Opening day win for Saracens<br />

The bootofSaracens goal<br />

kicker Ricky Allin wasthe<br />

difference between defeatand<br />

victory in the season’sopener<br />

againstAshley in the <strong>North</strong><br />

<strong>Canterbury</strong> poolofthe<br />

combined countryrugby<br />

competitionlastSaturday.<br />

Saracens scored three<br />

converted tries, and apenalty,<br />

to give it a24­22win. Ashley<br />

scored four tries, but only one<br />

was converted.<br />

The game wasatypical,<br />

early season, scrappy affair,<br />

withbothteamsguilty of too<br />

many unforced errors. Not<br />

helping the errorrate was a<br />

strong easterlywindthat took<br />

holdofthe openspaces at<br />

Southbrook Park.<br />

Saracens,with the windat<br />

its backinfirst half, used it to<br />

its advantage. Afterkeeping<br />

the ball awayfromAshley for<br />

the first ten minutes, it scored<br />

firstwith apenalty,and the<br />

firstofits tries.<br />

When Ashleydid gain<br />

quality possessionitwas used<br />

wisely andfromanoverlap out<br />

wide, scored its first try froma<br />

launchingpad 30 metresout.<br />

Saracens did the attacking<br />

in thefinalmoments of the<br />

halfand after two<br />

unsuccessful attempts to cross<br />

the line, finally scored in<br />

injury timeand wenttothe<br />

break ahead17­5.<br />

Saracens scored first in the<br />

second half after Ashley were<br />

reduced to 14 players<br />

following an illegal tackle, and<br />

lookedtobeontracktoa<br />

comfortable win. However<br />

when itsfull complement was<br />

reinstated, Ashley, then<br />

dominated possession and<br />

territoryand beganafight<br />

back, led by its forwards that<br />

wentdown to the final whistle.<br />

Kaiapoi was slow out of the<br />

blocks in its game against Ohoka,<br />

finding itself down0­7after five<br />

minutes. It then gathered<br />

momentum and ran out 31­12<br />

victors.<br />

Playing into the wind in the first<br />

half, Kaiapoi was tested in all<br />

phases by asolid Ohoka unit.<br />

It however scored two tries in the<br />

spell, the second moments before<br />

half time. With Crusaders contract<br />

player Josh McKay joining the back<br />

line in the second spell, and with<br />

the wind at its back, Kaiapoisurged<br />

ahead scoring three unanswered<br />

tries while Ohoka was rewarded for<br />

agutsy defensive effort with atry of<br />

its own on full time.<br />

build up, Hurunui was made to<br />

work hard for its <strong>15</strong>­12 win against<br />

afired­up Woodend.<br />

Woodend lead 3­0 early in the<br />

game after Jordie Swain kicked the<br />

first of his three first half penalties.<br />

Hurunui fought back and scored a<br />

converted try leaving Woodend up<br />

9­7 atthe break. Amore<br />

experiencedHurunuiadded<br />

anothertry in the second half to a<br />

Woodend’s penalty and was<br />

relieved to come away with a<br />

victory.<br />

Glenmark­Cheviot v<br />

Oxford<br />

Glenmark­Cheviot continuedits<br />

winning way from the past two<br />

seasons, beating ahandy Oxford<br />

side 25­10. It was afitting start to the<br />

season to honour Matt Earl’s 100th<br />

cameplayingfor the Glenmark<br />

seniorside. Matt Jensen stood out<br />

in the Glenmark back line and<br />

Harry Wilding dominated its line<br />

out.<br />
