Rowers out on the water for the long haul<br />

Bridge Cure Long Distance Rowing Race<br />

stole theshow by winning the historic<br />

head race.<br />

The AvonRowing Club’s Dusty Lads<br />

were tardywith their entry, but madeup<br />

for it on thewater by winningthe event<br />

and taking time honours, finishingthe<br />

10km race in 36 minutes.<br />

The racewas staged by the CureBoating<br />

Club last Sunday morning, with the start<br />

and finish on the Kaiapoi Riveralongside<br />

the club’s headquarters in Raven Quay.<br />

Competitors rowedupthe Kaiapoi<br />

River to the Waimakariri River, up to<br />

Stewarts Gully,back down to the<br />

Waimakariri Yacht Club and then<br />

returned to the club for the finish.<br />

umpirePeterMidgleysaid it was<br />

unusualfor the winner of ahead race<br />

(with boatsstarting at set intervals) to also<br />

take time honours.<br />

Thirty coxed rowing crews and 160<br />

rowers took part. Many inspected the<br />

club’s almost­complete new clubrooms.<br />

Memberswill be abletomove in soon,but<br />

more funds are neededfor the fitout.<br />
