Dear Reader
The summer atmosphere
is fantastic and really
pleasing to know that
businesses are opening again
and everyone can start to enjoy
this season’s warm months.
The sun is a fabulous source of
vitamin D, it makes you feel happy and
relaxed but too much of a good thing really
can be dangerous! So always wear a hat,
put on some sunscreen, sunglasses and sip
that, yes, water! There are also wristbands
you can wear, that helps keep your body
from overheating and also pillows to
cool you whilst sleeping. Also beware of
the “downsides”; yes too much sun, not
enough drinking water and too much
alcohol, all can spoil your day. Although
“al fresco” eating on the lovely summer
days and evenings can be quite relaxing
and enjoyable.
What is special about the month of July is
it was named by a Roman Senate in honour
of the infamous Roman general, Julius
Caesar as July is the month of his birth.
Prior to this time, it was called Quintilis.
July’s birthstone is the ruby, which
symbolises contentment. Its birth flowers
are the Larkspur or the Water Lily.
July is a pretty unique month, being
known for the month in which a grand total
of seven US Presidents have died in – more
than any other month – and also known
for being the midway point of the year.
However, July the 3rd is the year’s midway
point, not July the 1st.
The two zodiac signs associated with
the month of July are Cancer and Leo.
People born from July 1st to July 22nd are
members of the Cancer zodiac sign and can
DEAR READER
be identified by their emotional
and intimate nature. Cancer is
a receptive and highly sensitive
sign, capable of huge empathy
giving oodles of love, care and
reassurance when required. Leos are
affectionate, warm and cheerful people
and can be counted on to bring sunshine
into other people’s lives. Dignified, playful,
ambitious and loyal, they’re known for
being exceptionally generous.
Normally there are many fiestas locally in
July but all has changed this year due to the
Corona Virus.
Out & About Costa Blanca magazine
keeps modern and lively by introducing
new ideas each month and keeping each
edition interesting. We are privileged to
have experienced journalists covering all
interesting subjects and would like to take
this opportunity of thanking our gifted
writers for their welcomed expertise and
I receive many compliments to this effect.
The articles being so varied makes Out &
About magazine so popular.
So now relax, sit back with your favourite
magazine and enjoy your reading.
Remember you are never alone with an
“Out & About”.
Keep Cool, Happy and Smiling.
Some of the fondest memories we gather
in life’s journey are those that remind us
of our friends. A friend is someone who
understands your past, believes in your
future, and accepts you just the way you
are. Glad I have such lovely friends.
Yes, you read that correctly, despite
the current health situation, we’re
back to selling properties just like
yours and we have a growing list of
Of course it’s been tough for
When it comes to Javea, we have
decided to move offices and will
soon be re-opening in an even
better location to be able to serve
buyers and sellers even better. So,
yes, the port office is closed, but
keep your eyes out for a new office
opening soon!
You might be wondering about
James Bond cars 25 Cars were used
in over 50 years of the series
Here is a list of most of the James Bond cars in
chronological order, from over 50 years of the
James Bond series. From the humble Sunbeam
Alpine in Dr. No, through to the beautiful Aston Martin
DB5 in Skyfall, to the latest Hybrid Jaguar supercar in
Spectre. Due to space have listed the first 12 but in the
next Out & About hopefully will complete the rest of
these “special” cars.
1
. Series II (1962). James Bond’s first car was the
modest Sunbeam Alpine Series II, in lake blue. After
being invited to the mountain apartment, Bond drove the
Sunbeam up the dusty road and into a trap. Like many
Bond cars to follow, the Sunbeam was English made,
manufactured just outside of Coventry. The iconic car
had also featured in the novel Dr. No. It was rumoured
that the producers had borrowed the Sunbeam from a
local resident to avoid the cost of importing their own.
2
. Drop head 3.5 Litre (1935) From Russia With Love
(1963). Bond’s car is an unusual one for the series,
as the Bentley Mark IV was almost 30 years old at the
time of the film’s release. In several of the Ian Fleming
novels, Bond had driven a Bentley 4.5 litre, which
predated the Mark IV by two years. This was likely the
inspiration behind its inclusion in the film.
3
. Aston Martin DB5 – Goldfinger. (1963). Thunderball
(1965). The Aston Martin DB5 is the quintessential
James Bond car, and one of the most recognizable and
famous cars in cinema history. In the novel, Bond had
driven a DB Mark III, but the producers chose to use
the newer DB5, which had been released only 3 months
prior to shooting. The special effects team added a
large array of gadgets to the car, including an ejector
seat, machine guns, a smoke screen, and tyre slashers.
The tie-in Corgi model of the DB5 became the bestselling
toy of the year, and the producers brought the
car back for the next film, Thunderball. Since then a
DB5 has also featured in Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never
Dies, Casino Royale and Skyfall.
4
. Toyota 2000GT - You Only Live Twice. (1967).
Known as Japan’s first supercar, it was the obvious
car of choice for “You Only Live Twice”, a Bond film set
primarily in Japan. Only 351 models were produced,
making the car rarer than a DB5. The 2000 GT was
actually a hardtop coupé, but the low roof proved too
restrictive for Sean Connery, who was too tall to sit
comfortably in the car. At short notice, Toyota made
modifications to produce a special open top version
just for the film.
5
. Aston Martin DBS - On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
(1969) introduced a new James Bond, George
Lazenby, and it was only right to equip him with the
latest Aston Martin. The Aston played a key part in the
film’s shocking ending, as well as introducing the new
lead actor. Bond is first shown driving along a winding
Portugal road in the beautiful Aston Martin DBS. In the
following Bond film, Diamonds Are Forever, the
DBS was briefly shown being fitted with
missiles in Q’s lab.
6
. Mercury - Cougar XR-7
(1969) On Her Majesty’s
Secret Service. When
Bond is on the run
without his Aston,
he has to rely on
a red Mercury
Cougar. In order
to lose the tail,
enters a stock
car race track,
and after
a few laps
manages to
escape.
7
. Ford
Mustang.
Mustang Mach
1 (1971). While
Diamonds Are
Forever wasn’t the
most well received
Sean Connery Bond
film, it did have one of
the best car chases of
the early series. While at the
wheel of a Ford Mustang, Bond
finds himself on the Sheriff’s radar,
resulting in a high tension chase along the
Las Vegas strip. Interestingly, the Vegas strip was so
busy that for most of the chase scene, large crowds of
tourists could be seen on the sidewalks, watching the
action. The producers hoped that the chase would be
so exciting that the audience wouldn’t notice. Another
point of interest is that virtually all the cars destroyed
during filming were Fords. That’s because Ford offered
to supply as many cars as the producers wanted, if
Bond drove a Mustang.

8
. AMC Hornet X Hatchback (1974) In the Man with
the Golden Gun. Mary Goodnight gets herself
kidnapped by Scaramanga. With Scaramanga almost
out of sight, Bond spots a car dealership, and steals an
AMC Hornet, driving it right out through the showroom
window. Live and Let Die’s Sheriff J.W. Pepper returns
as a Bangkok tourist, who just so happened to be sitting
in the passenger seat of the Hornet. The pair chase
Scaramanga, with Pepper adding some comic relief to
the tense action scene.
9
. Esprit 9. S1. The Spy Who Loved Me 1977. The
producers wanted to out-do themselves and create
the most spectacular film of the series. They
equipped Bond with a white Lotus
Esprit S1 in a chase sequence
covering land, air and water.
