The club’swomen’s fours team of skip Jenny Anderson, Pauline Barr,Mary O’Brien and Joan Macfarlanehave takenout the 2021Bowls Canterbury championof champions final. The team defeated the defending champions Bowls Papanuiinthe final at the Belfast greenatthe weekend by 229. Woodend has previously won the event in 2019 and 2012. For the secondtime, Woodend has qualified for the national champion of champion women’s fours finals, which will be held at Pukekohe in July. Croquet brings schools together CROQUET OuruhiaSchool was the winner of the third annual NorthCanterbury primaryschool’sGolf Croquet competition held in Rangioralast Saturday. Organised by HowardPettigrew in conjunction with the Rangiora CroquetClub, the tournament involved eight teamsofyear seven and eight pupilsfrom North Loburn, Loburn,Ashley and Ouruhia schools, who all played six games each before the winner was found. Ashley teacher John Lynskey, says the tournament was so popular, 18 pupils initially showed an interest to make up the eight slots available. “Few of these kidshad much idea about the game,but avideo clip helped them understand it alittle more. ‘‘We have progressedthe game at school with aplaying ladder. You don’t need to be the most athletic to participate and it is good team builder”. North LoburnpupilsMaddie Jones and HarryKendrick are very enthusiastic about the game. ‘‘It is acool game, demands good skills and is alot of fun,’’ says Maddie. Riding the Brechin Family's Eastdale Imogen, or Ivy as she is known, Makayla won the supreme champion pony awards at Cheviot, Hawarden, Malvern, Oxfordand Mackenzie Highland A&P shows. At the Oxford A&PShow the combination was also awarded the supremechampionanimal exhibit. Winningthe Supreme Champion Pony at each of the AutumnShows was ahuge thrill, particularly as its only the secondyear Makaylahas been riding. Her hard workand dedicationhas shown in their achievements. Makaylamet Ivy at ridinglesson at SwannanoabasedBrecland Park Equestrian, owned and run by Paul, Jo and Jessica Brechin. She fell in love with Ivy, and they havetrained hard and formed avery special partnership. Makayla’sdreams of winning the firstyear ridden pony and rider titles were shatteredwhen the New Zealand Horse of the Year Show in Hastingsws cancelled last mont,as she now moves into the open ring. Saracens scored three converted tries, and apenalty, to give it a2422win. Ashley scored four tries, but only one was converted. The game wasatypical, early season, scrappy affair, withbothteamsguilty of too many unforced errors. Not helping the errorrate was a strong easterlywindthat took holdofthe openspaces at Southbrook Park. Saracens,with the windat its backinfirst half, used it to its advantage. Afterkeeping the ball awayfromAshley for the first ten minutes, it scored firstwith apenalty,and the firstofits tries. When Ashleydid gain quality possessionitwas used wisely andfromanoverlap out wide, scored its first try froma launchingpad 30 metresout. Saracens did the attacking in thefinalmoments of the halfand after two unsuccessful attempts to cross the line, finally scored in injury timeand wenttothe break ahead175. Saracens scored first in the second half after Ashley were reduced to 14 players following an illegal tackle, and lookedtobeontracktoa comfortable win. However when itsfull complement was reinstated, Ashley, then dominated possession and territoryand beganafight back, led by its forwards that wentdown to the final whistle. Woodend lead 30 early in the game after Jordie Swain kicked the first of his three first half penalties. Hurunui fought back and scored a converted try leaving Woodend up 97 atthe break.
