Reasons You Should Fix A Leak
In Your Roof Immediately
Maintaining your home is a mammoth task that
requires your attention and time. We tend to
overlook certain things, such as a dent in the
closet or a leaking tap. But, when it comes to a
leak in the roof, it is hard to ignore as it causes
great inconvenience. At Silverline Roofing, we are
residential roofers and we provide expert roofing
services in Edmonton. Our services include
residential roofing, skylight installation,
reroofing, roof inspections and roof repair.
Four Reasons Why You Need Roof Repair
Here’s why you need to fix your roof:
1. Ignored repairs tend to be expensive
If your roofing structure is getting weaker by the
day due to water exposure and you are avoiding
roof inspection and repair, the damage will get
worse and you will have to invest a lot in the
future in roof repair. It’s advisable that you get it
done in due time to avoid future expenses.
2. Increase in power consumption
A leaky roof has the potential to destroy the
insulation in your attic. Wet insulation materials
take a long time to dry out, which in turn reduces
the resistance to temperature change. This will
lead to heat loss, and you will see the effect in
your electricity bills.
3. Corrosion of materials
Roof leakage causes damage to wall frames and
ceiling joints. Exposure to moisture breaks wood
down and it begins to rot. With time, this might
even cause the frame of the roof to weaken so
much that it collapses. Water flows downwards;
hence, this not only affects the roof but also the
foundation of the house.
4. Mould formation
As wet wood rots, there is fungal growth on them
that cannot be avoided for long. Mould is a
fungus that can speed up the wood rotting
process and also cause health issues. To avoid
respiratory problems and prevent your roof from
falling, repairing it on time is the best alternative.

Neglecting Privacy in the Master Bedroom
Mistakes You Want to Avoid
When Building a House
There are countless benefits to building a custom
home, most notably that you get to control all of
the details. However, if you are inexperienced in
this area, you may fall into a number of common
mistakes. When building a house, watch out for
these common pitfalls in the planning process to
give yourself the best chance of being completely
satisfied with the results. Call us today for a free
estimate.
Underestimating the Costs Involved
This is one of the most common mistakes people
make when building a house. Many people begin
a custom home project with lofty goals and
premium fixtures in mind, only to discover that
seemingly small costs can seriously add up over
the course of the project. Be realistic with yourself
about what you truly need and what you can only
add if there is room left in your budget. Don’t
forget to include a cushion in your budget to allow
for last-minute changes to your plans.
Inconvenient Kitchen Placement
Your kitchen will undoubtedly be one of the
most-used rooms in your home, so you’ll want it
to be centrally located for easy access. It is also a
good idea to place your kitchen near your main
entry point, whether that is the front door or the
garage. This will make your life much easier when
bringing in groceries and taking out the garbage.
Make sure your kitchen is close to the dining room
and main living area as well, especially if you like
to entertain.
To ensure you are able to get the best possible
sleep, you’ll want to arrange your master bedroom
in a quiet area of the house. This means placing it
away from the main living area. You don’t want to
be sharing a wall with others who are awake when
you are trying to sleep. Don’t place your master
bedroom over the garage either, as others coming
and going at early or late hours could cause
disruption.
Too Much Storage Space
Having plenty of storage space is great for keeping
your house clutter-free, but it is possible to go
overboard when building a house. Keep in mind
that the more closet and storage space you
include, the less living space you will have left
over. Think carefully about your priorities to
determine whether a huge walk-in closet is more
important to you than having a spacious,
comfortable bedroom. Aim for a balance between
the two.
Wasting Unused Rooms
As you make your plans for building a house, it
can be tempting to create rooms for everything
you might want to do in the future. For example, a
large guest suite might be a great idea if you have
loved ones stay overnight frequently, but if you
only host guests a few times a year, that room will
go unused most of the time. The space might be
better put to use as a home office or gym. Think
about how you will actually use the rooms and try
to make them do double-duty when possible to
maximize usage.

