Population Day<br />

World Population Day is observed on <strong>July</strong> 11 every year.<br />

The day which is be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

celebrated for over three<br />

decades, is meant to<br />

raise awareness about<br />

solutions related to <strong>the</strong><br />

issues of a grow<strong>in</strong>g population. It<br />

is aimed to shift <strong>the</strong> focus towards<br />

<strong>the</strong> urgency and <strong>the</strong> significance of<br />

issues related to population.<br />

The World Population Day was<br />

established by <strong>the</strong> Govern<strong>in</strong>g Council<br />

of <strong>the</strong> United Nations Development<br />

Programme <strong>in</strong> 1989. By resolution<br />

45/216 of December<br />

1990, <strong>the</strong> UN<br />

General Assembly decided to<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ue observ<strong>in</strong>g World Population<br />

Day to enhance awareness of<br />

population issues, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

relations to <strong>the</strong> environment and<br />

development.<br />

It was first marked on 11 <strong>July</strong> 1990 <strong>in</strong><br />

more than 90 countries. S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>n, a<br />

number of United Nations Population<br />

Fund (UNFPA) country offices and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r organizations and <strong>in</strong>stitutions<br />

commemorate World Population Day,<br />

<strong>in</strong> partnership with governments and<br />

civil society.<br />

The day is<br />

significant because it highlights <strong>the</strong><br />

problems of overpopulation, raises<br />

awareness about <strong>the</strong> effects of<br />

overpopulation on <strong>the</strong> environment<br />

and development. It also talks about<br />

<strong>the</strong> health problems faced by child<br />

bear<strong>in</strong>g women and <strong>the</strong> importance<br />

of family plann<strong>in</strong>g, gender equality,<br />

poverty, maternal health and human<br />

rights.<br />

The day was <strong>in</strong>spired by <strong>the</strong> public<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> Five Billion Day on <strong>July</strong> 11,<br />

1987, <strong>the</strong> approximate date on which<br />

<strong>the</strong> world’s population reached five<br />

billion people. The world has come<br />

a long way s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>n. As of June<br />

<strong>2021</strong>, accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> worldmeters<br />

website, <strong>the</strong> world population has<br />

hit an all-time high at 7.9 billion<br />

people.<br />