Bond is chased on
land by a motorbike
equipped with a
jet-propulsion
s i d e c a r
rocket. After
eliminating
their land
problems,
they are
attacked
from the
air by a
helicopter.
Unable to
lose the
tail, Bond
drives off
the edge of a
peer. The Lotus
transforms into a
mini submarine, the
enemy brings on their
underwater assault. The
Lotus handles them with ease
and Bond transforms the vehicle
back to a car and drives out of the sea onto
a beach of unsuspecting tourists.
. Essex Turbo (1981) . For Your Eyes Only
10 (1981) Following the well received appearance in
The Spy Who Loved Me, Lotus returned for a second and
final time in For Your Eyes Only, with an upgraded Lotus
Esprit Turbo. Bond drives the Esprit to the hideout but
when it comes time to escape, the car meets with an ill
fate.
JULY 2021 | 9
Citroën 2CV. (1981) After his Lotus self-destructs,
11 Bond is forced to escape in a Citroën 2CV, not quite
the calibre of car Bond is used to. Some scenes were
sped up, most noticeably during a backwards-forward
stunt that the 2CV struggled to pull off. However, the
scene was intended to be as humorous as it was tense.
Bajaj RE (1983), Octopussy. The Bajaj RE is a
12 model of auto rickshaw, also known as a Tuk Tuk
taxi, that appeared in Octopussy. Bond leaves in a taxi
with ally agent Vijay. He soon spots Khan’s henchman in
the taxi behind, armed with a muzzled shotgun. Bond
tells Vijay “we’ve got company”, to which Vijay replies
“No problem, this is a company car.” It is outfitted with a
powerful engine by Q-branch.
Finances have hit rock bottom and I am going
to have to return to the UK to live with my
parents, after many years of living here in
Spain. I am so concerned about the future
and lie awake worrying about bills that I am
going to have to pay. I feel so low and fearful
of what comes next!
Anita. Orba
Anita, you have managed to live here in
Spain for many years so please do not
think that you are a failure in any way. It
is harder than ever to live and work here
and times are hard for so many right
now.
Look at this as moving on and not
running away and open to what comes
next for you. I believe in fate, and for
some reason you have been directed to
return to a new destination. There is not
a bill that could ever be paid by stress
and misery, and all will be sorted out. I
sincerely hope that the change of location
brings you some kind of reward because
you have done nothing wrong. I would
like to think too that life takes on a new
meaning for you, and that you will
return, one day soon, to see all who you
leave behind.Good Luck!
My son is seventeen and has not yet gone
through the rebellious teenager phase,
however, he has become very quiet and
seems to have very few friends around him.
I find it hard to talk to him, and he spends
his evenings either studying or playing on
his computer. He is moody and something
is worrying him and I seem not to be the
right person to talk to him. Have I failed as
a Father? His Mother died two years ago
and they were close.
Henrik. Altea La Vieja.
Henrik, your son sounds like he is a
very typical teenager. He is developing
his character and personality, and is
making that transition from boy to
man. Is it possible that he feels that
he fits neither category right now? A
child benefits from the wisdom and
love and good parenting skills of his
Father and Mother, but now you are
a single parent you may be his sole
adult family contact? I would suggest
that you have a serious talk with
him, but I would ask you not to talk
to him in the family home. Choose a
neutral territory and if you can go for
a walk together that’s a great idea. The
most important question to ask him
right now is to be cleverly worded to
accurately assess if he is happy or not.

AGONY UNCLE JULY 2021 | 11
If he is quiet then there’s nothing
wrong with that, and he may not be
rebellious at this age; or indeed be a
late developer. Knowing that he can
talk to you about anything will serve
to provoke a future conversation
and make him feel that he may not
have a Mother now but he does have
a very concerned Father who loves
him and only wants the best for
him. You may not get an immediate
response but establishing a new fully
open relationship with your son will
bring results for you both. Keep in
touch please.
Amy. Benidorm
There is only one word for what you
are suffering and it is abuse. Anyone
who really loved you would not treat
you this way. I am sorry that I could
not print your mail, but I urge you to
seek help in any way that you can right
now before things escalate. Please get
back to me if you need any help in a
in deserving the help that you need
right now, and my heart goes out to
DR. M. ISABEL SIGNES-SOLER
It is another way of saying “prescription
sunglasses”. Rx sunglasses combine the sharp
vision of prescription eyeglasses with the total
protection of sunglasses. Before you can order
prescription sunglasses, you’ll need an up-to-date
vision prescription. An eye doctor can provide you
with one as part of a comprehensive eye exam.
Different types of Rx sunglass lenses
The lenses in Rx sunglasses can feature
a combination of different materials
and coatings. Each has its own
purpose, suiting certain
lifestyles, personal habits
and work environments.
Materials and addons
might seem
overwhelming at first,
but making informed
choices can lead to safer,
more comfortable lenses
in the long run.
Popular lens options
include:
• Polycarbonate lens material
• Trivex lens material
• High-index plastic lens material
• Polarized lens coating
• Photochromic (transition) lens coating
• Gradient lens finish
• Mirrored lens finish
Lens materials
Aside from standard plastic or glass materials, three
of the most popular lens materials are polycarbonate,
Trivex and high-index plastic.
Polycarbonate lenses use a material that’s strong
and resistant to impact, making them a good fit for
sports and other physical activities. The lightweight
lenses are also up to 30% thinner than regular lenses.
Trivex, initially developed for military helicopter
windshields, are also durable yet lightweight.
What are Rx
sunglasses?
However, Trivex lenses have a little less virtual
distortion than polycarbonate, resulting in a slightly
sharper field of view.
High-index lenses offer a thinner, lightweight
alternative for people with a high degree of myopia,
hyperopia or astigmatism. These lenses bend light
in a different way and require less lens material to
correct your vision.
Lens coatings
Choosing a lens material is far from
the only way you can make a pair
of Rx sunglasses your own.
Polarized, photochromic
and gradient coatings help
you further customize the
function of your frames.
Polarized lenses are
excellent at reducing
glare, making them a
solid option for those
who spend a considerable
amount of time near water,
snow or other reflective
surfaces.
People who fish, participate in
summer or winter sports, or simply
want to drive more comfortably on a sunny
day may all be able to benefit from polarized Rx
sunglasses.
As valuable as polarization can be, it’s important to
keep their effect on digital screens in mind. Any type
of polarized sunglasses can make it hard to see the
backlit displays on devices like:
• Cell phones
• Smart watches
• Laptops
• ATMs
• Digital car dashboard controls
Photochromic lenses (also known as transition
lenses) automatically get darker when they’re
exposed to sunlight. In addition to offering the

DR. M. ISABEL SIGNES-SOLER JULY 2021 | 15
convenience of a single pair of sunglasses instead
of two separate frames, their Rx lenses ensure your
eyes are never exposed to too much of the sun’s
ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
Gradient lens finishes usually have a darker shading
at the top of the lens, compared to the bottom. This
can also be called a “single gradient.”
Rx sunglasses can also have a reflective mirrored
finish — thin layers of metallic coating on regular
lenses. These lenses reflect and reduce visible light,
but still require full UV protection to safeguard your
eyes from the sun.
How Rx sunglasses protect your eyes from UV rays
When you hear “sunglasses” and “UV,” you
probably think of summer. But ultraviolet
protection can be just as useful during other
seasons, too. Under the right conditions,
snow can reflect as much as 80% of sunlight,
according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.
