32 Selwyn Times Wednesday June 16 2021 SELWYN RURAL LIFE Many ways to help flood recovery Central Canterbury farmers and landowners walloped by one of the worst floods in decades can register for help with cleaning up their properties through the Government’s Enhanced Taskforce Green (ETFG) scheme. The Government is offering councils and approved agencies $500,000 to hire job seekers to help with clean-up activities, such as clearing debris. The funding is expected to help councils match people willing to help with work that needs to be done. “Cantabrians are great at lending a hand to neighbours in need, and I encourage any farmers or landowners who need help clearing debris or with other flood damage-related work to register for help,” Canterbury Civil Defence Emergency Management Group Controller Neville said. Selwyn Civil Defence is also pitching in for flood recovery, preparing a plan for collection and disposal of on-farm waste caused by flood damage. Landowners and managers are asked to please separate domestic and farm waste into two piles, or slips if available, One container should be for domestic/ household waste, and the other for farm items and infrastructure such as fencing, silage and baleage wrap. For lifestyle and small block holders who may need to dispose of animals or dead stock, the council recommend animals should be buried at least 100m away from any surface water body (river or lake), marine area, water bores (bury downstream, not upstream) and away from a property boundary Disposal sites should also be 3m above the seasonal high-water table and covered with at least 0.5m of soil. For multiple burials, it’s better to use several smaller pits, rather than larger, deep single pits. The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has support available for farmers who need help sourcing supplementary feed or grazing for your livestock. Obvious priorities for relief agencies include getting damaged infrastructure repaired and feed supplies organised. As well as supporting the sector-wide initiatives, B+LNZ has a number of useful flood recovery resources available, developed after previous floods to help farmers prepare for rain events and deal with both the immediate and long-term consequences. Recovering from a Flood covers four aspects of the business; people, livestock, operational and land; and provides timelines and action-plans around each. The material also includes a decision tree and a detailed guide for re-grassing sediment. LIVESTOCK Immediate priorities 1. Are stock safe? 2. Check fences. 3. If possible, move stock to where there is shelter, such as trees. 4. Check they have access to clean water. If not, move them to a paddock with a reliable water supply or set up a portable trough. 5. Ensure adequate feed, but be careful stock don’t overeat any newly-introduced feed (introduce new feed in limited amounts to reduce the risk of acidosis). 6. Monitor pasture for excess silt. Silt intake can cause ketosis and scouring (check flooded troughs for excess silt, also). 7.