5. Update your business income
Did you land a new contract, change your service
offer or hire new employees? Your revenue will
probably increase, too. Be sure to tell your insurer!
6. See if your neighbourhood has changed
If local businesses change direction or close up shop,
your business might be exposed to more risk. Be sure
to let your insurer know.
BUSINESS INSURANCE
10 steps to reviewing your business insurance
Anything from a crisis, recession or difficult weather
conditions can result in changes to your business.
If you want to avoid unpleasant surprises in the
event of a claim, your business insurance coverages
should reflect your current situation.
After any business changes, we recommend you
make sure you still have the right coverage. Here are
10 steps to help you do that.
1. Review your business activities
If you’ve added new products or services, like online
sales, you might need extra coverage. Notify your
insurer of any changes that affect your operations.
2. Assess the value of your business assets
Have you acquired any new business assets to
support your operations? Calculate the value of
furniture, telephone or computer systems, tools and
other equipment related to your business sector, and
check if you still have enough business insurance
coverages.
3. Take a look at your inventory
Launching a new product can increase your
inventory. Do you still have enough coverages? Your
business insurance should reflect your situation.
4. Review your service offer
Some specialized fields involve higher risks. When
hiring employees to perform new tasks, you may
want to add business insurance coverages or
increase the amount of your existing coverages.
7. Update your service area
If your organization now does business or online
sales outside your province or even outside Canada,
it might be a good idea to enhance your business
insurance coverages to reflect the change.
8. Document all the changes to your building
Doing renovations to the building where your
business is located, whether by expanding or
improving the facilities, could affect its
reconstruction value. Document the changes and
send them to your insurer to keep your file up to date
and have your amount of coverage re-evaluated.
9. Update your list of security systems
There are many ways to prevent your place of
business from being broken into. You may have
installed an alarm system or surveillance cameras to
protect your business when it’s vacant. Don’t forget
to tell your insurer.
10. Talk to your agent
Are you buying a vehicle so you can offer a new
service? Are you offering a new service with one of
your existing vehicles? You might have to update
your business insurance policy.
Your insurance agent can advise you on what steps to
take after a change so you can make sure you have
the right coverages and avoid a lot of problems in the
event of a claim! Don’t wait until it’s time to renew
your business insurance to let your insurer know
you’re doing renovations to your building, buying
new assets or expanding your operations, for
example.
If you have any questions about your insurance
coverages, contact Desjardins Insurance. Our
Desjardins Agents are available and ready to help.

Now that we are in spring and you have had a
chance to walk around your house to see what
needs to be done to get it in ship shape condition
for the warmer weather, you might have noticed a
crack in the bricks on the side of one of your walls.
Perhaps the bricks are separating. If so and you have
experienced rain and moisture, it’s possible the
moisture will infiltrate the wall and cause some
internal damage to the mortar points. If the brick
face is flaking off this is a sign too that water is
getting behind the brick.
This is where point work or tuck-pointing comes in.
This is the process where skilled professionals will
come in and inspect your walls. If the condition is
not so obvious to the naked eye, there is technology
that can determine whether there is any damage to
the mortar.
The p The process involves very carefully removing and
cleaning out the old and damaged mortar so as not
to compromise the integrity of the brick and
surrounding mortar. This is either done by hand
chiseling each brick to a depth of 1 inch, or by using
an electric grinder. These grinders however cannot
be used on vertical joints, as they will chip or crack
the bricks.
It is important to match the mortar with your
original mortar. Any difference in tone and strength
will create stress on existing mortar and bricks. For
example in older homes, lime-based mortar might
have been used to tuckpoint the bricks, whose
porous supple nature allows for expansion and
contraction of the bricks. Newer homes most likely
will be pointed with masonry cement which is a
combination of sand and ground limestone – a
harder substitute mixed together with Portland
cement.
Once the area is thoroughly cleaned and prepared,
the new mortar can be applied.
Point work, or re pointing or tuck work should be
done every 25 years or so. It is important to regularly
check outside walls to ensure the mortar is still in
tact and strong.Tuck-pointing is an expensive and
painstaking process, and the advice would be to
make sure you are getting the best and most
professional workmanship to complete the job.