UV protection is an important part of any
pair of sunglasses — prescription or not.
Overexposure to the sun’s UV radiation can
increase your risk of developing certain eye
conditions, including:
• Cataracts
• Eyelid melanoma (skin cancer)
• Macular degeneration
This month
discounts on
frames and
sunglasses
up to
70%
• Photokeratitis
• Pterygium
• Solar retinopathy
These risks can be even more pronounced for
children, since their eyes are more sensitive to
UV and are exposed to about three times more
radiation as the adult eye, according to the
Vision Impact Institute.
The optometrist will help you choose the best
lenses for you. So, in the summer, protect your
eyes with prescription sunglasses and enjoy life
outside. I am sure there is one for you.
AFTERMATH BY THE ROLLING STONES
Hello again and a warm welcome
to July´s All Time Greats. As well
as some general observations
about The Stones this month´s article is
specifically about their fine album from
1966 Aftermath. This was the collective
work in which the band came of age, every
track on it written by the new creative force
of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and
much of it enriched by the talent of Brian
Jones. He was soon to become the “enfant
terrible” of the band and lost his life at just
27 in 1969 in circumstances that are still
debated. At this stage , losing interest at
simply being a non singing guitarist, Brian
was able to turn his considerable talents
to playing a number of other instuments
on the album which greatly enhances its
quality. Far too little has been said about the
remaining members of The Stones so I will
add here that this album and many many
other works by the band are laid on top of
the rock solid foundations of their brilliant
rhythm section of Bill Wyman on bass &
Charlie Watts on drums.
By 1966 the two leading bands of the beat
era had hugely conflicting images that had
the media telling people you could support
one band or the other but not both. The
Beatles were the good guys whose music
was steadily mellowing and The Stones
were the bad guys who would never leave
their origins in blues and swamp rock.
Aftermath WAS the first LP by The Stones
which was entirely of their own creation
and was a development from their previous
collections of odds and ends which
had even hidden the “home
made” tracks under the
monniker of “Nanker
Pheldge!” If you must
draw comparison
with The Beatles you
could call Aftermath
their equivalent
of “A Hard Days
Night.” Another,
false, comparison is
that no UK hits appear
on the LP but it does
start with the US single
“Mother´s Little Helper” about
the growing drug culture of the day
and featuring Jones on Sitar. This track
ends with a simple “Oi” which only The
Stones could have got away with. Moving
on through “Stupid Girl” (vintage Stones
that was banned by some prudish radio
stations) we come to the first shock. An
Elizabethan madrigal like song called
“Lady Jane” with Brian Jones on dulcimer.
After the classic “Under My Thumb”, with
Jones on Marimba for the first of 2 times,
come a series of tracks that reminded their
fans that The Stones were still a good old
R & B band. If I might suggest you skip
a good 7 minutes of the overlong jam
“Coming Home” the original of Chris
Farlowe´s no. 1 hit “Out Of Time” early on
Side 2 is a 6 minute must. “I Am Waiting”
is another surprise its overall gentleness
invoving a dulcimer again interrupted by
2 passionate middle eights of rage and
frustration. Mick & Keith´s “Take It Or
Leave it” (one of four hits for other acts,
this time The Searchers, on Aftermath)
lead to the final two tracks of The Stones at
their raunchiest best.
Aftermath , their best work to date, gave
The Stones fans just what they wanted and
was a massive success for them topping
the album charts for a number of
weeks. It was a silver disk in
the UK and went platinum in
America. As the beat boom
ran out of steam to be
replaced by , in a nutshell,
more sophisticated music
The Rolling Stones were
now second only to The
Beatles. Many saw them
as, for them, the better of
the two bands and certainly,
in both cases, a golden era of
creativity had started.
Magic Travel
Moments
Highlight those (many) travel moments in
my life when things have ‘sparkled’.
by John
David
Moorhouse
DAVID MOORHOUSE.
Meeting Face to Face
Approaching The Rock from the
Spanish Mainland is indeed
an awe-inspiring experience.
It looms large, its impressive Peak
sometimes crowned by cloud (like a veil).
Having watched a cricket match for
a while, we make our way up from the
Town. Near the Top of The Rock a Magic
Moment presents itself....
a group of Barbary Apes (3 of them)
are seated on rocks at the side of the path
and react to our arrival with a degree of
excitement (or is it in anticipation of a
tidbit?)
The 3 Apes (is this a family?) know the
ropes better than we do. Cautious to a
degree, one of them (the leader?) makes
a move towards us without going so far
as to hold out a begging hand. He (or
she) mouths some kind of ape-greeting
towards us.
This is not a meeting between two
families (although in reality it is).
This is not a meeting between two
cultures (although in reality it is).
This is a confrontation between two
species of animal, which somehow does
not feel antagonistic; rather, there is
mutual curiosity and recognition of rights
to co-exist on this

EMPTINESS
They say nothing in the known Universe is
totally void of matter, but there are places
(look no further than our own Planet) that
give me the appearance of being ‘empty’,
e.g., The Sahara Desert, Easter Island and
the Arctic Ice Cap (if this last does not melt
away to nothing - or even if it does!).
One such ‘appearance of being empty’
can be viewed from a ship sailing from
Greece to Italy....
as the ship glided smoothly along the
Albanian Coast, heading from Patras to
Venice, we were intrigued by a stretch
of the Coast that appeared to be totally
empty of civilization - no seaside towns
nestling in sheltered inlets, no hamlets
crowning the high mountain ridges
brooding over the sea, no fishing or other
vessels in our vicinity, no visible signs of
life.
There was just one break in this empty
panorama - the distant glimpse of a cluster
of buildings close by the sea, wedged into
a narrow ravine, a break in the mountain
chain. But, other than that, nothing -
emptiness !
The Spinning Wheel
by John David Moorhouse.
It keeps turning and turning,
all control spurning, cutting and burning
while I am learning.... to follow its lead,
not to desire or need to feed on
knowledge or wisdom,
power or greed,
youth or maturity,
love or greed.
Do any of these things matter?
In the end, the Wheel will shatter all
and scatter it around,
laying down new ground from which
New Life will abound !

and incendiaries were dropped by the
Allies.

DEE’S TRAVELS
BOOKING A
LOW-COST FLIGHT
As I mentioned last month I love
flying and I love airports. I guess
if I thought about the distance
between me and the ground below as we
float above the clouds, I might change
my mind. I forget that it’s a long, long
way down and no one has laid out a nice,
soft, landing mattress to catch me.
Today, booking a flight especially on
the low-cost airlines requires a pot of
coffee; three Valium preferably Prozac;
a magnifying glass; pizza slices and
mountains of patience. It’s even advisable
to send the rest of the family off to the
beach to protect tender ears from the
naughty words they might overhear.
Departure and arrival destinations?
Preferred time? Approximate price?
Return or single? Number of suitcases?
Insurance? Cancellation waiver? Seat
preference (do you want to sit anywhere
near the rest of the family?) Early or
priority boarding? Carryon luggage; size,
weight (will it fit into our little cages, the
ones we shrink every couple of months?)
Future thrilling and exciting emails from
us right to your inbox?
