HENRY ROGERS TON S}TH<br />
1899 - 1980<br />
Henry Rogers Tonseth was born February 20, 1899 in Methow, Washington.<br />
He <strong>at</strong>tended <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Idaho and Montana.<br />
He began h<strong>is</strong> Forest Service career in 1923 on <strong>the</strong> Ghelan N<strong>at</strong>'i Forest, in..<br />
Washington. He was appointed as Forest Ranger in 1926 on <strong>the</strong> EightMile<br />
D<strong>is</strong>trict <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same forest. In 1934 he was transferred to <strong>the</strong> Paulina<br />
Ranger D<strong>is</strong>trict, Deachutes N<strong>at</strong>'l Forest. In 1962 he became <strong>the</strong> first GS-12<br />
D<strong>is</strong>trict Ranger in Region He produced nine rangers through h<strong>is</strong> training<br />
efforts, and h<strong>is</strong> d<strong>is</strong>trict, Fort Rock, (renamed from Paulina), was one <strong>of</strong><br />
four selected in <strong>the</strong> U.S. for intensive management study, lie retired in<br />
1968, having served as b<strong>is</strong>trict Ranger <strong>at</strong> Fort Rock for 34 <strong>year</strong>s, which was<br />
a record in Region 6. In all, he served <strong>the</strong> Forest Service for 44 <strong>year</strong>s.<br />
Henry passed away February 8, 1980. H<strong>is</strong> wife Velma preceded him in de<strong>at</strong>h<br />
December 24, 1945. He was a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bend Eagles, Elks, and Moose lodges.<br />
Survivors include 3 nieces, Darlene Owens, Bend; Helen Sopp, Methow,<br />
Wash.; and May Kiock, Se<strong>at</strong>tle, Wash;<br />
Wash.<br />

Fred TJrwyler, a n<strong>at</strong>ive <strong>of</strong> Portland, Ore., passed away <strong>at</strong> Portland on June 8,<br />
1980. He received h<strong>is</strong> educ<strong>at</strong>ion in Portland; in fact he <strong>at</strong>tended <strong>the</strong> Holinan<br />
School with Ray and Harold Engles.<br />
He was first employed by <strong>the</strong> Forest Service in 1925 as a packer <strong>at</strong> West 3oundary<br />
on <strong>the</strong> Willamette Forest and worked for Ray and Harold Engles during<br />
h<strong>is</strong> assignment on <strong>the</strong> Willarnette. About 1930 he transferred to <strong>the</strong> Zigzag<br />
D<strong>is</strong>trict <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mt. Hood Forest and worked for Harold Engles and liuck Hi<strong>at</strong>t<br />
as protective ass<strong>is</strong>tant. In 1937 he transferred to <strong>the</strong> Forest Service Warehouse<br />
in Portland and l<strong>at</strong>er worked with Elliott Roberts <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sellwood Shop.<br />
In 1949 Fred transferred to <strong>the</strong> Collowash Ranger D<strong>is</strong>trict, Mt. hood Forest<br />
as d<strong>is</strong>trict clerk and l<strong>at</strong>er was assigned to <strong>the</strong> d<strong>is</strong>trict ass<strong>is</strong>tant position,<br />
working for Evan Jones. He retired while on <strong>the</strong> Collowash D<strong>is</strong>trict, in 1962<br />
after 37 <strong>year</strong>s with <strong>the</strong> Forest Service.<br />
Fred was married to Freda Marsh on May 20, 1933, who survives and lives in<br />
Portland. Also a son and daughter and 5 grandchildren live in California.<br />
The writer, as Admin<strong>is</strong>tr<strong>at</strong>ive Officer on <strong>the</strong> Mt. }Tod, worked with Fred on<br />
various f<strong>is</strong>cal m<strong>at</strong>ters - a most pleasant person - always a smile - a pleasure<br />
to work with.<br />