THREE WAYS YOU’RE RISKING YOUR BUSINESS IN 2021
It’s been many months of lockdowns and
restrictions, and the strain is showing everywhere.
And unless your business operates on one of the
rare models that benefit from a pandemic, you are
probably growing a little weary of hanging on.
With more virulent COVID-19 strains slipping into
our communities while vaccine delivery hits new
barriers and case numbers continue to rise, most
of us are looking forward with a fluctuating mix of
optimism and concern. It is becoming clear,
despite what anyone wants, that the real recovery
is many months away.
That means as entrepreneurs and business
leaders, we are still miles away from predictable
times. And what’s worse is that many are
operating in ways that drive up, rather than
minimize, their future risk.
Here are three risk factors I’m seeing daily, and
actions to turn each one around.
Sticking Your Head in the Sand. The single
biggest contributor to bad debt writeoffs is
procrastination. Even during good times, by the
time an account is flagged as a true problem, it
can often be beyond recovery. During a financial
crisis like this, 60 is the new 90. Tighten, rather
than loosen your standard timeframes to be
ahead of the pack when an account is struggling
to pay. It’s important to perceive recovering debt
as a race against other creditors, where anyone
but the winners will miss out big-time. Clients
who send us overdue accounts promptly are
seeing dramatically faster results and a high rate
of of success than those who wait. Get your head
out of the sand and back into the game!
The Sunk-Cost Mentality. Experts in behavioural
economics remind us that humans have a
foolhardy but hardwired inclination to languish
on prior efforts and expenses, despite that we
would be far wiser to invest our energy in creating
future successes than on trying to extract value
from the past. When you send an account to your
collection agency, you can achieve the best of
both worlds—maximizing your Net Back while
returning your mental focus to the skills and
expertise that create future value.
Failure to Evolve. Many businesses that are
already recovering from a significant impact are
succeeding through reinvention. Meanwhile, those
struggling the most are the ones with a “wait with
fingers crossed” recovery strategy, merely hoping
things return to the way they were before the
economy went into the dumpster. News flash: the
world is different, and the future will in many ways
never resemble the past. The best time to find a
place for your business in this new normal was a
year ago. The second best time is now.
If your business is putting off dealing with cash flow
issues, focused on sunk costs or if your recovery
plan is heavily reliant on bygone strategies, you
urgently need to make changes.
There’s an exciting new future ahead, and you want
to be part of it. My team and I can help. Remember,
you can submit overdue accounts for collection day

Wine Coolers
Watch any of the home renovation series on
television and you notice that more and more
kitchens are being outfitted with the small,
unobtrusive and useful addition of a wine cooler.
Depending on the space in your kitchen and what
your renovation plans will include, you could either
choose a cooler that fits comfortably under the
countertop as a built-in, a countertop unit, or a
stand-alone upright cabinet.
Wine coolers and cabinets range in price and size;
from just over $150 to $2,000 for 18 to anywhere up
to 50 bottles- whatever your pocket and preference.
The midrange coolers are 4.0 cu.ft.and space
enough for 38 bottles, and larger units come as 5.3
cu.ft. for 50 bottles.Built-in units typically have a
depth of 61cm or 24” and will fit in the space of the
standard kitchen cabinet for a streamlined built-in
look. Larger freestanding upright cabinets come
with either a single or double door.
Dual cooler zone fridges have separate cooling
chambers, which can be set at different
temperatures, allowing you to store a variety ofred
and white wines comfortably at their own optimal
temperatures. Some coolers feature removable
stainless steel wine racks so you can customize your
cellar, and also equipped with soft built-in lighting.
If you have room in your basement or a particular
space to house a greater collection – then you
might consider the modular wine cellars, which are
less expensive than the custom built wine cellars.
Whether you have a select collection of your
favourite wines, or you are a seasoned connoisseur,
you know how important it is to preserve the
flavour and texture of your wines. Would a built-in,
countertop or freestanding wine cooler work for
you in your kitchen? Your decision! There certainly
is a variety to choose from.
Countertop Wine coolers have space enough for 17
bottles and additional storage for accessories.