The list is endless. But here’s where
they’re sneaky. See that little box in the
corner, there, behind the pop-up advert
that won’t go away? You didn’t tick the
‘no’? Gottcha ya! We’ve just doubled the
price. You thought you were going to fly
for under £20 to Stanstead, didn’t you?
We’ve now calculated the real cost and
it’s a little over £300. But for that, we’ll
throw in an extra case so your wife can
also take clothes with her, how’s that for
a bargain?
We are your airline and we love you.
Big warning. Never, ever check out
flight times and prices and then go off for
a sandwich and a drink to steady your
nerves. The moment you log on to the
site again, for of course your time will
have expired, those little bots in there
will go crazy, rubbing their bytes in glee
we’ve hooked another victim here so
let’s hike the price up guys. If you don’t
believe me, try it for yourself.
Now, this is the exciting part
passengers. Should you have travelled
to a foreign country, despite being
warned it’s not a terribly good idea
right now with Covid and all, should
the powers at the top decide to go from
green to amber, or, worse amber to red,
then we will happily fly you home for
only five times the original price of your
fare. How generous is that? Or, if your
flight is cancelled you can rebook for
a date next year, but we can’t promise
it won’t be diverted to Vladivostok or
Minsk. You never know who you are
JULY 2021 | 29
travelling with these days.
Another piece of good advice. Try not
to book a window seat. This is nothing
to do with access to the small restrooms
where you exit battered and bruised after
being thrown around in the smallest
space imaginable, fingers bloody from
trying to turn on the various taps and
levers. No, your window seat just might
give you a view of the ground staff
practicing for the World Cup Rugby as
they fling your case across the tarmac and
you are praying that the pot containing
Aunt Edna’s ashes in the pottery urn so
lovingly handled by you, doesn’t break
and scatter the contents over your bikinis
and thongs. Squashed into a seat built for
midgets, you can only gaze helplessly at
the commotion below and pray you and
your suitcase are going to meet again,
don’t know where, don’t know when…
From the time you have left the house,
arrived at the airport, parked the car;
taken the free ride from the car park to
the airport; checked in; spent several
minutes sweating hoping the scales are
out of order as you know you’re over
weight; stripped to your underwear to
whip through the little metal arch; spent
extra uncomfortable moments being
pawed in a secluded cabin by more
airport staff; retrieved your belongings
and sprinted to the farthest boarding gate
reserved for the low-cost departures; you
need that holiday.
Would it be quicker to walk to Spain?
Possibly, but then crossing the Channel
might pose a problem.
PIRIFORMIS
SYNDROME
Piriformis syndrome is
a condition in which a
muscle we have called the
piriformis, causes pain in the
buttock area and on occasions
can even irritate or compress the
sciatic nerve.
We have two piriformis
muscles, these link the
sacrum to the hip
on either side.
It is located
underneath the
gluteus muscle
and the sciatic
nerve runs
underneath
the muscle
in most cases
(although in
some people
the nerve runs
through the
muscle itself).
So what happens
to the muscle in
order for it to cause
problems?
The piriformis muscle can become
tight or can spasm, causing pain in the
buttock area and/or affecting the sciatic
nerve.
• This can happen due to an overuse of
the muscle (sporting injuries)
• Also overstretching of the muscle can
cause a spasm reaction.
• As a protective measure to prevent
lower back and hip movement because
of an injury (herniated disc, locked
sacroiliac joint,etc)
• Sitting down incorrectly: crossing
legs, sitting with wallet in back
pocket…
• Leg length or foot
issues that affect our
leg rotation.
What are the
symptoms?
• Buttock
pain. Can be
worse sitting,
walking/
running
(especially
uphill), may
improve
laying down.
•
Referred pain to
lower back and
down back of the
thigh.
• Sciatica symptoms if
nerve is irritated which include
pain and/or numbness that can travel
all the way down to the foot.
• On occasions can even cause coxis
pain because of its insertions on the
sacrum.
Simon Ratcliffe is a licensed Physiotherapist and Certified Osteopath C.O. for the
SIMON RATCLIFFE
JULY 2021 | 31
What can be done?
First of all, a correct diagnosis is needed,
it is important to exclude a possible
herniated disc as the cause of our pain.
With the correct questioning and manual
tests applied by your therapist.
Once the piriformis syndrome is
confirmed there are three things that
need treating:
• The active trigger points associated
with the muscle.
• Any shortening of the muscle.
• The assessment of what is causing it
to spasm or shorten.
With treatment we experience very
good results, although recovery time
varies due to several factors (longevity of
injury, specific cause of injury, etc)
As always it is best to be assessed by a
professional to help get you on the mend
as soon as possible.
Walsh’s Wisdom
Spanish Skipper who
saved an armada
Never forgotten was the drama as
the Palm Line freighter Enugu
Palm finally answered the wheel
and skimmed by a metre or two a row
of ocean-going freighters moored at an
African port’s quays.
A second’s delay on the part of Captain
Inés would have led to one of the worst
shipping disasters in African history. Had
it not been for the quick thinking of the
skipper several freighters moored at the
Ivory’s Coast Port of Abidjan would have
been devastated.
This true story and others is waiting to
be discovered in Costa author Michael
Walsh book, Untold Sagas of the Seas
Volume II from Amazon and Kindle.
Palm Line, a British-owned shipping
company, plied 5,000 miles West
Africa’s seaboard. In the early 1960s, the
company’s commodore was Spanish born
Captain Inés, whose hands-on character
was legendary. He never suffered fools so
I got on perfectly well with him.
Palm Line vessels were specially
designed to negotiate the sand bars of
the African creeks that excluded entry to
liners that might otherwise bring
trade to communities located to
the Dark Continent’s interior.
The Port of Abidjan on the
Ivory Coast, however, is a modern port.
Having picked up the pilot at the port’s
approaches, Captain Inés, in accordance
with the protocol, surrendered control
of the Enugu Palm to the pilot. The local
pilot’s knowledge of the port is essential
for safe mooring.
On this occasion, it soon became selfevident
that all was not quite right. The
recently boarded pilot was blind drunk
and quite incapable of riding a bicycle
let alone a fast-moving ocean liner in the
narrow confines of a port.
The Enugu Palm did successfully
negotiate the port’s Vridi Canal without
colliding with its palm thronged banks.
As an 18-year-old Ordinary Seaman
standing at the ship’s wheel, I was best
placed to see the unfolding drama as the
pilot inexplicably instructed the engine
room to full ahead. After all, we were now
approaching a lengthy quay along which
several freighters were moored.
Eyes and mind riveted, I watched the
expression of growing alarm on the face
of Captain Inés. Racing at full speed,
about 18 kilometres per hour, the Enugu
Palm’s bow was clearly destined to cleave
the nearest moored freighter in two. I
must have been the only British sailor
ever to witness a port pilot being roughly
Walsh’s Wisdom
Homes in Spain
Now and Then
Everything changes except the memories.
It was December 2000 when I took my
sons for an all-inclusive hotel holiday in
Benidorm. It was a chance choice as the travel
agent had offered three breaks in different
locations.
‘Oh, boy, this’ll do me’ I thought to myself
as whilst the UK suffered frozen pipes, I
avoided sunburn.
Sadly, I had no skills that were needed in
Spain. Then at that moment of reflection on
the beach, I read a news snippet that reported
the high number of Brits buying retirement or
second homes on the Spanish Riviera.
‘Eureka!’ I whispered. ‘These buyers speak
my language and I can sell.’
