Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s 

excellent dining establishments. Everything is totally different 

on the food landscape these days, but in the interests of 

the public, we are still venturing out there and enjoying the 

victuals provided by local eateries. 

The place: Beach Plum Bakery and Café on Perry Street. It’s connected 

to West End Garage and right across from Wilbraham Park. 

We took the “Where We’re Snacking” route this week for a quick bite. 

The barista: Cassidy has been at Beach Plum Bakery for over two 

years and is heading into her third summer. She started as a baker 

and has since moved to the front as head barista. She told us how baking 

was just a hobby and she’s thrilled it turned into a job. Cassidy 

loves working there, especially because it coincides with her coffee 

addiction — something Kayla and Nicole can relate to. She was super 

knowledgeable and helpful when we couldn’t decide on what item we 

wanted — there were so many sweets to choose from. 

The vibe: It was a sunny afternoon and Kayla and Nicole were in 

the mood for a snack and in desperate need of a second coffee. We 

were lucky to grab a spot at a small table outside to enjoy it. It was in 

the high 60s and a perfect opportunity to people watch — plenty of 

bikers, small groups wandering the streets in search of something to 

do and tons of cars heading into town for the weekend. In the midst 

of it all, we also enjoyed a quick chat with Doug Marandino of Cape 

May Honey Farm — he pulled up to drop off some things to West End 

Garage. We were thrilled to get some fresh air and eat on location 

rather than at our desks after a long year full of takeout. 

The snacks: Before arriving, Kayla and Nicole had their sights set 

on their draft coffee. They each enjoyed a Black and Tan — cold brew 

mixed with their draft latte over ice which never disappoints. After 

some thinking, Kayla opted for the banana chocolate chip bread while 

Nicole enjoyed a pumpkin muffin with cream cheese icing. Everything 

was fresh and tender — definitely somewhere they plan to return. 

The takeaway: Beach Plum Bakery and Café is open Friday 

through Monday from 8 to 2. All their items are baked fresh daily with 

new items popping up through the week — it’s a great spot for your 

sweet tooth. And, if you love baking, they are hiring!

sometimes. Or all the time. Unless 

you’re indoors, then definitely wear 

your mask. Unless you’re fully vaccinated, then 

definitely remove your mask. Unless you’re in a 

non-mask mandate state, then definitely take 

off your mask. Unless you’re in New Jersey, 

then definitely sometimes wear your mask. 

See, this is why the government should never 

be in charge of anything. Honestly, Chick- 

Fil-A should’ve just run this whole thing from 

the beginning. 

Now that I’m on my full-time singing 

schedule, I won’t be waiting tables at Exit Zero 

Filling Station until the fall, which means I’m 

missing out on meeting all the new incoming 

summer staff. So Friday night I introduced 

myself to Caiti Dix, who seems like a perfectly 

nice and normal person, which is why I was so 

shocked to learn she’s Sandra Debenderfer’s 

daughter. With that bloodline, you just know 

she has to be a little weird.... (I will copy 

and paste Sandra’s proportional Facebook 

response in next week’s column.) 

EZFS Customer of the Week: During our 

TNT gigs, Tim Joyce and I often banter with the 

crowd, Tim saying something stupid, me making 

fun of him for it, Tim mis-hearing something, 

me translating it for him, Tim whining 

about how cold or hungry he is, me telling him 

to cry more, and so on. Well, on Tuesday we 

badgered a local fella named Phil Courtney, 

and it turns out he’s having his first-ever art 

show at SOMA next month (June 5-July 4 to be 

precise), so go check out his stuff and buy some 

of it why doncha? Bonus points for his son Tim 

being a great karaoke performer. His version of 

“Tequila” brought a tear to the eye. Remember 

that 15 years I hosted karaoke? 

Thanks a LOT Tish Roussos of the Week: 

Tim and I arrived for our Tuesday gig (we play 

every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday, 5-9) and, 

as ever, asked the manager where they wanted 

us, inside or out. Tish replied, “Well, Camille 

(Peruto) played outside all night last night 

and it was lovely.” While I agree that Camille 

is lovely, we are not Camille! Meaning we are 

much older, crankier and prone to complaining. 

