Dick was born in Portland, <strong>Oregon</strong>, in<br />
University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong> in 1937, and was<br />
<strong>the</strong> St<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong>.<br />

1914, received h<strong>is</strong> BLA degree <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
a reg<strong>is</strong>tered landscape architect in<br />
Dick's career was with <strong>the</strong> U.S. Forest Service. He was <strong>the</strong> forest Landscape<br />
Architect on five different n<strong>at</strong>ional forests before becoming regional landscape<br />
architect for <strong>the</strong> Forest Service Pacific Northwest Region <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong> and<br />
Washington, where h<strong>is</strong> responsibilities covered 19 N<strong>at</strong>ional Forests with more<br />
than 1,000 campgrounds and recre<strong>at</strong>ion sites, direction <strong>of</strong> master planning,<br />
maintenance and construction. He was responsible for <strong>the</strong> adrnin<strong>is</strong>tr<strong>at</strong>ie<br />
direction <strong>of</strong> 26 LA's, and for <strong>the</strong> design coordin<strong>at</strong>ion with <strong>the</strong> major Forest<br />
Service functions <strong>of</strong> engineering, titaber and land managenient. Dick worked<br />
as a landscape architect in Yellowstone N<strong>at</strong>ional Park, as site planner for<br />
<strong>the</strong> Bonneville Power Admin<strong>is</strong>tr<strong>at</strong>ion, and, <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> onset <strong>of</strong> World War II, as<br />
a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> U.S. Corps <strong>of</strong> Engineers team <strong>of</strong> landscape architects involved<br />
in <strong>the</strong> camouflaging <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Boeing Aircraft plant. During World War II, he<br />
was a naval <strong>of</strong>ficer in <strong>the</strong> Caribbean area.<br />
In 1960, Dick became a member <strong>of</strong> ASLA. In <strong>the</strong> Pacific Northwest 1apter,<br />
he served as secretary treasurer, vice president, president, and in 1969 was<br />
elected trustee. In <strong>the</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ional society, he served as chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lembership<br />
Qualific<strong>at</strong>ions Committee, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bradford Williams Veda]. Award Jury,<br />
and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> N<strong>at</strong>ional Executive Committee. Upon retiring from <strong>the</strong> Forest Service,<br />
he [nanned <strong>the</strong> Portland Qiapter <strong>of</strong>fice as general chairman for ASLA's<br />
71st Annual -meeting held in Portland, <strong>Oregon</strong>. Th<strong>is</strong> chapter <strong>of</strong>fice was<br />
establ<strong>is</strong>hed in conjunction with <strong>the</strong> AlA Chapter <strong>of</strong>fice headquarters and<br />
with <strong>the</strong> local AID chapter, thus forming a close associ<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se three<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essions in <strong>the</strong> Portland area.<br />
In addition to ASLA activities, Dick served as a pr<strong>of</strong>essional affili<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> American Institute <strong>of</strong> Architects, and cias president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong> Roadside<br />
Council when <strong>Oregon</strong>'s billboard law was sponsored by <strong>the</strong> Council.<br />
To h<strong>is</strong> many friends and coworkers, Dick's passing <strong>is</strong> a gre<strong>at</strong> loss. We will<br />
remember him for h<strong>is</strong> warm friendsüp, valued counsel and hard work for h<strong>is</strong><br />
pr<strong>of</strong>ession.<br />
