong>at</strong> I accept a<br />

detail in <strong>the</strong> Regional Office in Portland to ass<strong>is</strong>t <strong>the</strong> Div<strong>is</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />

Engineerging in <strong>the</strong> overall superv<strong>is</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CCC program. I was<br />

reluctant to give up my responsibility for <strong>the</strong> work on <strong>the</strong> Columbia.<br />

He agreed th<strong>at</strong> I might retain control <strong>of</strong> activities on <strong>the</strong> Forest,<br />

leaving <strong>the</strong> Ass<strong>is</strong>tant Superv<strong>is</strong>or, Lester Moncrief, in charge. Th<strong>is</strong><br />

detail continued through September, 1.934 when <strong>the</strong> Regional Forester<br />

called me to h<strong>is</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice and <strong>of</strong>fered me a staff position in <strong>the</strong> Div<strong>is</strong>ion<br />

<strong>of</strong> Engineering with responsibility for road construction and CCC activities.<br />

I was very reluctant to give up my superv<strong>is</strong>orship on <strong>the</strong> Columbia.<br />

The Regional Forester said <strong>the</strong> salary would be $1,000 more than I was receiving,<br />

so after talking <strong>the</strong> m<strong>at</strong>ter over with my wife, I decided to<br />

accept <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer.<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> position enabled me to become well acquainted with <strong>the</strong> problems<br />

on most forests as well as personnel in <strong>the</strong> Region engaged in <strong>the</strong> development<br />

<strong>of</strong> transport<strong>at</strong>ion systems and <strong>the</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Civilian<br />

Conserv<strong>at</strong>ion Corps Camps.