Arriving back in Blighty, I immediately
picked up a copy of Homes Abroad magazine.
By the day’s end, my artfully modified
CV was on its way to several property
sellers. Quick as a flash, Justo Quesada’s
housebuilding company got back to me.
I was invited to attend the Properties
Abroad event at Birmingham’s National
Exhibition Centre (NEC). Talk about hitting
the ground running. Such were the high
numbers of eager buyers overwhelming the
stands I was told on arrival to ‘just get on with
it’.
Goodness, I couldn’t even pronounce Los
Alcazares or even Torrevieja. But I made a
good fist of it and was taken on and not once
WALSH’S WISDOM
did I look back.
Over the following years I set my stall out at
hotels and exhibition centres all over Britain.
I don’t think I was a gifted entrepreneur for
during that time selling properties in Spain
was as easy as taking sweets off a kid.
Setting up my property’s abroad outlet
near Liverpool’s city centre, I employed two
staff and recall us arranging viewing trips
for potential clients. My clients were so well
qualified I was told my conversion rate was
better than any others.
In 2007 I ‘retired’ to Spain and taking up my
pen I made a reasonable living.
Recently, aware that interest in buying
homes in Spain was on the rebound, I
discovered how much the market had
changed. It seemed that high-end apartments
are now in vogue, perhaps because of their
easier maintenance. Otherwise, prices of villas
and standard apartments, quads and suchlike
seem more or less as they were.
Brexit hasn’t helped British buyers,
Covid-19 put the dampers on EU buyers and
sanctions drastically reduced the enormous
potential of the Russian goldfields. But there
is enormous optimism from developers and
sellers. The market is in the recovery position.
‘What killed the market in 2004 and will
the old ways of doing things return,’ I asked
a former colleague who stayed with the
profession through the good years and bad.
WALSH’S WISDOM
JULY 2021 | 37
He smiled: ‘Greed killed the market.’
‘Are viewing trips back on,’ I asked.
‘Yes, but many investors tend to purchase
through video conference. Otherwise, buyers
still like to press the flesh. People buy lifestyle
so the viewing trips will return. This is the
easy bit thanks to Spain being the best place in
Europe to invest in or retire too.

ANNE RODGER
VIRUS
written during lockdown - May, 2020.
BY
ANNE RODGER
Hello, dad. I was getting worried. This
the third time I’ve phoned. Were you
outside?
- Spent a long time in the garden, watching
the butterflies on the Wisteria. Think
I must haver dozed off because I was
suddenly quite chilly, so I’ve come back
inside.
- Did you see anyone while you were out
there?
- Yes. My cleaning lady came.
- I hope you observed ‘social distancing’?
- Of course. She only comes up to the gate.
Shouts ‘Hello’ and asks if I’m OK.
- So she doesn’t come in?
No. I put her money in an envelope and
sellotape it to the gate. She waves to me and
shouts “Thank you”. See you next week.”
She’s a nice lady.
- I bet she is. Have you had supper yet?
- No. I don’t know what to have.
- What about the smoked ham I gave you?
What don’t you make a sandwich?
- Smoked ham? No, you didn’t give me
smoked ham. I think I’ve got some cheese.
But there’s no bread left.
- Dad! I put a packet of soft bread rolls in the
bag when I gave you the ham. Remember
the blue bag, in the Car Park at Lidl on
Tuesday? You put it on the passenger seat
in your car.
- Did !? Are you sure? I remember the blue
bag and you watching me pick it up. It
must still be in the car.
- Dad! It’s Friday. You’ve had it 3 days. It
won’t be fit to eat being in the car all that
time - in this heat.
- I’ll go and get it. I like smoked ham.
- I know. That’s why I bought it. Don’t eat it
if its gone off.
- I’ll put some mustard on.
- Every week I give you lovely fresh food -
and I always say - “Put it in the fridge as
soon as you get home”.
I suppose you stopped for a drink on the
way and then forgot you had food in the
car.
- Spencers is the only bar that’s open. But
the barmaid was telling me there’s more
opening next week. She said....
- Dad, you’re going to have to take more
care of the food I give you - now that
you’ve learned to use the fridge.

ANNE RODGER
- It’s no use, that fridge.
- What’s the matter with it?
- It’s so full. I can’t get another thing in it.
- You mean you haven’t used all the food I’ve
been giving you?
- I put it in the fridge, like you tell me - but it
gets stocked up, and you wrap everything
so it all looks the same. I don’t know what’s
in there.
- So what do you do when you want a meal?
- I put a frozen one in the microwave. Like
Spaghetti Bolognese.
- That’s good. So you’ve still got frozen
meals?
- I think there’s 3 in the Cold Box.
- Cold box?
-Ah. You don’t remember the Cold Box, do
you? It was in the garage. Blue and white.
Big handle. We used to take it on picnics
when you were little. And to the beach -
full of cold drinks. That’s what it’s for - to
keep things cold.
- Yes, I know, dad. So you’re using the cold
box.
- I don’t use the fridge anymore. And the
door of the freezer compartment is frozen
shut, so I don’t know what’s in there.
- So, how do you freeze the blue things?
- What blue things?
- The blue things with liquid in that you
freeze before you them in the cold box.
- You’re not listening to me, are you? It’s food
I put in the Cool Box - not plastic things.
I keep it on the stool in the kitchen, so it’s
just the right height to reach into without
me bending.
- Whatever makes you happy, dad.
- I would’ve thought you’d be
congratulating me. This virus isn’t all
negative, you know. Look at how well I’ve
learned to look after myself while we’ve been
in lockdown.
- Well done, dad. Keep up the good work.
Speak to you tomorrow.
42 | OUT AND ABOUT COSTA BLANCA A MEDIUM RARE
O
ften my clients come for an appointment hoping for
a message from their dearly departed loved ones;
and I am pleased to facilitate the great Spiritual
Connection that allows the passing of messages from Earth
to Spirit and Spirit to Earth. As the World becomes more
accepting of Spirituality we are starting to develop faith in
all connections that link our Planet with the holding station
that is the territory of the Spirit World. No message is too
long or too short, and such messages are always sent with
much love in both directions.
Over the years I have had a wealth of opportunity to
pass on words of comfort to grieving people and I do
this in a great variety of ways, to suit the client, and to
hopefully enjoy a great connection. We are all Spirit living
in a body, and one day our bodies die and what is released
is the encrypted information etched onto our souls whilst
we are living. Events long forgotten can come flooding
back and they, in so doing, prove the survival of the soul of
the departed as evidential matters. Often things that appear
very odd or unessential are the keynotes of what is needed
to prove to people in general that the soul never dies and
that there are many there in the Spirit World either waiting
to pass on a message to loved ones on Earth, or wishing to
receive news of those that they had to leave behind after
the finality of death separated them from loved ones and
family.
