Neito has had significant involvement with regional youth and environmental committees, and has received scholarships including Canterbury University’s emerging leaders development programme scholarship and the AUT Roy Geddes Scholarship to attend the London International Youth Science Forum. Meanwhile, the district council is undertaking improvements at the wetlands (below). Acting major projects manager Phil Millar said the district council had contracted McLenaghan Contracting to reduce steep banks along about 800m of LII River, and natural habitats to undertake planting of the regraded edges. Each week he introduces a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living things around us. Check out the full list of invertebrates found at www.inaturalist.org/projects/backyardbiodiversity-bugs-in-my-lincoln-section Look for larvae in young apple leaves IF YOU have an apple tree or two in your backyard, then you may encounter the apple leaf midge Dasineura mali. The most obvious indication of the midge is the tightly rolled young apple leaves that contain 3mm long, red, legless larvae. This pest has a large distribution throughout Europe, North America, Argentina and New Zealand. It arrived here from Europe in 1950 on imported apple stock and has rapidly colonised the country. Adult flies are 1.5-2.5mm long and have hairy, 1.5-2mm-long wings with reduced venation. Females have a red abdomen while males are smaller and black in colour. Females produce pheromones that can cause swarms of up to 100 males below trees. After mating, eggs are laid in gaps between buds and unfolding leaves. Eggs are cigar-shaped, orange in colour and 0.3-0.7mm long. Larvae emerge from eggs three-to-six days after laying, and feeding causes the rolled or folded galls characteristic of this pest. Rolled leaves may contain just a few larvae or as many as several hundred. On maturity larvae will either drop into soil or crawl down the trunk to pupate under bark. Pupae are orange within a silk cocoon.
