Hello, dad. I was getting worried. This
the third time I’ve phoned. Were you
outside?
- Spent a long time in the garden, watching
the butterflies on the Wisteria. Think
I must haver dozed off because I was
suddenly quite chilly, so I’ve come back
inside.
- Did you see anyone while you were out
there?
- Yes. My cleaning lady came.
- I hope you observed ‘social distancing’?
- Of course. She only comes up to the gate.
Shouts ‘Hello’ and asks if I’m OK.
- So she doesn’t come in?
No. I put her money in an envelope and
sellotape it to the gate. She waves to me and
shouts “Thank you”. See you next week.”
She’s a nice lady.
- I bet she is. Have you had supper yet?
- No. I don’t know what to have.
- What about the smoked ham I gave you?
What don’t you make a sandwich?
- Smoked ham? No, you didn’t give me
smoked ham. I think I’ve got some cheese.
But there’s no bread left.
- Dad! I put a packet of soft bread rolls in the
bag when I gave you the ham. Remember
the blue bag, in the Car Park at Lidl on
Tuesday? You put it on the passenger seat
in your car.
- Did !? Are you sure? I remember the blue
bag and you watching me pick it up. It
must still be in the car.
- Dad! It’s Friday. You’ve had it 3 days. It
won’t be fit to eat being in the car all that
time - in this heat.
- I’ll go and get it. I like smoked ham.
- I know. That’s why I bought it. Don’t eat it
if its gone off.
- I’ll put some mustard on.
- Every week I give you lovely fresh food -
and I always say - “Put it in the fridge as
soon as you get home”.
I suppose you stopped for a drink on the
way and then forgot you had food in the
car.
- Spencers is the only bar that’s open. But
the barmaid was telling me there’s more
opening next week. She said....
- Dad, you’re going to have to take more
care of the food I give you - now that
you’ve learned to use the fridge.
