Kaiapoi beats Glenmark-Cheviot<br />

Glenmark­Cheviot’s golden run of<br />

rugby wins is over, after its senior side<br />

was undone by askilful and<br />

determined Kaiapoi outfit.<br />

It was June 2018 —nearly three<br />

years ago —when Glenmark­Cheviot<br />

last tasted defeat in aclub match.<br />

But last Saturday it was convincingly<br />

outplayed by aKaiapoi squad that won<br />

by 20­<strong>13</strong> in the Luisetti Seeds<br />

Combined Senior Competition.<br />

In doing so, Kaiapoi lifted the<br />

coveted Deans Shield.<br />

Glenmark­Cheviot now faces the<br />

possibility of failing to qualify for the<br />

championship round of the combined<br />

competition.<br />

All eyes will be on the side’s match<br />

against the unbeaten Saracens team, to<br />

be played at Cheviot this Saturday, as<br />

part of that club’s jubilee celebrations.<br />

The scrummaging effort by Kaiapoi<br />

and its depth of front­row stocks<br />

proved abig factor in its win.<br />

Glenmark­Cheviot lost two of its<br />

front rowers, and it was from that point<br />

that Kaiapoi took control at scrum<br />

time.<br />

Spectators witnessed the rare sight<br />

of the Glenmark­Cheviot pack going<br />

backwards, at times being completely<br />

demolished.<br />

But Glenmark­Cheviot showed<br />

enough resilience to twice draw level,<br />

and at no stage during the match did<br />

Kaiapoi’s lead extend beyond seven<br />

points.<br />

There was much relief among the<br />

Kaiapoi faithful, who attended in<br />

good numbers, when the final whistle<br />

blew.<br />

New bus service impresses councillors<br />

The new park­and­ride bus<br />

service is proving to be a<br />

success.<br />

Discussing the service at<br />

last week’s Waimakariri<br />

District Council meeting,<br />

several councillors said they<br />

were impressed with the<br />

service.<br />

figures indicate patronage<br />

from Rangiora has been<br />

particularly strong.<br />

‘‘From personal<br />

experience, it’s going very<br />

well, and anecdotally it<br />

seems to be well used,’’<br />

<strong>May</strong>or Dan Gordon said.<br />

He often uses the service<br />

to commute to meetings in<br />

the city.<br />

Deputy <strong>May</strong>or Neville<br />

Atkinson echoed the mayor’s<br />

comments.<br />

‘‘Personally, this seems to<br />

be working well. The mayor,<br />

myself and Cr Niki Mealings<br />

have used these services to<br />

get into Christchurch and we<br />

can see with the number of<br />

cars parked, and the bikes,<br />

that it is being used.’’<br />

public transport general<br />

manager Stewart Gibbon<br />

says patronage on both the<br />

Rangiora and Kaiapoi<br />

services continues to<br />

increase.<br />

As at March <strong>2021</strong>,<br />

patronage from Rangiora on<br />

the 91 city direct service was<br />

averaging 168 passengers a<br />

week, while Kaiapoi’s 92<br />

service was averaging 76 a<br />

week.<br />

‘‘It’s important to note that<br />

the Waimakariri direct<br />

services are new, only<br />

beginning in January of this<br />

year,’’ Mr Gibbon says.<br />

‘‘The progressive increase<br />

in usage and engagement so<br />

far is encouraging but it is<br />

early days.<br />

‘‘We will be continuing to<br />

monitor the service and<br />

engage with the community<br />

to support wider awareness<br />

and exposure to the service<br />

offering and benefits,’’ he<br />

says.<br />