So, two hours after breaking down our 

gear and moving it from the dining room to the 

deck, we broke down our gear from the deck 

and moved it back to the dining room because 

the temperature dipped under 50 and Tim 

sounded like he was playing guitar with boxing 

gloves on. So… thanks a lot, Tish. 

Speaking of chilly gigs, our Rusty Nail 

debut last Sunday was a bit on the frigid side 

(55 degrees in Cape May means 45 degrees 

with a prevailing headwind at the Nail) but 



was quite enjoyable. It’s always 

fun to reacquaint myself with the 

Rusty Nail staff every season, like 

good old What’s His Face, the 

bartender, and Miss Whooziwatz, 

the waitress. (Look, I meet and 

re-meet these people every six 

months, I can’t be expected to 

remember their names, can I?) 

I flipped on 101.5 WCFA last 

Thursday morning for my delivery 

route (if you’re reading this 

in Cape May Point, West Cape 

May, the Marina, Rio Grande, 

Lower Township, Villas or North 

Cape May, I probably dropped 

it off wherever you picked it up 

so YOU’RE WELCOME) and 

IMMEDIATELY flipped it back 

off. Why? Because “Just A Gigolo” 

was playing, which instantly 

makes me think of Parker Smith 

and I hate things that make me 

instantly think of Parker Smith. 

Why did I instantly think of 

Parker Smith, you might ask? 

Shut up and I’ll tell you, I might 

answer. It’s because Parker must 

have performed that song 10,000 

times in 30 different shows at 

Elaine’s and it is forever etched 

in my brain. Yes, it’s as horrible 

as it sounds. But, since I’m the 

one who put that song in about a 

dozen of those shows, I have only 

myself to blame. Bad Terry. Bad. 

Speaking of Elaine’s, I am 

told that they have scrubbed their 

website of all mention of their dinner 

theater, leading one to believe 

that perhaps they have closed it. 

While I have certainly had my 

issues with them over the years, 

this would be very sad. When I 

picked up and moved my life to 

Cape May at the tender age of 23 

(we felt so adult then, didn’t we?), 

it was to spend the 1993 season 

working at Elaine’s. Twenty-nine 

seasons later (13 of them spent at 

Elaine’s over three tours of duty) 

I’m still here. Where that falls on 

the scale of Good-to-Bad Things 

is not for me to decide, but none 

of any of this happens if I don’t 

make that initial leap. Elaine’s will 

always be a part of me. 

Since I write this stupid column 

on Saturday mornings and 

it doesn’t come out til Thurasday 

and because I’m bad at math and 

calendars, I often miss notable 

birthdays and special occasions. 

So, happy three weeks belated 

Mother’s Day to all you fantastic 

women, happy preemptive 

Father’s Day to all you awesome 

dudes (of which I am the awesomest 

because my kids are all 

awesome), and Merry Christmas! 

(Happy Hanukkah to my Jewish 

reader.) 

Levi Update of the Week: If 

you’ll recall, we adopted a barn 

kitten several weeks ago. We 

weren’t entirely sure he was going 

to make it, being so young and 

separated from his mother so 

early, but we figured out how to 

get some food in him (I was today 

years old when I discovered they 

made formula for kittens) and the 

little fella battled his way to robust 

good health thanks to the humans 

who nurtured him. In exchange 

for all the late night feedings and 

midnight cuddles, Levi spends 

every waking hour trying to claw 

our eyes out. Little asshole. 

I’ve been greatly enjoying the 

ongoing process of setting up my 

new Facebook page. I only have to 

remove 6.999 billion more friend 

suggestions before I get to zero. 

Weekly Weight Watch:

for the time being as I expect to 

spend most of the summer wearing 

my standard salt-and-pepper, 

super-sexy vandyke.) I dipped 

back under 240 to 239.5 this week, 

which I’ll take after a two week 

quarantine spent mostly eating 

food from bags and draining bottles 

of Tito’s (there’s only so many 

times you can mow your lawn 

before the neighbors start asking 

questions). My summer diet 

starts in earnest TODAY (okay, 

Monday) as I try once again to 

reach my goal of 199.5 by New 

Year’s Eve. Stop laughing. I can do 

it. I might get horribly ill or lose a 

limb. You never know.

