SELWYN SWIM Club has
had 11 athletes competing
in national championship
events throughout the
country this season.
Six of them returned
victorious from the 2021
New Zealand Division 2
Swimming Championships,
in Dunedin last month.
Holly Smith, 15, won
three medals – gold in the
14 years 400m freestyle
and silver in the 1500m
and 800m freestyle.
Ben Smith, 16, won
bronze in the 16-18 years
400m individual medley.
Charlie Overend, 12, Charlise
Miller, 16, and Morgan
Manners, 14, improved
their personal best times in
the morning heats, while
Emma Ogilvie, 13, made
her first two national meet
finals with great swims and
new personal best times.
The team also achieved a
further 11 top-eight placings
through the five-day
competition.
Marketing and communications
officer Rachel
Close said the championships
had been a great
opportunity for the
swimmers to get out and
compete with the best
swimmers in the country.
GET CONNECTED WITH
Scorch Broadband
“And get some amazing
results after such a rocky
year last year,” she said.
Not being able to compete
due to Covid restrictions
last year had made
the club’s swimmers come
back with more determination
and drive than ever.
The championships followed
two events in April.
Para athletes Ella Benn,
18, and Ieuan Edwards, 18,
represented Selwyn at the
New Zealand Swimming
Championships in Auckland,
which also doubled
as the Olympic and Paralympic
qualifying event.
They won seven medals
between them, including a
gold for Ieuan in the men’s
multi-class 50m breaststroke,
silver in the 50m butterfly,
and bronze in the 50m
freestyle, 100m butterfly and
200m individual medley.
Ella won gold in the
women’s multi-class 400m
freestyle, and silver in the
200m individual medley.
Ella also broke her own
national record for the S9
400m freestyle in a time of
5:09.76, down from 5:14.09.
Three swimmers, Lachlan
Anderson, 15, Brooke
Bennett, 14, and Chloe
Newbigging, 16, represented
Selwyn at the New Zealand
Age Group Championships
in Wellington.
Brooke won three silver
medals in the 14 years age
group for 1500m, 800m
and 400m freestyle, and
one bronze in the 200m
freestyle. Chloe finished
with two seventh place finishes
in the 16 years 100m
and 200m backstroke.
Lachlan performed well
and came away with some
new personal best times.
“Swimming may look
like an individual sport,
but at the competitive level
a huge aspect is all about
team support,” Close said.
“Our swimmers train
together five times a week
minimum, so they really
become a tight-knit
group. No matter where
the swimmers were racing
they all had the support of
the swimmers who were
with them, or watching on
the live stream back home.
“The team are now
back into an increased
training workload at
home in preparation for
the New Zealand Short
Course Championships in
Auckland this August.”
