Council explores<br />

housing needs<br />

Neville andthe MidnightBlues Band at<br />

theirRangioraconcert.<br />

The concert will be held in the<br />

Rangiora Town Hall on Saturday,June<br />

19. It will be the first timethe young<br />

drummer has performed at the venue.<br />

Shae,a<strong>13</strong>­year­old RangioraHigh<br />

School pupil, said her three­piece band,<br />

which includes her father, Stu, on<br />

electric guitar, got the opportunity to be<br />

the support act at Ryan’s concert<br />

because her father knowsthe<br />

Christchurch­based entertainer.<br />

‘‘Ryanwas one of Dad’s guitar<br />

teachers yearsago and we went and saw<br />

him play and got talking to him,’’Shae<br />

said.<br />

‘‘We sent him afew clips of us playing<br />

and hismanagement liked them and said<br />

we couldplay at the Rangiora concert.<br />

‘‘Itisabig opportunityfor me to share<br />

the music we make withother peoplein<br />

abig venuewith cool sound gear. It will<br />

be the firsttime my drumswill be miked<br />

up.’’<br />

Shaehas beenplayingthe drums since<br />

she wasthree and hopestobecome a<br />

professional musician.<br />

‘‘I have been thinking aboutgoingto<br />

jazzschool whenIfinishhighschool and<br />

would like to make music for ajob, in a<br />

bandorasasession musician.’’<br />

The Waimakariri District Council will<br />

considerhow it can bestsupportthe district’s<br />

social and affordablehousing needs.<br />

Councillorsvoted at lastweek’s council<br />

meeting to support the establishment of a<br />

housing working group.<br />

<strong>May</strong>orDan Gordonwelcomed the decision,<br />

whichfollows ahousing needs assessment<br />

report commissioned by the councillastyear.<br />

The reporthighlighted aprojected growth<br />

in olderhouseholds generally, aneed to assist<br />

renters because of ashortageofrental<br />

properties, and alack of affordable housing.<br />

The Greater Christchurch Partnership also<br />

commissionedasocial and affordablehousing<br />

report last year which explored arange of<br />

actions thatcouncils can consider to stimulate<br />

housing provision in their districts.<br />

Abudgetofabout $3 million is already set<br />

asidetoinvest in housing,asthe council<br />

secured funding from the Rata Foundation<br />

some years ago for social housingtosupport<br />

firsthome buyers.This becamesurplus to<br />

requirementsatthe time and was sold, Mr<br />

Gordon says.<br />

‘‘We willbelooking at ourcurrentneeds,<br />

who we can partner with,and look at where<br />

that resource would be best placed.<br />

‘‘Some workhas alreadybeendone by the<br />

community team and our property team,soit’s<br />

amatter of pullingall thatinformation<br />

together.’’<br />

Housing for peoplewith disabilities to<br />

provide independent living backed up by<br />

specialised carewas one option, he says.<br />

The council has aportfolio of 112 pensioner<br />

unitstohelp meet the housingneeds of senior<br />

citizens on modest incomes.<br />

The housing workinggroup is expectedto<br />

provide an interim report within six months,<br />

with its ongoing role to be reviewednext year.<br />
