AFTERMATH BY THE ROLLING STONES
Hello again and a warm welcome
to July´s All Time Greats. As well
as some general observations
about The Stones this month´s article is
specifically about their fine album from
1966 Aftermath. This was the collective
work in which the band came of age, every
track on it written by the new creative force
of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and
much of it enriched by the talent of Brian
Jones. He was soon to become the “enfant
terrible” of the band and lost his life at just
27 in 1969 in circumstances that are still
debated. At this stage , losing interest at
simply being a non singing guitarist, Brian
was able to turn his considerable talents
to playing a number of other instuments
on the album which greatly enhances its
quality. Far too little has been said about the
remaining members of The Stones so I will
add here that this album and many many
other works by the band are laid on top of
the rock solid foundations of their brilliant
rhythm section of Bill Wyman on bass &
Charlie Watts on drums.
By 1966 the two leading bands of the beat
era had hugely conflicting images that had
the media telling people you could support
one band or the other but not both. The
Beatles were the good guys whose music
was steadily mellowing and The Stones
were the bad guys who would never leave
their origins in blues and swamp rock.
Aftermath WAS the first LP by The Stones
which was entirely of their own creation
and was a development from their previous