How To Choose the Right Exterior Siding for
Your Edmonton Home
As you research exterior siding for your home,
you will notice there are a number of different
products available for your Edmonton home.
Making sure that you have the right siding for
your home’s needs is integral. Not only can you
upgrade the curb appeal, but you can make sure
your home is protected against the harshest
winters that the Edmonton area has to offer. So,
what should you consider when looking for the
right exterior siding for your home?
Energy Efficient
A sidings energy efficiency rating is based on its
R-value. The R-value will differ from building
material to building material. Vinyl exterior siding
is designed to be affordable, easy to install, and
energy efficient. Wood siding is one of the higher
rated energy efficient home sidings. It is not the
most cost-effective and it does require ongoing
maintenance, but it does have one of the best
R-values.
Durability
Metal siding is by far your most durable,
weather resistant exterior siding. This type of
siding also helps to keep your home cool in the
summer months, as it deflects the sun’s heat and
does not retain any heat. Although, this home is
the most durable and can be the most energy
efficient, it does carry one of the higher price tags.
Vinyl siding is also one of the more durable siding
choices and can last for years and years with
proper maintenance and care.
Versatility
Most exterior siding is versatile for your home’s
needs. Both wood and vinyl siding can be painted
to suit your aesthetic desires. Metal siding’s
versatility comes from its ability to keep your
home safe from the elements, termites, and
maintains its finish.
Whichever exterior siding you choose for your
home, there will be pros and cons to any building
material. The outside of your home is just as
important as the inside of your home, so knowing
your options is an integral part of choosing the
right siding. Understanding the different benefits
of each type of siding is the right step in
determining how to pick the perfect siding to suit
your needs.

When you know the weather is favourable, you
can finally get to your deck-restaining project.
Follow all the steps in an orderly fashion for a
beautiful long-lasting finish of your deck.
Old discoloured decks are ingrained with dirt,
mildew and stains from exposure to the elements
– even new wood needs to be cleaned. Oxygen
bleach wood cleaners are the best choice and safe
for your plants and yourself.
Stain strippers are used for more stubborn stains.
Follow the instructions for use, as stain strippers
are more caustic. Sanding by hand for really
hard-to-remove stains is advisable.
Wood brighteners are easy to apply and well worth
the additional time and effort -opening the wood
for greater absorbency, and restoring a new look.
After the spray application, rinse the deck very
well to remove all cleaning chemicals from the
wood. Your clean, dry deck is now ready for a good
quality stain.
Water-based stains are more durable and
longer-lasting than oil-based stains. They clean
well with soap and water. Drying more quickly
than solvents, they are environment friendly -less
susceptible to mould and mildew.
Read the instructions carefully: how many coats to
apply; the wait time between coats; wait time after
cleaning and length of time to allow the wood to
weather. Natural stains show the grain, allow the
wood to breathe and clean easily. Too many layers
will peel and create a mess.
Apply with either a pump-up garden sprayer or a
roller. Keep a paintbrush handy to fill in while still
wet for deeper penetration of the wood.
well to remove all cleaning chemicals from the

quality stain.

Healthy Travel
When visiting new destinations around the world,
travelers are often exposed to many hazards.
They don’t just come from environmental threats,
rather, some of the biggest problems are invisible
to the human eye.
When preparing for a trip, travelers need to make
sure their planning lists include personal wellness
items and good safety habits. Here are five easy
healthy travel tips everyone can follow.
1. Always opt for Bottled Water
2. Utilize Hand Sanitizer at all Turns
3. Use a Bug Repellent With DEET or Icaridin
4. Use Sunscreen While Outdoors
5. Get Plenty of Rest Between Adventures
This is one of the biggest vacation safety tips.
Instead of waiting around for a couple of months to
get a new passport or other documents, using
scanned copies can also provide you with a way to
have the proper ID while out and about. Keeping
scanned copies in cloud storage is a great way to
have access to them, no matter where you are..
Separate your cash and cards
It’s important to stay safe with travel safety tips no
matter where you are heading around the world.
Not only is exploring a new area intimidating, but it
can also mean that you’re not used to your
surroundings. Whether you’re on a trip to work as a
volunteer or you are a student or even if you are
just taking an extended vacation, being smart
about where you go and who you trust while
traveling, you can have an all-around good time.
Instead of keeping everything in one area, place
some cash in your suitcase, in your wallet and in
another safe place. Additionally, spread your cards
around evenly to the same areas. This ensures that
you always have your cash on hand, no matter
what happens.