After any journey these days we pick up our phones
and send a message or call to say that we have arrived
safely at our destination. Our friends and family like to
keep in touch, but they are very relieved to know that
their loved ones are safe and happy and that all is well. So,
imagine that you take the longest journey ever and that you
crossover from Earth to Spirit. What happens when you
need to inform your family or friends that you are safe? It
takes time to find out how to send a message, so there may
be a delay in such a communication ever leaving the Spirit
World. So too, what happens if your friends and family are
scared to make contact with you? Many fear the concept
of what they wrongly call disturbing the dead, who are
sleeping, or are maybe frightened by the concept that
messaging is in any way possible. Such communication
could be eerie or creepy, or wrong, or maybe all three. In
the Spirit World there is often discouragement to contact
Earth whilst we are awake. As such the protocol is to enter
into our dreams, and many departed souls resort to this
in an attempt just to say that they are alive and well and
inhabiting within the greatest of holding stations for the
interchange of communication between the dead and the
living. If your family feels that anything Spiritual is wrong
then it may be hard for anyone within it to receive the
message from the Spirit World. Your own lack of faith can
cause you not to see portents or understand the concept of
silent messages or fully understand the slightest indication
that the dead can, and do, communicate whenever they
can. Spirit has broadcast through radios and television
and even the odd flickering of light bulbs. Sometimes we
see apparitions of our loved ones as creatures of Nature,
or hear someone calling them by name. One client told
me that her husband had not contacted her, and knowing
him well and his sincere intention on death to fully
communicate, I was very surprised. Then the same client
said that there was a smell of his tobacco around the house,
that his towel was hanging up wet though unused in the
bathroom, and that she felt his body next to hers in bed at
night. Three ways of communicating! Another client came
to have a coffee with me to chat about the sad departure
of her son. The music in the bar suddenly changed and his
favourite song blasted out. In this case the message was so
strong that he made sure, since it was his favourite song,
that the volume would be turned up, just the way he liked
to hear it.
So send your message out loud and clear. If you need
help with this then come to see me, my calling card gains
priority access for me after my sixty years with Spirit, and
I will use it to contact your loved ones on your behalf.
It’s just what I do, amongst other things, and it’s such
a comfort to be sure that loved ones are out there and
are willing to prove their identity and well being by the
passing of messages; that may be sent by a variety of ways,
but which come directly from the heart and the soul. Be
open to get answers in incoming messages, but do know
that replies can be in many diverse and different ways.
Love never ever dies. Our loved ones look down and see
us and so lift the barriers, if there are any, and freely allow
the communication to flow between you. Sometimes after
passing there is a time when the soul is being received into
Spirit and it could be some time before you get a response.
If this is the case send the message anyway. Speak it out
aloud if you need to because it will be heard and you will
get a result. Be persistent and never give up. When you
get the response it is evidence of eternal life in a pain free
and loving World where the departed choose what comes
next in the form of opportunities open to them; and your
message won’t ever disturb, but it may gentle awaken
those who are resting and show them that, no matter what,
you will always love them.
44 | OUT AND ABOUT COSTA BLANCA WALSH’S WISDOM
Despite it being the peak of the high season
restaurants on the Costas find it difficult
to make enough business to cover their
overheads. Most are philosophical about the slump in
business and a ‘stuff happens’ mentality is pervasive.
I wonder if part of the problem is an unwillingness to
adapt to societal changes.
In Britain back in the 1960s and 1970s, restaurants
were few and far between and mostly Chinese run.
Otherwise, the best one could expect was a pint and a
stale bap from a pub’s bar top display.
Prosperity arrived, people wanted more and
restaurant pioneers delivered. Despite considerable
disadvantages compared to their Mediterranean
counterparts, Britain’s restaurants flourished.
Publicans resistant to change sold out to chains. Old
pubs were gutted and turned into wonderful family
restaurants often with indoor and outdoor play areas
for the children.
Properly trained friendly smartly attired in their
tunics waiting on staff served customers. The food
is fresh, well-cooked, healthy, tasty and priced
reasonably.
I recall the slogan: ‘We don’t serve fast food. We
serve good food fast.’
England and for that matter, Dublin and Riga
aren’t cheap so don’t have a price advantage over
their Mediterranean rivals. Due to poor weather
the outside terraces are few and far between. There
is little or no tourist season. Yet, despite all, these
eateries have no choice but to turn a good profit
every week throughout the year.
Before I retired to Spain and since when visiting
the United Kingdom I find the British bars, bistros,
pubs and conventional restaurants do a brisk trade.
Why? Because the owners are restaurant
entrepreneurs and a mainstay of their businesses
are their imaginative makeovers. In Bristol and
Liverpool, it is still necessary to book a restaurant
table so be prepared to wait or be turned away
Walsh’s Wisdom
You need more than a
good climate to run a
profitable restaurant
because they offer real variety.
There is a bigger and more varied choice of theme
restaurants in any moderately sized English city than
there is along Spain’s entire Mediterranean coast.
Furthermore, the service tends to be better as is the
quality of atmosphere and food.
On the Costas, if you have seen any two
restaurants you have seen them all. The choice of
eateries tends to resemble Blackpool type 1960s era
tin-table cafés or Spanish ambience restaurants; take
it or leave it.
Karaoke musical fare is as tediously unimaginative
as is the fare on the plate. Despite my living in quite
a well-heeled part of Costa Blanca and being also a
regular in and around Marbella, I can think of only
one atmospheric exotic restaurant, the expensive and
classy Trocadero that invites a smart dress code. Yet
in England, I was spoiled for choice.
I seem to recall that in Bristol and Liverpool,
two quite small cities compared to say London,
Manchester or Birmingham, there was a lip-smacking
choice of Mexican and Spanish, Russian, Indian
and Chinese of course, Italian, Irish, German, even
Jamaican and Trinidadian restaurants, oh, more than
you could swing a table napkin at.
Britain’s La Tasca chain of Spanish theme
restaurants were so popular it was difficult to get
a table even mid-week. My occasional Spanish
guests would exclaim, ‘why can’t we have Spanish
restaurants as good as these.’
Each themed pub truly dressed for the occasion
and provided appropriate fare. For instance, if dining
at a Mexican themed favourite it was easy to think
one was in a remote Mexican cantina. Why travel?
It seems to me that the sunshine in Spain needs
a little help. I suggest we start by applying a really
competitive restaurant and imaginative choice of
eateries primarily to benefit the customers rather
than the owner. Elsewhere, this approach results in a
win-win situation for owners and diners.
CHANGE YOUR LIFE
Have you a marriage
in difficulties??
We have the idea that marriage would
be a dream, that it would be sheer
bliss to have a lifelong partner to share
everything with and grow old with in harmony.......
that is what some of us have, no doubt. However,
more and more couples are finding the road to
married bliss more difficult to stay on than they
originally thought!!
You may find that applying the 3As Bearing in
mind that no one is very likely to marry someone
they don’t want to........what goes wrong? What
happens to change things?? If we marry someone
because we think they are the best thing since
sliced bread (!) where did it all change? More
importantly WHY did it all change?? Are YOU
still the same person? Is your partner still the same
person? How come you are feeling differently
about things nowadays........shouldn’t it all be
getting better, the longer you are together?
In a perfect world, maybe, but we don’t live in a
perfect world do we? However, there are usually
solutions we may not have thought of, so lets
consider some of those things....yes?
Ask yourself if there is anything worth working
at...? Anything worth saving? If so, there are some
things to explore.
Marriage is about meeting each others needs......
are we doing that??? If not, why not? It must
have been the pattern at one time if you ever felt
fulfilled in the relationship, so why did we stop
doing that?
Do we realise that when we choose to behave
in a particular way we are also choosing the
consequences?? Cause and effect, BIG TIME!!!!!

CHANGE YOUR LIFE
JULY 2021 | 49
Marriage is not about being on an ego
trip and it is not about a power struggle.
