Larly in 1909 I was eng&ged aa "Forest £xpert' st $75 per month and<br />

assignàd to a tiiaber cru<strong>is</strong>ing perty in Montana. On July 1 I was a4vsnced<br />

in salary to $83.33 per aonth, but deitotad. in title to th<strong>at</strong> <strong>of</strong>'Poret<br />

Aas<strong>is</strong>tant". A prerequ<strong>is</strong>ite <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> job was th<strong>at</strong> one furn<strong>is</strong>h and maintain<br />

pack and saddle stock.<br />

In July, 1909 I was assigned to <strong>the</strong> Rainier N<strong>at</strong>ional Forest, G. F.<br />

Allen Superv<strong>is</strong>or. Here I iust pause to express my affection for th<strong>at</strong><br />

scholarly a.nd eacentric.. gentlemen. He had antici.tsd <strong>the</strong> transfer <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Foreet Reservea froia Interior to Agriculture and <strong>the</strong> rau].tant expansion<br />

so ha4 joined <strong>the</strong> Land Office aevera]. <strong>year</strong>s before th<strong>at</strong> change<br />

was affected. At th<strong>at</strong> tiae <strong>the</strong> Rainier extended from Stampede Pass to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Columbia River on both siopes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Casca4e Divide.<br />

Mr. Allen' s predecessor as superv<strong>is</strong>or <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Reserve was Dave<br />

Sheller, a loca.]. politico. Me turned over to Mr. Alien a half dozen<br />

rusty shovla a axes, stored in a. d.ap cellar <strong>of</strong> a. Tacoma Saloon,<br />

explaining <strong>the</strong>y were furn<strong>is</strong>hed for fire fighting purpo3es. The Reserve<br />

had no <strong>of</strong>fice, <strong>the</strong> correspondence was carried on from <strong>the</strong> Superv<strong>is</strong>or'8<br />

residence. Nei<strong>the</strong>r were <strong>the</strong>re ranger st<strong>at</strong>ion5 for razgers were eap].oyed<br />

only during summer ionths and. caiaped wherever <strong>the</strong>y happened t be.<br />

Mr. Allen took up residence <strong>at</strong> Buckley in t906 for living expenses<br />

were lees <strong>the</strong>re than <strong>at</strong> Tacoma. Sub$equently, he Moved to Yakiia, in<br />

1907, <strong>the</strong>n to Orting, (1908-It) where <strong>of</strong>fice space was rented in an old,<br />

stor. building. In 1911 it wa, aoved to <strong>the</strong> newly coap<strong>is</strong>ted Poit<strong>of</strong>fice<br />

Building in Tacoma.<br />

It reaind. <strong>the</strong>re until 1933 when <strong>the</strong> Rainier Forest was d<strong>is</strong>membered<br />

to enlarge <strong>the</strong> adjoining one6, which were aU sa1lr in area. The<br />

Yakiaa side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Naciee-Yakima Divide was aAded. to <strong>the</strong> Wen<strong>at</strong>chee unit.<br />

The Snoqua.laie unit took <strong>the</strong> rea.inEer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> east side and, <strong>the</strong> weet side<br />

to and. including <strong>the</strong> N<strong>is</strong>qua.11y and. Tilton drainages. The Coluabia irtharitod<br />

<strong>the</strong> Cowlitz and Cimpua areas. (Originally <strong>the</strong> Columbia had been a.<br />

portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Rainier and th<strong>at</strong> iiade a large territory to cover with poor<br />

traz<strong>is</strong>port<strong>at</strong>ioii. Field trips were <strong>of</strong> long dur<strong>at</strong>ion. For exaaple, Mr. Allen<br />

would, with hi5 horsee, boa.rd a river bo<strong>at</strong> <strong>at</strong> La Center to reach White<br />

Salmon and <strong>the</strong> Mt. Adaas region. An altern<strong>at</strong>e route was by trail out <strong>of</strong><br />

iakima).<br />

The Forest Superv<strong>is</strong>or was also Park Superintendent, ex <strong>of</strong>ficio, but<br />

<strong>th<strong>is</strong></strong> axrangeent termin<strong>at</strong>ed abruptly during <strong>the</strong> Baliinger-Pinchot incident.<br />

The S.creta.ry <strong>of</strong> Interior telegraphe& Mr. Allen to turn over <strong>the</strong><br />

recorda to a. succe<strong>is</strong>or and ass<strong>is</strong>t ttim in every way possib1 to becoae<br />

acquainted wtth th. intricacies <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> new <strong>of</strong>fice. Th.re wa. no 'ord<br />

<strong>of</strong> appreci<strong>at</strong>ion to Mr. Allen for p.rforaing <strong>th<strong>is</strong></strong> function for a decade.<br />

The Superv<strong>is</strong>or's salary was <strong>the</strong>n $18OO and. h<strong>is</strong> clerk's $1200 for a.dini<strong>at</strong>r*ting<br />

both Forest and Park. The new Park Superintendent's salary<br />

was set <strong>at</strong> $24i.00 with a clerk <strong>at</strong> $1,600. The ip.tus given to ore<strong>at</strong>e<br />

<strong>the</strong> Park wae furn1hed by <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Pacific Railway Coapany. In th<strong>at</strong><br />

way <strong>the</strong> Coapazl3r received lieu selection graztz for valuable tuber l<strong>at</strong>hs<br />

on Graye Marbon in p].a.c. <strong>of</strong> snow fiel&s and rock cliffs in <strong>the</strong> Parke<br />

When automobiles first began to co*e to <strong>the</strong> Park <strong>the</strong> regul<strong>at</strong>ions prohibited<br />

women from driving within it and cars were not allowed to move<br />

under <strong>the</strong>ir own power, after 6 PM. The penalty for viol<strong>at</strong>ing <strong>the</strong> l<strong>at</strong>ter<br />

was a $5 fine plus <strong>the</strong> expenae <strong>of</strong> towing <strong>the</strong> car out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Park with a<br />

teaa <strong>of</strong> hor8es. A pro.tnent citizen. Major Everett Griggs, viol<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>th<strong>is</strong></strong><br />

rule and was taken to task by a Park Guard, Williaa Se<strong>the</strong>. The incenaed<br />
