ART OF CALLIGRAPHY<br />

Arabic calligraphy<br />

is still today one<br />

of <strong>the</strong> most widely<br />

acknowledged arts<br />

and cont<strong>in</strong>ues to<br />

develop both <strong>in</strong><br />

traditional methods<br />

as well as <strong>in</strong> digital<br />

and computergenerated<br />

arts.<br />

The traditional <strong>in</strong>strument<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Islamic calligrapher is<br />

<strong>the</strong> kalam, a pen normally made<br />

of dried reed or bamboo. The <strong>in</strong>k is<br />

often <strong>in</strong> colour and chosen so that<br />

its <strong>in</strong>tensity can vary greatly, creat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

dynamism and movement <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> letter<br />

forms. Some styles are often written<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g a metallic-tip pen.<br />

While Arabic calligraphy is heavily<br />

grounded <strong>in</strong> tradition, it serves as<br />

<strong>in</strong>spiration for modern art. In fact,<br />

many contemporary artists have<br />

developed <strong>the</strong>ir own style and<br />

techniques for Arabic calligraphy.<br />

Modern artists may put <strong>the</strong>ir own<br />

sp<strong>in</strong> on traditional letterforms and<br />

mediums, <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>g calligraphy<br />

<strong>in</strong>to jewelry and digital designs, or<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g pa<strong>in</strong>t on canvas, ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>in</strong>k<br />

on paper.<br />

Arabic calligraphy is still today one<br />