If marriage has turned into that, ask
yourself why? Marriage was all about
love, companionship and sharing......
have those words disappeared from
your relationship? Can you bring them
back? The answer is YES, but you have to
WANT to.
Do you know what your needs are? Do
you know what the needs of your partner
are?? When you have the answers to that
question, set goals and work towards
meeting those needs....every one of those
needs is a goal to meet.
Sometimes in life to get what you need
you have to give what you have. Read
that again!! So many of us “shut up
shop” and stop giving. What can be the
only possible result there?? Frustration,
resentment, withdrawal, closure........then
we go on, living from day to day trapped
in a relationship that is meaningless and
unfulfilling.
For those of you who have read my articles
before you must know what I am going
to say! .......YOU are in control! You can
make or break any situation in your life
by the way you handle it and by the way
you react towards it. If something is not
working the way you think it should,
ask yourself if you are being realistic? If
not, change the goalposts! Stop thinking
its your way or the highway!!....there are
TWO of you in this situation, not just one!!
Two points of view, two personalities to
take into consideration.
Achieving change and success in this may
be hard, but its not impossible! Its up to
you to evaluate the situation you are in
and do what you can to make a difference.
Till the next time! Take care!
DAWN BLYTHE
Does air quality on flights
pose a Health Risk?
How often do you ‘break out with
a cold’ a few days after flying?
In recent years aircraft
have been designed to recirculate
approximately 50% of the cabin air in
order to increase fuel efficiency.
Research now shows that contrary to
common belief the increase in people
getting colds following air travel is
not actually due to the quality of air
on board. It is more likely due to the
confined space of the aircraft.
Studies reveal that it doesn’t matter
if you are breathing recirculated air or
fresh air – if germs are present from other
passengers or crew you’re going to be
infected.
Droplets in the air (following a sneeze)
are a big cause. However direct contact
by touching other items that people
with colds have touched (trays, cups,
magazines etc.) counts even more. Touch
a cold virus germ then touch your face
and you’ve exposed yourself to a virus.
The risk of this is even greater where
there are lots of people in a confined
space such as an aircraft cabin.
In addition, increased stress levels
(often associated with travel) may lower
a person’s immunity enough to make
them more susceptible.
At the altitude at which commercial
jets fly, the air pressure does not allow
humans to breathe independently.To
overcome this, hot compressed air is

DAWN BLYTHE
JULY 2021 | 51
drawn from the plane’s engines and, once
cooled, directed into the cabin to supply
breathable air - known as bleed air.
Theoretically this does not pose a
health risk in itself. But some believe
that potential faults in the engine
seals can lead to heated engine
oil, hydraulic fluids and harmful
chemicals called organophosphates
(used to lubricate the engine’s metal
parts) contaminating the air. This is
known as a fume event.
How often do fume events take place?
Not so often! According to the
toxicology unit at Imperial College
London it is estimated that fume events
take place in 1 in 2,000 British flights.
They add that the information available
indicates even during potential fume
events, levels of air contamination are
low, and probably below those which
would be affecting health in humans
Does the risk of illness increase with
time spent flying?
Those at greatest risk are the crew who
fly for a living rather than the passengers
taking the occasional flight.
Also those on long-haul flights are also
more susceptible to illness, when taken
regularly.
What to look out for:
Signs that something is wrong may
include:
• Migraines
• Unexplained fatigue
• Poor concentration
• Difficulty thinking straight
• Breathing problems
• Digestive complaints
• General aches and pains
In Summary:
The CAA said in a statement: “There is
no positive evidence of a link between
exposure to contaminants in cabin air
and possible long-term health effects -
although such a link cannot be excluded.”
It is apparent that the possibility of
long-term health effects from repeated
exposure to fume events is an area that
needs more research.
Hi Folks
Been having a yap with Alfie, he loves me
to bits but he never leaves me alone. I had
a few whispers in his ear and said he has to
stop sleeping all the time pushed
up next to me, as it is a bit
warm. He cleans my face
and ears and of course
adores me, I enjoy
being pampered.
I put my paws in
the air now and he
cleans these. Yes
I am spoilt. Our
bossy little dog
Bentley is getting
a bit of a pain lately.
He really is in charge
and bosses us both all
the time. However, since his
birthday in April he has become
bossier. Bentley has to have his food first and
have all the toys or he gets annoyed with us,
so we just give in. He gets grumpy and Alfie
and I are placid. I had to bark to myself when
he came in and took out of Alfie’s mouth his
favourite toy and run downstairs with it and
hid it. Afie is so placid he lets him do it and it
never bothers me as I am so laid back.
Bentley can run like a hare as he is small
he nearly beats Alfie but I carry too much
muscle to join in all the time so I stand and
watch and bark occasionally. It’s all part of
puppy fun and I always give in to Alfie and
Bentley. My friends say that I am spoiling
them too much. However, Alfie is so likeable
and is such a kind loving dog and never
gets upset. Bentley is a good little dog but
his father is a Yorkie and he sometimes has
that bossy aggression with us but we take no
notice and let him be in charge.
too warm
for me
to go out
I am even
I am feeling better on
my new vitamins and do my
bit of weight. So I have to wear my cooling
my rheumatism. I have just heard that I am
getting a cooling jacket as my family are
worried how this heat is affecting my health
and they do not want me to be ill. So shortly
I will be looking very smart in my favourite
Alfie and Bentley are asleep now so I will
CELEBRITY PROFILE
BRIAN WILSON
Brian Douglas Wilson (born June 20, 1942) is
an American musician, singer, songwriter,
and record producer who founded the Beach
Boys. Often called a genius for his novel approaches
to pop composition, extraordinary musical aptitude,
and mastery of recording techniques, he is widely
acknowledged as one of the most innovative and
significant songwriters of the 20th century. Wilson
is also known for his lifelong struggles with mental
illness.
Raised in Hawthorne, California, Wilson’s early
influences included George Gershwin, the Four
Freshmen, Phil Spector, and Burt Bacharach. In
1961, he began his professional career as a member
of the Beach Boys, serving as the band’s songwriter,
producer, and co-lead vocalist, bassist, keyboardist,
and de facto leader. After signing with
Capitol Records in 1962, he became
the first pop artist credited for
writing, arranging, producing,
and performing his own
material. He also produced
other acts, most notably the
Honeys. By the mid-1960s, he
had written or co-written more
than two dozen U.S. Top 40
hits, including the number-ones
“Surf City” (1963), “I Get Around”
(1964), “Help Me, Rhonda” (1965),
and “Good Vibrations” (1966).
In 1964, Wilson suffered a nervous
breakdown and resigned from regular concert
touring, which led to more refined work, such
as the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds and Wilson’s first
credited solo release, “Caroline, No” (both 1966).
As his mental health deteriorated in the late 1960s,
his contributions to the band diminished, and he
became much-mythologized for his lifestyle of
seclusion, overeating, and drug abuse. In the 1980s,
he formed a controversial creative and business
partnership with his psychologist, Eugene Landy,
and relaunched his solo career with the album
Brian Wilson (1988). Following his disassociation
from Landy in 1991, Wilson started receiving
conventional medical treatment. Since the late
1990s, he has recorded and performed consistently
as a solo artist.
From an early age, Wilson demonstrated an
extraordinary skill for learning by ear. Speaking of
Wilson’s unusual musical abilities prior to his first
birthday, his father said that, as a baby, he could
repeat the melody from “When the Caissons Go
Rolling Along” after only a few verses had been
sung by the father.