New Show At SOMA 

The NewArt Gallery announces second art exhibition of the 2021 season 

SOMA NewArt Gallery announces its 

second art exhibition of the 2021 season, 

featuring three regional solo artists 

and their work. “Continuum” by 

Wendy Wolfinger Coleman, “Cape May 

Light and Shadow” by Phil Courtney and “On 

A Solitary Walk” by Evelyn Dolan will be on 

display June 5 through July 4. 

Coleman’s continuum connects representational 

work with abstract work through 

a vibrant array of colors, texture and light. 

Courtney portrays nature’s beauty and captures 

Cape May’s glowing luminescence with ease 

and proficiency. Dolan was inspired by unusual 

concepts this year having time to reflect on 

positive aspects of a confined existence. 

There will be an opening night Meet the 

Artist reception on Saturday, June 5 from 6 to 

9pm. Art lovers are invited to attend and enjoy 

an evening of art and conversation.

The Movie Column

When movies reimagined succeed 

financially, does it automatically 

mean you have a new 

classic? The concept seems 

sound enough. Take all the best 

Disney animated creations and turn them into 

live-action movies. Honestly, I haven’t been 

impressed so far. When I see a new one on 

the horizon, I don’t usually mark my calendar. 

This was different with the movie Mulan. 

Here, I did want to jot down a release date. 

Turns out that release date was a moving target 

because of the pandemic. Early glimpses 

of the film were captivating, with sweeping 

landscapes and a promising premise. It 

reminded me of a documentary I enjoyed and 

reviewed — The Eagle Huntress (2016). 

I don’t remember seeing the entire animated 

version of Mulan (1998), but I understood 

the premise. In Imperial China sometime 

in the 15th century, a young girl (only 

child) leaves her family to fight as a soldier in 

place of her aging father. To do this, she must 

impersonate a male. With the help of supernatural 

powers of chi, she rises from the ranks 

of the other soldiers to become a true warrior. 

Given what I’d seen in previews, I was 

intrigued to watch the new Mulan. I can’t say 

that for the same successful live-action movies 

created recently. These include: Beauty and 

the Beast (2017), Aladdin (2019), and The Lion 

King (also 2019). Actually, I saw maybe more 

of these three films that I can remember — 

maybe they just didn’t leave an impression. 

The new adaptation of Mulan is not without 

its controversy. It appears that Disney 

shot some of the film in areas of China where 

human rights violations are being investigated. 

Disney keeps a low profile about this. 

Less controversial is the storyline changes 

that were apparent if you’re a big fan of the 

original. And the film is based on a legendary 

story — some were disappointed it wasn’t 

more accurately told. But on its own, the 

film delivers a clear storyline, outstanding art 

direction and cinematography, and messaging 

that empowers women. The original animated 

film had a love interest subplot that was less 

pronounced in this version. 

Mulan was very enjoyable, and some say 

the best live action film in the Disney series 

of remakes so far. Controversy aside, it would 

appear that Disney is starting to hit a stride 

with these offerings. And there are many 

more stories to tell. The Little Mermaid, Hercules 

and others are in the works already. Proof of 

concept behind them now, it seems like this 

trend is here to stay.

Bird Droppings 

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

It’s kite time. No not the paper and balsa 

wood kind that vexed Charlie Brown. 

Named by Alexander Wilson for a bird 

he collected in 1811, the bird was first 

recorded by Al Nicholson in Cape May 

in the 1960s. Since then, these Peregrinesized-and-shaped 

birds of prey have been 

recorded annually with up to half a dozen 

present at one time. Preying upon large flying 

insects that they secure with their talons in 

mid-swoop, the birds consume prey in the air. 

In years marked by the emergence of the 

17-year locust or cicada, more of these southern 

beauties might be expected to travel north 

of their range. The birds have been found 

breeding as far north as New Hampshire and 

the birds have expanded their range westward 

taking advantage of the tree-planting 

predilection of our species. Golf courses 

seem attractive to these birds who find in 

the wooded edge trees tall enough to support 

their stick nests. The nests are often found 

next to a wasp nest, which affords a level of air 

defense for eggs and young. Nesting in colonies, 

woe to any golfer whose ball lands in the 

trees beneath a kite nest. Adult birds may be 

counted upon to mount a defense. Forget the 

ball. Take a penalty shot and move on. 

