Be fire wise this winter, says FENZ
‘‘Firefighters don’t like fire
movies’’ is the slogan behind
Fireand Emergency New
Zealand’s (FENZ) latestfire
safety campaigncoming into
winter.
The message is simple ‘‘be
prepared’’, says FENZ’s North
Canterburybased fire risk
management officer Kerri
Pring.
‘‘Now is the time to get your
chimney’s swept before
lighting the fire for the first
timethis year. Get it done
before the cold snap arrives.’’
Daylightsavings came to an
end over the long Easter
Weekend, so if you haven’t
already, make sure you check
yoursmoke alarmsare still
working and if they are still
within the expiry date,Kerri
says.
‘‘Most smokealarms onlylast
between 8to10years.Fire and
Emergency New Zealand
recommends photoelectric 10
yearlife longsmoke alarms.
‘‘Wealso recommend
installing one in each bedroom
and livingareas.Smoke from a
house fire can killinless than
three minutes.’’
Kerri saysonethird of all
residentialfires attended by
FENZlast year did not have
smoke alarmsinstalled.
Researchhas shown that you
are four timesmore likely to
survive ahouse fireifyou have
working smoke alarms.
Matches, lightersand other
out of reach of children.
Lights are fitted with the
correct bulbsize and rating (in
watts) and alwayskeep atorch
emergencies.
In the kitchen, you should
For those who have an
electric blanket on yourbed,
now is agood time to do aquick
checktomake surethere are
‘‘These can cause electric
shocks, fire and even death, so
at the first sign of wearhave
your blanket checked and
electrician.’’
FENZ recommends
ventilation and air space
around the clothes dryer.
