Budgeting demand
By DAVID HILL
Budget services are in demand
as North Canterburyfamilies
continuetoface financial
pressuresdue to the ongoing
impacts of Covid19.
Budgeting ServicesNorth
Canterbury service manager
Sharon Grant saysdespitethe
extraassistance available, some
families have found themselves
worseoff one year on from the
lockdown.
Reduced hours and job losses
through business closuresand
redundancyled to many
household incomelevels
reducing significantly, she says.
‘‘This put much pressureon
people’s ability to meettheir
immediate and ongoingliving
costs.
‘‘While there was someextra
financial assistancemade
available through Work and
Income, not everyone was in a
position to accessthose funds,
or their situation was such that
they were already struggling
priortoCovid19, and for them
it was too little,too late.’’
Therehas been an increase in
the number of requests for
bankruptcies and debt
repayment orders, Ms Grant
says.
‘‘Thelevel of debt complexity
we are seeing has increased
considerably,and many people
are not reaching out for help
when they first start
experiencing debt repayment
difficulties.
The service can advocate on a
client’s behalf and perhaps
renegotiate better repayment
terms. But thiswas only ashort
term solutiontowhat is avery
complex situation.
During the lockdown, Work
and Incomeoffered extra
assistance, foodbanks stepped
up and somefinancial
institutions took ‘‘a more
lenient approach’’.
The various supportoptions
have now ceased, leaving some
families in an even worse
financial situation. Building
resiliencetofinancial hardship
is goingtobealong term
project, Ms Grant says.