Northerly winds offer the best viewing 

opportunity for kite watching in Cape 

May. These winds ferry the birds and the 

dragonflies they consume down to the tip of 

the peninsula. Cape May Point State Park is 

a fine vantage point as is the Beanery/Rea 

Farm. The kites sometimes join late migrating 

Broad-winged Hawks whose wings will be 

showing gaps caused by molt. Kites are more 

buoyant with pale heads and tails that swivel 

as they maneuver to capture prey. 

If you are fortunate, you may see a 

Swallow-tailed Kite, an Osprey-sized aerialist 

with a splayed tail. These large kites may 

be drawn north by the cicada emergence but 

are annual in Cape May. Mississippi Kite’s 

will be present until early June. Swallowtailed 

Kite? Dumb luck, but possible if the 

winds are northerly and skies are clear. 

To see these migrating birds of prey, you’ll 

need binoculars. Scan the base of cumulus 

clouds. These are the terminal stage of a 

rising column of warm air that birds of prey 

ride aloft. Wear sunscreen. Dark glasses and 

a baseball cap help reduce glare and protect 

your eyes. What power binoculars? It doesn’t 

matter — any magnification helps. As for 

identification, the big Sibley guide offers a 

two-page spread of raptors in flight and Jerry 

Liguiri’s Hawks at a Distance is a classic.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, relax with yoga on the beach! 

There’s a reason “a day at the beach” 

is an idiom for something easy and 

enjoyable. Step onto the sand and 

you immediately start to relax, even 

if you’re dragging chairs, a cooler, and 

more toys than your kids need. Whether it’s 

the sunshine, the beauty, or those famous 

negative ions, a day at the beach is good. Of 

course, you can’t always spend a whole day 

at the beach, but even an hour can boost your 

mood. Take your yoga practice to the beach. 

Yoga on the beach is the perfect combination 

of relaxing and challenging. Your 

breathing may match the rhythm of the waves 

without effort, and the sounds of nature are 

better for meditation than any spa music. On 

the other hand, curious toddlers may wander 

over to see what you’re up to, flies can be a 

concern, and there is always the danger of an 

errant frisbee. The shifting surface of the sand 

means your muscles must work differently, 

so familiar poses offer new challenges. It’s a 

great way to refresh your routine. 

If you’re doing your own yoga practice, go 

early in the day. Beach tags are not required 

until 10, but you’ll need yours if you plan to 

stay. Find a flat spot away from other beachgoers. 

Use a beach towel rather than a yoga 

mat and bury the ends so it doesn’t blow. Dig 

your feet into the sand to be sure that you 

are stable for your standing poses. Build a 

little hill of sand under your lower back when 

you recline — don’t leave your weaker spots 

unsupported. Wear your bathing suit under 

your yoga clothing and close out your yoga 

session with a refreshing swim or a “floating 

savasana.” Practice some more challenging 

moves in the water to aid in balance and take 

the weight off your joints. Bring a sweater to 

start and end your sessions — a little coziness 

can be welcome, even in the summer. 

If you prefer yoga with an instructor, local 

studios like Cape May Yoga and Balance Yoga 

offer sessions on the sand, in addition to 

Zoom and studio classes. For a yoga bargain, 

the $5 sessions behind Convention Hall kick 

off on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, 

and then return to the summer schedule 

of Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and 

Saturday at 8 am. Bring a blanket or towel and 

$5 cash to pay the instructor. 

Look for more yogis than usual this weekend, 

as there’s a sold-out Holistic Yoga Retreat 

featuring drum circles, meditation and tips on 

restoring and rebooting a yoga practice. Don’t 

be intimidated by the practice of experts you 

may see on the beach — celebrate the feeling 

of your yoga moves on your body.

for her 15th wedding anniversary. I am livid. Is 

this some kind insult? Is she trying to tell me 

she didn’t like the gift? I want to take the vase 

to her house and smash it on the front porch.
