She will be competing against the best on the women’s world road racing tour, and that is no mean feat. But getting to that level doesn’t come easy. It takes years of training, sacrifice, a massive desire to win and support from those close to the athlete. Wednesday June 2 2021 Selwyn Times A $325,000 pump track proposed for the Prebbleton Recreation Reserve will not be challenging enough for youth, says a father and his supporters. The district council is currently consulting on the proposed design. It held a drop-in session on Saturday morning at the Prebbleton Domain tennis and netball clubrooms and is undertaking an online survey. Prebbleton resident Kevin Ban is pleased the district council plans to install a track in spring, after he mooted the idea in 2018. But he opposes the design, which has been released by design and construction company Frews Contracting Ltd. He has received support from several fellow residents in the Prebbleton Community Group Facebook page. Ban said the district council should have instead contracted Velosolutions, an international company with a New Zealand division. This company had designed pump tracks around the world. It was an expert when it came to the design complexities which ensured the tracks were inclusive for all ages and challenging for teenagers. Draft Concept Design for Prebbleton Pump Track Pump tracks designed correctly would have features that five-year-olds could roll through and that experienced riders could use as gap jumps. They provided enough challenges to stay attractive for years, because the rollers and berms could be combined and jumped in different directions. Ban said the proposed track did not provide these features, and youth would quickly get bored by it. Marshall told the Selwyn Times that the district council had carried out a tender process to award the design and construction contract, inviting three parties to provide a proposal. “Velosolutions were one of those parties, but their bid was received after the close date and lacked information that was requested,” Marshall said. “Frews was the only company that submitted a tender bid. Our objective is to work with all of the community to ensure that we provide a pump track that will serve riders of a variety of ages and abilities from across Selwyn,” Marshall said. Date: 04.03.2021 Drawn by: DD Revision: A NEWS 3 In Brief TREE STUMPS REIGNITE Firefighters from Leeston, Southbridge and Dunsandel attended a fire in a large pile of tree stumps last Wednesday about 4pm. Leeston Volunteer Fire Brigade firefighter Vicky Roberts said the fire was threatening a tree line on McConnells Rd. Five appliances attended and were onsite for about five-and-a-half hours. The fire had been caused by reignition of a controlled fire which occurred about a month ago. “Previous burn-offs can take a significant amount of time to cool down and therefore be fully extinguished. It’s worth turning and dousing with water regularly,” Roberts said. COURSES POPULAR Growing demand for the district council’s Leading Learners is seeing the courses sell out quickly. Sixteen young drivers have signed up for each of two courses to be held in the July school holidays, while there is a further 36 names on a waiting list. The district council is planning to run another three courses in October. The half-day course is $20, subsided by the district council and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.
