takenout the <strong>2021</strong>Bowls<br />
<strong>Canterbury</strong> championof<br />
champions final.<br />
The team defeated the<br />
defending champions Bowls<br />
Papanuiinthe final at the<br />
Belfast greenatthe weekend<br />
by 229.<br />
Woodend has previously<br />
won the event in 2019 and<br />
2012.<br />
For the secondtime,<br />
Woodend has qualified for<br />
the national champion of<br />
champion women’s fours<br />
finals, which will be held at<br />
Pukekohe in July.<br />
Croquet brings schools together<br />
CROQUET<br />
OuruhiaSchool was the winner of<br />
the third annual <strong>North</strong><strong>Canterbury</strong><br />
primaryschool’sGolf Croquet<br />
competition held in Rangioralast<br />
Saturday.<br />
Organised by HowardPettigrew in<br />
conjunction with the Rangiora<br />
CroquetClub, the tournament<br />
involved eight teamsofyear seven<br />
and eight pupilsfrom <strong>North</strong> Loburn,<br />
Loburn,Ashley and Ouruhia schools,<br />
who all played six games each before<br />
the winner was found.<br />
Ashley teacher John Lynskey, says<br />
the tournament was so popular, 18<br />
pupils initially showed an interest to<br />
make up the eight slots available.<br />
“Few of these kidshad much idea<br />
about the game,but avideo clip<br />
helped them understand it alittle<br />
more.<br />
‘‘We have progressedthe game at<br />
school with aplaying ladder. You<br />
don’t need to be the most athletic to<br />
participate and it is good team<br />
builder”.<br />
<strong>North</strong> LoburnpupilsMaddie<br />
Jones and HarryKendrick are very<br />
enthusiastic about the game.<br />
‘‘It is acool game, demands good<br />
skills and is alot of fun,’’ says<br />
Maddie.<br />
Harry likes the competitivenessof<br />
the game and to be able to play<br />
against his school mates.<br />

Mandeville’s Makayla Krahagen,<br />
aged 10, has had avery successful<br />
time at all of the <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong><br />
A&P Shows and beyond.<br />
Riding the Brechin Family's<br />
Eastdale Imogen, or Ivy as she is<br />
known, Makayla won the supreme<br />
champion pony awards at Cheviot,<br />
Hawarden, Malvern, Oxfordand<br />
Mackenzie Highland A&P shows.<br />
At the Oxford A&PShow the<br />
combination was also awarded the<br />
supremechampionanimal exhibit.<br />
Winningthe Supreme Champion<br />
Pony at each of the AutumnShows<br />
was ahuge thrill, particularly as its<br />
only the secondyear Makaylahas<br />
been riding. Her hard workand<br />
dedicationhas shown in their<br />
achievements.<br />
Makaylamet Ivy at ridinglesson<br />
at SwannanoabasedBrecland Park<br />
Equestrian, owned and run by Paul,<br />
Jo and Jessica Brechin. She fell in<br />
love with Ivy, and they havetrained<br />
hard and formed avery special<br />
partnership.<br />
Makayla’sdreams of winning the<br />
firstyear ridden pony and rider<br />
titles were shatteredwhen the New<br />
Zealand Horse of the Year Show in<br />
Hastingsws cancelled last mont,as<br />
she now moves into the open ring.<br />
The pair has qualified for next<br />
year’s Horse of the Year Show.<br />