be exposed to food and other consumables on a
daily basis. Quartz is non-porous, which means it
is easier to keep clean and more resistant to
bacteria. Granite can absorb food-borne
pathogens and the small fissures and spaces can
easily harbour bacteria.
QUARTZ VS. GRANITE: WHICH
ONE IS BEST FOR YOUR KITCHEN
COUNTERTOP?
Remodeling your kitchen is exciting, but also
presents you with a variety of difficult choices.
After all, the choice you make is one you will have
to live with for quite some time. One choice that
homeowners find very challenging is that of
selecting the right material for kitchen
countertops. The two choices that often compete
very closely are quartz and granite.
DECIDING BETWEEN QUARTZ AND GRANITE
COUNTERTOPS
You know both countertop materials are
attractive, and you may have even found colours
and styles you like that suit the overall design of
your kitchen, but you still need to decide between
the two. Granite is quarried directly from the earth
in a large single chunk. It is a natural stone that
can be cut into slabs later. Quartz, on the other
hand, is crushed and mixed with resin at the ratio
of 93 percent quartz to seven percent resin. It is
then manufactured to create a variety of colours
and patterns.
To compare these two stone surfaces adequately,
you need to consider the following:
Aesthetics – Both countertop types are attractive
and it is personal preference as to which looks
better in your kitchen. Engineered stones can
sometimes have more consistent patterns, while
with granite the material is formed naturally and
may show more variations in the surface.
Cost – Every home improvement project has a
budget. Granite has become more affordable over
the past few years and the prices are remaining
consistent. Quartz prices can vary, costing more
than granite at times or less. When it comes to the
overall care costs, quartz will ultimately cost less
than granite in the long run.
The best way to decide which countertop surface
is right for your kitchen is to visit a showroom and
see the varieties and colours in person for
yourself. PF Custom Countertops invites you to
see our showroom and see our quartz and granite
countertops for Sherwood Park, St. Alberta and
Edmonton residents in person.
PF Custom Countertops carries the largest
selection of laminate countertops in Edmonton.
Come to our showroom and see our extensive
selection of colours, style and finishes that mimic
real stone, but made from affordable, beautiful
laminate. We carry Formica®, Wilsonart® and all
of the major laminate brands in our lineup.
10417 174 ST.
780.484.0831
Stain Resistance – Quartz is one of the only stone
surfaces that is stain resistant and does not
require sealing to be resistant. It repels wine, oil,
coffee and even makeup spills with ease. Granite,
on the other hand, is porous and can stain,
especially if it is not sealed properly and regularly
according to manufacturer’s instructions.
Safety – Your kitchen countertops will obviously

Your Medicine Cabinet
Just as spring is a good time to de-clutter
rooms, cupboards and other areas in your
home – so too is the fall. A time for making sure
it’s air tight, organized, warm and dry. Heavier
clothing makes its appearance as the leaves
turn colour. One cupboard that probably gets
overlooked regardless of season is the
medication cabinet in the bathroom.
Why’s it important to regularly review the
medicine cabinet?
Medicine, topical ointments and such items
have an expiry date. Pharmacists will tell you
expiry dates are typically only effective whilst
the product is unopened. In addition: product
shelf life is compromised in unhealthy moist
conditions where bacteria and mold can thrive.
Clean your shelves and check each product.
Collect expired and spoiled medications to take
to your pharmacist who will safely discard
them. Do not discard medication down the
toilet or into the garbage. Ask your pharmacist
about the efficacy of your equipment, such as a
blood pressure monitor. You may need an
upgrade.
Take stock of important items in case of an
emergency and replace them with a fresh
supply.
Ideally, medicines – prescriptions and
over-the-counter aids should be stored and
packaged in airtight containers outside of the
bathroom. Find a safe dry cupboard for these.
Carefully assess which products to move.
When it comes to medication and your
families health – be diligent!

