• By Susan Sandys THE ROLLESTON Volunteer Fire Brigade has more than $1 million of new fire engines, as it trials one appliance and prepares to commission another. The brigade is the third in the country to undertake a sixmonth trial of a fire engine from European manufacturer Magirus. It is using this for callouts instead of its own six-year-old fire engine. At the same time, a new appliance built by Fraser Fire and Rescue in Wellington awaits commissioning after the trial is finished. This will permanently replace the six-year-old unit. Both the new Fraser and Magirus appliances cost FENZ more than half a million dollars each. FENZ regional area co-ordinator Chris Price said the national organisation had bought the Magirus appliance to undergo two years of trials in order to find out if any of its features were worth incorporating into New Zealand fire engines in future. FENZ has its fire engines made in the country, specifying what it wants and deciding on which company will build them in a tendering process. He said the Magirus fire engine, now at Rolleston, had already undergone six-month trial periods at other brigades. One was at Woodville and one was at Kaitaia. After Rolleston, the engine may go to another brigade for a final six-month trial, before finding a permanent home at one of the country’s brigades. The brigades are pretty savvy, and we need good and bad feedback,” Price said. Rolleston chief Cam Kenyon said the Magirus was making an impact in the town, due to its different siren sound. This could be described as a noisy nee-norr, compared to the more traditional and higher pitched whoo-whoo of New Zealand-made fire engines. “People are going to say: ‘What the hell is that?’” Kenyon said. He said so far the engine had operated well at callouts. The brigade was looking forward to commissioning its new appliance once the trial had finished in about six months. • By Susan Sandys DISTRICT councillors have accepted another private plan change application as Rolleston’s exponential growth continues. Rolleston’s size of almost 8000 dwellings will increase by up to 70 per cent if the seven plan change applications, encompassing up to 5709 new residential lots before the council, all make it through the submission and hearing process to the stage of development. At their meeting on Wednesday, councillors accepted the Plan Change 71 application, from Four Stars Development Ltd and Gould Developments Ltd. This means the request can now be publicly notified. The rezoning request would allow for the development of up to 660 dwellings. It relates to land located between Levi Rd, Lincoln Rolleston Rd and Nobeline Drive. The other is Plan Change 73, which would rezone two former plantation forestry blocks on Dunns Crossing Rd and allow for up to 2100 residential lots. Planning manager Ben Rhodes said the council’s move to accept this and other plan change requests, did not mean it supported the proposal. “The request and submissions (following notification) will be heard by an independent commissioner at a public hearing.
