DEAR READER,
Last year, record numbers of people got on their bikes, and we’ve
been riding more than ever before. Many took a break over winter,
but with the first rays of sunshine, the bike paths are soon filling up
again. Watching all the people cycling is a dream come true, but it’s
also becoming increasingly clear: something has to change. During the
height of the Covid-19 pandemic, we saw how quickly bike lanes sprung
up in big cities – where there’s a will, there’s a (bike) way. Politicians
were crucial in pushing through new bike infrastructure, and we have
to continue with the same determination. We need more bike lanes and
better infrastructure that’s safe for everyone using the roads.
But it’s not just politicians who can take action to ensure the cycling
boom continues and new people start riding. We can all do our bit!
Riding thoughtfully helps us make the most out of crowded bike lanes.
An encouraging wave on a steep hill can help someone reach the top.
A spare tube or puncture repair kit can save the weekend ride of a
stranger in need.
We can all contribute in our own small ways to this new era of cycling,
whether it’s for fun, for our health or just to make cycling a normal
means of transport. Our new motto is: there’s no better time to ride
your bike!
