Delta variant coronavirus threat over the
week has caught the attention of the nation.
The 2-week lockdown successful just
in Victoria was not for the Delta strain. But
spreading out from Sydney this round is the
one that sabotage UK/Europe, to the effect that
the NT, Queensland, WA and ACT are all under
siege. For now only Victoria and Tasmania
remain stable while South Australia with nil
case just closed all borders.
PM Morrison held a cabinet meeting on
Monday with all state governments to have
agreed that all aged care and quarantine
workers must be vaccinated and that everyone
now could opt for AstraZeneca after consulting
a GP. The Australian Medical Council voiced
objection as this policy is against the ATAGI’s
recommendation. But ATAGI may not be
totally right, without knowing the rollout plan
for Pfizer, Modena and Novovax, in making
the recommendation that only people over
60 should take AstraZeneca. ATAGI have to
decide for how long people should wait for
the other vaccine brands or people should just
have AstraZeneca for immediate protection.
With Delta up into our faces certainly ATAGI’s
recommendation cannot hold.
Why young people cannot take
AstraZeneca if they understand the pros and
cons? Germany allows everyone to take it
because they know it is the only quick way out
to guard against the Delta covid.
Australia especially Victoria has been
paying a lot for keeping covid under control. If
we cannot speed up national vaccination there
is no way we can fight against this virus ever
getting sterner.
It is time for our leaders to take a bold
vaccination policy for protecting all nationals
safely and reasonably.

William Leong
Ferrari, Porsche, and Aston Martin
benefit from racing pedigrees that
engender respect and credibility to
their products. Similarly, in the AWD
(potential) off-roading world, heritage
plays a significant role in appealing to
adventure seekers, and this applies to
the Nissan Patrol. Jeep and Land Rover
have been around a little longer, 1945
and 1947 respectively, but the Nissan
Patrol, in jeep clone form, became
available in 1951, and its descendants
since have had various roles in the
public eye, including military, United
Nations, and other services.
Now big and brash, Nissan's
renewed flagship luxury SUV, the latest
Patrol, leaves quite a first impression,
with substantial dimensions but
welcome simplicity in styling,
displaying shorter front and rear
overhangs, more practical 18-inch alloy
wheels, sophisticated new front face,
and more sculptured sides, and LED
front and rear lamps.
The Australian Patrol range has
two models, eight-seat basic Ti or
seven-seat higher-spec Ti-L.
We drove the eight-seat basic Ti.
The Patrol has independent
double-wishbone coil-sprung front

and rear suspension, speed-sensitive
power steering (stiffer at higher speeds),
electronically locking, helical limited-slip
rear differential, and just the one, 5 Litre V8,
engine.
There is an intelligent 4x4, and in front
of the gear shift, you have a rotary electronic
mode selector to engage 'On Road', 'Sand',
'Snow', or 'Rock', plus 'Hill Descent Control',
the rear diff-lock, and choice of 'Auto' for the
front-drive, '4H' at higher speed, or '4L' at
low speed.
The Patrol Ti is finished in plush
leather throughout. The driver's seat can be
electrically raised, and move the middle of
the backrest forward or back to adjust spine
position.
Both second and third rows are
60:40-split, with a metre clearance above
seats in the second row, 870 mm for the
rearmost pews (enough for adults of good
height). The big Nissan has 550-Litres
of luggage space behind the third row,
increasing to 1,490-L and 3,170-L, if third,
then second-row seats are folded. This
gives plenty of room for all occupants
and/or space to transport bulky items.
The three-seat rows rise from front to
back for better, theatre-type viewing. It
is reasonably comfortable for two larger
adults to ride in the back seats, with their
SAMEWAY ISSUE 637 P. 20 02.07.2021
legs angled diagonally inwards! Overall there
is much flexibility to adjust the seating to suit
requirements.
The second row is rolled easily forward into
packed-upright-state behind the front, by lifting
a lever, and it goes back into place just as easily.
This is done to provide storage space or give
access to the back seats. The back seats are just
as easily positioned flat to the floor and back up
again.
The fitted side running boards and handles
are welcome, handy to help raise you into this
lofty wagon, especially on a slope.
There is a plethora of buttons and
functions housed on the glossy wood-style
finish of the centre console and transmission
tunnel, including an 8" colour touch screen, trizone
air-con, controls for heated and cooled
seats in the first row, 360-degree 4-camera
front/rear/overhead-view parking, multizone
climate control and the bouquet of
infotainment. There are 12V and USB plugs
front and back. The speedo and tacho are
analog, with a driver's screen displaying various
info. There are tethers to tie cargo down.
The more expensive Ti-L has extras
including electric sunroof, power rear tailgate,
puddle lights, roof rails, auto headlight
adjusting, electronic steering wheel adjust,
tri-zone-climate, heating/cooling front seats,
2nd-row entertainment screens, 13 premium
Bose speakers, first-row centre console cold
box (I was wondering why it was so big!), and
intelligent rear mirror.
What could raise eyebrows is the sole
engine provided – naturally aspirated, 5.6-litre,
V8 petrol. The massive 298kW / 560Nm
engine is responsive and can generate around
90 percent torque at 2,500 rpm, suitable for
an American muscle car, but unlike the 5L
V8 Mustang, it is relatively quiet and nonattention-seeking.
However, it's not the engine
you would choose for driving mostly around
town, these days. At claimed 14.4 L/100km,
it exists mainly to tow fairly large caravans,
trailers, and boats with ease, go on outback
expeditions with plenty of gear, or if you must,
to impress people.
Mated with a slick seven-speed
transmission, this is a drive-train to perform

well with whichever of the driving modes is
selected but is also capable of a claimed 0-100
km/h time of around 7.7 seconds.
The Patrol always feels massive on the
road, but with a welcome level of sophisticated
handling of its mass. Absorbent tyre walls
play their part and suspension that uses an
interlinked-hydraulic-motion-control system
that gives a reasonable compromise between
comfort and body-roll, considering the mass
involved.
It is easy to handle driving around
suburban streets, handles bumps and uneven
surfaces well, has little body roll on cornering,
and accelerates and breaks impressively. You
are always aware of its size and mass but in
comfortable control of it.
Nissan's Intelligent Mobility program
offers safety features including blind-spot
monitoring, adaptive cruise control, rear crosstraffic
alert, front /rear parking, and forwardcollision
warning and emergency braking.
Dual front and front-side airbags and curtain
inflators cover all three seat rows.
There are six exterior colours available;
Silver, Black, Gold, Gun Metal, Blue, and White.