that passes through your house during the summer.
Many people are surprised to learn that metal
roofing is actually more cost-effective than many
other types of roofing products. Since metal doesn’t
need to be replaced very often, you will save
thousands of dollars over the life of your roof. If you
were to use other materials, such as asphalt, you
would have to replace the roof every few years to
maintain it. Since the new trend in residential
roofing is to use metal, you don’t have to worry
about doing that.
If you decide to use residential metal roofing, you
have several different options. You can buy
prefabricated kits that will come with everything
that you need, or you can build the entire roof by
using different types of materials. Most kits are
designed so that you can build a simple roof on your
own. There are also different kits available for
industrial or commercial applications, depending
on what you want to achieve.
The main benefit of residential metal roofing is that
it provides more protection to your home from the
elements. It is designed to last longer than
traditional asphalt shingles. If you live in an area
that is often pelted by snow and ice, the metal roof
will be able to keep the heat in your house where it
belongs, which can be really cold at times. Another
benefit is that this type of roofing product is easier
to install than other types of roofing products. Since
they are lighter weight and made out of stronger
material, they are also more appealing and easier to
look at.
Disadvantages of Residential Metal Roofing
As the full installation of metal roofing is a costly
option, most homeowners can not afford it.
Metal roofing can cause more noise during a
hailstorm or heavy rain than other roofing materials.
Because of poor installation or repair of roofing
systems, when the roof clogged up with water, it can
cause damage.
When you check for new trends in residential metal
roofing, and the advantages and disadvantages of
metal roofing, a metal roofing system will be the
best option for you. Metal roofing is an eye-catching
and functionally effective system for a residential
home.

The New Trend in Residential Metal Roofing 2021
Recent news articles have brought about a new
trend in residential metal roofing. These roofs are
becoming more popular because they are
environmentally friendly, and they are also more
cost-efficient. This article will explain how
residential metal roofing is such a new trend, and
why these roofs are better than their traditional
asphalt counterparts. Read more about metal
roofing in the article that will also enlighten you on
some of the benefits of metal roofing.
Metal roofing
This new trend in roofing is actually quite a few
years old. However, it just recently came to the
attention of the public that roofing made from metal
actually has some merit when it comes to durability.
Although they started out as a novelty, the use of
metal roofing in commercial applications is growing
steadily. Metal roofing companies are beginning to
advertise in the media and on the internet that they
have residential metal roofing as an available
option.
How do these new trends in residential roofing
work?
Advantages of Residential Metal Roofing
The advantages of this type of roofing system are
easy to see. First of all, they are more durable than
asphalt shingles. They are also fire resistant, which is
important if you live in an area that is prone to fires.
Metal roofing does not mildew and corrodes as
asphalt shingles do, so they are also an
environmentally responsible choice. If you are
concerned about saving money, this type of roofing
is also much more efficient than asphalt shingles.
The cost of installing this type of roof is also usually
less than asphalt shingles.
Another popular new trend in residential metal
roofing is to use metal as the primary material in the
roof. This means that you could choose to use tiles
or metal roof panels to form the roof of your home.
You do have the option of using different materials
for the roof, but if you want to conserve energy and
save money on your heating and cooling bills, then
this may be the best option for you. By using metal
roofing, you can be sure that you will save money on
your energy bill because metal lasts longer than
traditional materials such as wood or asphalt. If you
have a lot of hot weather, you can use multiple
layers of metal to help reduce the amount of heat

that passes through your house during the summer.
Many people are surprised to learn that metal
roofing is actually more cost-effective than many
other types of roofing products. Since metal doesn’t
need to be replaced very often, you will save
thousands of dollars over the life of your roof. If you
were to use other materials, such as asphalt, you
would have to replace the roof every few years to
maintain it. Since the new trend in residential
roofing is to use metal, you don’t have to worry
about doing that.
If you decide to use residential metal roofing, you
have several different options. You can buy
prefabricated kits that will come with everything
that you need, or you can build the entire roof by
using different types of materials. Most kits are
designed so that you can build a simple roof on your
own. There are also different kits available for
industrial or commercial applications, depending
on what you want to achieve.