Brian liked nothing more than to gather his
friends around the piano ... Most often he’d
harmonize with ... friends from his senior class.
Written for his Senior Problems course in October
1959, Wilson submitted an essay, “My Philosophy”,
in which he stated that his ambitions were to
“make a name for myself ... in music
Wilson, brothers Carl and Dennis,
cousin Mike Love, and their
friend Al Jardine first appeared
as a music group in of 1961,
initially under the name the
Pendletones. After being
prodded by Dennis to write
a song about the local watersports
craze, Wilson and
Mike Love together created
what became the first single for
the band, “Surfin”. Around this
time, the group rented an amplifier,
a microphone, and a stand-up bass for
Jardine to play. After the boys rehearsed for
several weeks in the Wilsons’ music room, his
parents returned home from a brief trip to Mexico.
Eventually impressed, Murry Wilson proclaimed
himself the group’s manager and the band
embarked on serious rehearsals for a proper studio
session.
When Candix Records ran into money problems
and sold the Beach Boys’ master recordings to
another label, Wilson’s father terminated the
contract. As “Surfin’” faded from the charts, Wilson,
who had forged a song writing partnership with
local musician Gary Usher, created several new

their first U.S. number one hit,
an unofficial rivalry between him
convinced Capitol Records to
Wilson ceased writing surfingthemed
continuing to write and produce
for this year included the albums Wilson’s senior yearbook group’s first major European tour,
Boys’ Christmas Album (November).
Following a particularly stressful Australasian tour
in early 1964, it was agreed by the group to dismiss
Wilson’s father Murry from his managerial duties.
Murry still had a subsequent influence over the
band’s activities and kept a direct correspondence
with Brian, giving him thoughts about the group’s
decisions; Wilson also periodically sought music
opinions from his father.
In February, Beatlemania swept the U.S., a
development that deeply disturbed Wilson. In
a 1966 interview, he commented, “The Beatles
invasion shook me up a lot. They eclipsed a lot
of what we’d worked for. ... The Beach Boys’
supremacy as the number one vocal group in
America was being challenged. So we stepped on
about originating the surfing sound:
“We don’t play surfing music. We’re tired of being
labelled as the originators of the surfing sound. We
just produce a sound that teens dig, and that can be
applied to any theme. The surfing theme has run its
course. Cars are finished now, too. And even Hondas
are over. We’re just gonna stay on the life of a social
teenager.” While promoting Christmas Album, Jack
Wagner remarked that Wilson’s decision to sing
solo on a version of “Blue Christmas” could be
“the start of a whole new career”, to which Wilson
responded “I don’t know. It could and it couldn’t. I
really don’t know.”
The Pet Sounds tour played in Europe, with a
sold-out four-night residency at the Royal Festival
Hall in London.
At age 11, Wilson was discovered to have
significantly diminished hearing in his right ear.
The cause is unclear; theories range from it being a
birth defect to him being struck by either his father
or a neighbourhood boy. In his memoir, the blame
is given to a neighbourhood boy, he underwent
corrective surgery that was unsuccessful in
restoring his hearing.
Wilson and Marilyn were married in December
1964. Together, they had two daughters, Carnie and
Wendy (born 1968 and 1969, respectively), who
later had musical success of their own as two-thirds
of the group Wilson Phillips .
WHERE ZEPHYRS FLOW
Close your eyes and open wide,
The windows of your mind;
Regret is for the wounded psyche,
Best let your past unwind;
Peer instead both far ahead,
Then to your left and right;
There’s more to see with open mind,
Much more than black and white.
Close your eyes and see instead,
The world as you would wish,
Picture scenes without what are,
The things you’ll never miss.
Imagination further sees,
Illusions like the ocean breeze,
Wanders where the zephyrs go,
I hope they blow to me.
OUT AND ABOUT POET
IS MAKING THE NEWS
Out and About Magazine poet, Michael Walsh, has had his
name and his art thrust into the limelight by a recent series of
successes.
Michael has been composing poetry for nearly fifty years. His
first book collections have now been published on Amazon
conventionally bound books. Each volume is colour illustrated
and contains about 70 wonderful poems.
He says, “What I find particularly encouraging is that my growing
army of enthusiasts were never before inclined towards reading
poetry. They thought it confusing and like a literary form of
modernist art; beyond their understanding. My verse leaves
readers with an itchy heart, not an itchy head.”
His international acclaim as a poet is boosted by tributes paid
to him by some of the world’s most respected figures in the arts,
theatre, entertainment, the Church, politics and literature. His
reputation has been further boosted by a You Tube 6-minute
62 | OUT AND ABOUT COSTA BLANCA HOROSCOPE
ARIES MARCH 21 - APRIL 20:
The mid month Chiron retrograde
in Aries brings with it an intensity
of power and energy. This will work
wonders in healing old wounds and boosting
much needed self-love too.
TAURUS APRIL 22 - MAY 21:
Mighty Uranus is ensconced in
Taurus as a busy month kicks
off. You have facts to face and the truth
may hurt someone, but certainly not you.
Remove all obstacles, because you can.
GEMINI MAY 22 - JUNE 22:
Walk away, and don’t think of lashing
out! Mercury is in Cancer opposing
Pluto in Capricorn and above all
don’t let anyone rain on your parade. You have
started, so you have to finish.
CANCER JUNE 23 - JULY 23:
With Mercury sliding into Cancer
on the 20th, Uranus and Taurus
allow the reveal of information that checks
out right now, and changes a situation that
seems to be veering out of control!
LEO JULY 24 - AUG 23:
The month starts with Mars in Leo
squaring on Uranus in Taurus.
Beware of elements of danger that
could impede your sincere need to establish
peace. A conflict borne of lies has had a
devastating effect.
VIRGO AUG 24 - SEPT 23:
Awarded the maximum 5 star rating in the most recent poll by
the American Federation of Certified Psychics and Mediums.
Venus enters on the 21st and any
hopes, wishes and desires are on
the cards. Love will always find a way, so
open your heart and know that faith is the
flame of the fire of passions within.
LIBRA SEPT 24 - OCT 23:
Asteroid Vesta is the true Cosmic
healer. Taking on Libra this month
brings with it a focus on partnerships in all
ways. Time to re-think and discuss a way
forward that’s amicable for you both!
SCORPIO OCT 24 - NOV 22:
The conjunction with Taurus,
your sibling Planet, and Uranus
allows you to think big when you
start future plans. You will have a second
and final chance to complete a project close
to your heart.
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 21:
Lucky Jupiter enters Pisces mid
month. This is a true time to be
free and go with the flow. Have fun and
know that you have worked very hard to
allow joy to finally enter your heart.
CAPRICORN DEC 22 - JAN 20:
Pluto in Capricorn opposes the
Sun in Cancer. As far as success
and abundance are concerned, don’t allow
your emotions to get the better of you.
Focus, and what you seek can be yours now!
AQUARIUS JAN 21 - FEB 19:
The Full Moon in Aquarius on the
23rd brings you to think rebellious
thoughts, just as the Jupiter retrograde a few
days later brings closure to something that
has been a thorn in your side.
PISCES FEB 20 - MAR 20:
Pallas, Asteroid of wisdom,
retrogrades in Pisces on the 14th
and your emotions are honed
to alleviate recent insecurities that beg to
influence you. Walk away with your head
held high and move on!
